AIBU to think Eminem is the greatest rapper of all time?

Just going through those early great albums, The Slim Shady, The Marshall Mathers LP, the Eminem show...and thinking what a genius. I’ve also had some glasses of wine so am rambling. But those brilliant lyrics. Sigh....anyone agree?

I agree in terms of sheer lyrical ability, UK rappers are a cut above.

What's interesting though is that the popularity of the Lil Pumps, the Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yachty etc, is the culmination of a punk and rock aesthetic that has allowed hip hop to have another extended lease of life in the US.

There was a time around 2008/2009 when hip hop felt a little tired and old, a bit like when the excesses of 70s rock was about to be destroyed by the punk revolution.

The whole Kanye vs 50 Cent album launch, the fact that the most successful albums were tired rehashes of past glories by veteran MCs like Jay-Z and Raekwon..it was still a billion dollar business but it felt old.

Kanye then makes his surprise Autotune album 808s and Heartbreak after the death of his mother, and tha Carter III by Lil Wayne becomes the biggest record on the planet

For me these two moments are why we have the hip hop we have today. 808s and Heartbreak was the "Never Mind the Bollocks" of it's time - it smashed a wall through staid and crafted hip hop and said "it's ok to be angry and emotional."Drake wouldn't have a career without it.

As for Lil Wayne, just look at the first part of all those new rappers names. His slurry stream of consciousness style has influenced everyone in the game.

Basically if TLDR, US rap isn't Wu Tang and Nas anymore, and thank god it isn't. Music evolves.

Agreed. It's slightly odd for me, however, to see these rainbow haired youths who would've been seen as a bit fancy a decade ago but who still seem to be posturing with guns and hanging out with Bloods/Crips etc. But as you say times change.

I'm not too keen on the whole drill thing tbh though. Violence has always been part of that life, but it seems to me that with drill a lot of them actually seek out beef with the opps as a means of qualification rather than it being a byproduct. Not that beefs and turf wars never happened before, but with drill you pretty much have to be talking about the opps to be considered real, whereas with gangster rap you could just be rapping about the streets and dealing etc.

But maybe I'm a bit biased as had to deal with the police the other week due to one of our drivers being at a car park minutes before a double shooting occurred. They turned up and wanted the footage from all the truck cams etc in order to look for the suspects' cars, which was really not what I needed on that particular day.

There defo seem to increasing numbers of increasingly younger kids involved. A young rapper used to be say 18, but that's a pretty standard age for a drill artist with many being like 15-16 and already stabbing people up. I'd say 25 would be pretty old. I see loads of these types of kids about when I go out with the night drivers to places like Handsworth, Smethwick, Aston, Lozells, etc. I'd hate to be working alone at night making deliveries to shops in those areas.

Going back to Eminem, he's definitely very good and has his unique sound. However, without deifying the forefathers, I do think that some credence had to be given to those that lid the foundation.

I feel similarly about John Frusciante. Amazing player and songwriter and almost unbelievable that he wrote the guitar on Blood Sugar Sex Magick (Under the Bridge etc) at only 18yo, but his style absolutely exudes Hendrix in a way that Eminem isn't that far removed from shouty white rappers like the Beastie Boys etc, but just a bit angrier and more eloquent.

Bastard police eh trying to catch criminals and interfering with your day. Taking double shootings seriously, whatever next.

People keep mentioning goats? Why? Confused🐐

TaraR2020 · 10/05/2021 09:52

GOAT = Greatest of all time Grin

Rubyrecka · 10/05/2021 09:55

‘He’s a white rapper so people think he’s a genius. Truth is he isn’t a patch on black rappers. Even Nicki Minaj runs rings around him in terms of lyrical content’

I wondered when a comment like this was going to come up, can’t even have a normal convo now with out race being thrown in Confused 🙄

Bluesheep8 · 10/05/2021 10:34

@TaraR2020

GOAT = Greatest of all time

Well you learn something new every day, thank you Grin
I was starting to think.it was a reference to actual goats and trying to work.out why rappers would be compared to goats! Grin

Mysterian · 10/05/2021 10:45

Dr Dre just for the line "Moving like a tortoise, full of rigor mortis".

@cruzrack

Nahhh Biggie or Tupac
Yes. For me it was always Biggie.
WeeGobshiteBentBastard · 10/05/2021 11:01

That's a cringeworthy lyric, like something a year 4 child might write. Still, given that Dr. Dre ' lyrics' are peppered with references to women as Ho and B**ch ( as well as a multitude of the n word) I suppose it could be seen as an improvement.

No bad language/semi clad women, just clever replies to their haters, can't beat the Cyphers of RM, j-hope and SUGA. Also the solo work of RM and SUGA as August-D.
Try Korean rap!
I don't really like most of Dave's music but his warm up session as a 15yo unknown was pretty impressive. He seems to have the knack for storytelling and you can tell he's actually speaking from the heart.
Wow, thanks for sharing. I mentioned Dave's BL@CKBOX S6 Ep. 24/65 earlier on, but have never heard this.

Oh I love him. Naughty, sexy, clever. He keeps me going on my runs!

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/05/2021 15:19

Eminem was at a disadvantage because he was white.

Nope. Maybe in the early days it was difficult to be taken seriously. But actually, the music business has sought white artists to make black music acceptable to a mass market. Since Elvis. Huge advantage.

Chanjer · 10/05/2021 15:21

Eminem was at a disadvantage because he was white

lol

Mysterian · 10/05/2021 16:43

Didn't stop Vanilla Ice though, did it!

canary1 · 10/05/2021 20:59

Wow, I sure feel like I need to listen to some earlier rappers. I guess Eminem was very much the era of my youth, so there’s a nostalgia about that music for me. And I guess as he says himself ‘he’s so cute though’ 😬😂

Loved that, NamedchangedforthisFeb21!

Loved hearing everyone’s views and learning more about other rap, thanks to everyone who contributed to this. I’ll branch out a bit... but Eminem will remain for me, and some, the GOAT!

OP posts:
Blackberrycream · 10/05/2021 21:21

This whole thread is not mumsnets finest!
Eminem is respected but not ‘ the greatest’ in terms of innovation or delivery.
In terms of delivery and lyrically it would probably be Nas, Illmatic.
Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock, Madvillain are other giants.
British rappers would have to include Rodney P, Akala, Roots

Griefmonster · 10/05/2021 21:22

I am utterly despairing that at least 2 PPs only mentioned Missy as an "underrated" rapper. Underrated by WHOM?! Any sensible person knows she is an absolute legend. Creativity, lyricism and delivery off the scale. And going STRONG as ever. There are many many male rappers that I enjoy listening to but only Missy makes me want to weep with intense joy and astonishment.
