Cutting grass at 8:30 on Sunday morning?

As a one off, because we have a bouncy castle coming, we are cutting the grass at 8:30 on a Sunday morning. Next door have just shouted out of their window. 🙈
AIBU? It’s not something we have ever done before or plan to repeat. I kind of think one off things you suck it up a bit? Same as the odd occasion their dog is barking outside my bedroom window at 11pm.

OP posts:
Chillychangchoo · 09/05/2021 20:54

Bit inconsiderate but on the whole okay as it was a one off. They sound horrible anyway shouting out the window so I’d be inclined to do it again.

eatsleepread · 09/05/2021 20:55

I wouldn't do this, nor would I expect it from my neighbours.

TwoIsQuiteEnoughThankYou · 09/05/2021 21:01

My goodness there's a lot of tedious whiners on here today.
I quite like the sound of lawnmowers. It's summery. And you can't beat the smell of freshly mown grass.

@Lincslady53

Why should Sunday be different to any other day? A lot of people work on Sundays, if you work in retail, you will possibly start work at 10.00ish. So 8.30 is a good time for you to mow the lawn. The neighbour is out of order for complaining.
The majority of people don’t work on Sunday morning though? Yes some people do work- but only about a fifth of the workforce work over the weekend - so the proportion working on Sunday morning will be even lower - say 10% or less?

Neighbour shouldn’t have yelled - but I was always brought up to be considerate and letting people have a quiet Sunday morning doesn’t seem that much of an inconvenience?

Mehoooole · 09/05/2021 21:06

I think it is fine. There are some people who work shifts who can cut their lawn at 8.30 in the morning or they can't cut it. People may be sleeping but those same people probably always cut their lawn when the shift worker is sleeping. We've all got to cut others some slack.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 09/05/2021 21:09

I think it’s too early, sorry.

It could have been done the day before.

I would say 10 is the earliest for outdoor noise that isn’t absolutely necessary - over and above normal voices, cars passing etc - on a Sunday. So music, diy, lawnmowers should all wait.

Countrygirl2021 · 09/05/2021 21:10

Another stupid comment. Who the F are you to say what time 'grown adults' are allowed to lie in til on a Sunday morning? hmm Some people actually have jobs, and work for a living, and DESERVE a Sunday morning lie-in, without inconsiderate arseholes making a racket at 8.30am! Maybe when you actually get a job, maybe you won't be so rude and inconsiderate and selfish hmmmm? hmm

I just wanted to reassure you that I work full time. I'm up at 6am on a weekday to run, get animals sorted, dogs walked and small people to nursery before heading off to work.

At the weekend I often don't get up until 7. An hour later than normal therefore a lie in.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 09/05/2021 21:10

(Personally it wouldn’t affect me as I would sleep through it, but I know others sleep more lightly)

Livpool · 09/05/2021 21:19

Far too early on a Sunday. No loud noises before 9 - possibly even 10. Most people get up early during the week and appreciate a lie in or quiet time at the weekend

cyclingmad · 09/05/2021 21:40

Its all a moot point. Councils up and down the country have a noisy hours policy in place. End of.

It doesn't matter if you think its okay to make noise earlier. These noisy hours have been put in place for a reason.

If you choose to ignore them then quite frankly your selfish because you think your above these rules that are put in place to ensure everyone in society can live together in a considerate way.

Volcanoexplorer · 09/05/2021 21:46

It wouldn’t bother me. We were all up and dressed by then. Left for cricket at 8:50am. Not everyone lies in until 10am. Regularly see my neighbours out and about before 9am even on weekends. If you don’t make a habit of it I wouldn’t worry.

absolutely!
80sPadme · 09/05/2021 22:06

I think the neighbour is incredibly rude!
It's 0830am! Where's the rule that said 10am is the earliest you can make a noise on a Sunday!? It was a one off, they need to get a grip, my neighbour is out jet washing his cars at 8am most sundays and no one complains. I think now 7 days a week are working days and most of the shops open at 10 there is no longer any particular day for a longer snooze.

Isittimeformynapyet · 09/05/2021 22:17

My neighbours get up freaky early - like 5:30/6am every day. She had a habit of furiously sweeping out the front by their porch, banging her broom against the wall just below my bedroom. I was cheffing back then and got home late at night. I had one precious lie-in and she started her angry housework at 6:45am! I leant out the window and said "Shirley, can't you do that later?" She said "no" very bluntly. I said "but it's my day off" and she said....... "bully for you". I said nothing else.

Hideous behaviour for sure, but she's never done it since. I'm not a pushover, I just decided to keep her firmly in the wrong.

Seize the moral high ground and don't let go!

mumwon · 09/05/2021 22:17

you could run a cement mixer next to our bedroom window & dh would sleep through it
I would be on my second cup of tea & normal lawn mowers are as pp said, the sound of summer. As long as its not one of those big noisy sit & ride types (which dh would still sleep through)
Dh came home from work one summer evening & used the mower at 6pm -our neighbour had a go because his dc was in bed- & we knew this how?

Notjustanymum · 09/05/2021 23:09

TBH, I would welcome the sound of a lawnmower at 8:30 on a Sunday morning instead of the usual stentorian sounds of the football-coaching neighbour marshalling his kids to get ready to leave for their training session! Hopefully they (or he) will grow out of it in a few years time, but my God, he’s loud! OP if it’s a one-off I’d just say so and leave it at that!

But what are those hours?
spotcheck · 09/05/2021 23:22

@sirfredfredgeorge

non-work day

Fuck off with your 9-5 monday to Friday privilege, every day is a work day for people, 8:30 is fine, better to avoid if you can, just like it's better to avoid cutting your grass at any time at all given how noisy it is, but there's nothing special about 8:30.

Jesus- what the hell ISN'T a privilege these days?

MOST people do revolve around school, etc.
8.30 is rude

Mine played footy every Saturday and Sunday until they were 18. Sorry. Sad Grin
StoneofDestiny · 09/05/2021 23:28

It would bother me much more if neighbours shouted out their windows at other neighbours 😱 than if somebody cut their grass at 8.30.

Cushionsnotpillows · 10/05/2021 00:23

Surely grown adults don't sleep in past 8:30.

And again, ridiculous assumptions. You don't know every adult and their lifestyles! On an average working day I get up around 8am and that's just to get my DC out the door to school, so no 8.30 isn't a luxury or anything.

A proper lie in for me is 11ish. I often don't go to sleep before 1am, that's my body clock. 8.30 is early for anything in my book, especially on a Sunday.

Sparklingbrook · 10/05/2021 00:28

When I worked nights (as a grown adult) I went to bed about 7am.

A lie in for me now on a Sunday would be 9am as I get up about 6.30am in the week. As a teenager I’d sleep til 2pm on a Sunday due to being out all night. Grin But I doubt a lawnmower would have roused me.

AlwaysLatte · 10/05/2021 00:38

Lots of people on this thread have come buzzing out like angry wasps saying 8.30 on a weekend morning isn't too early to get the lawn mower out. Very helpful to know who they are so that we don't have to be worried if we need to use the drill at a similar time.

Me too, have never been up early except for going to work, taking to school or something essential. Thankfully my kids were the same, no 6am wake ups from quite early ages.
MrsTroutfire · 10/05/2021 05:01

As somebody who gets to bed at around 3am (due to work) this would piss me right off!
