AIBU to think Eminem is the greatest rapper of all time?

Just going through those early great albums, The Slim Shady, The Marshall Mathers LP, the Eminem show...and thinking what a genius. I’ve also had some glasses of wine so am rambling. But those brilliant lyrics. Sigh....anyone agree?

People like you just cherry pick the worst bit you can find . If it's not for you stay out the conversation

It's not 'cherry picking', it's his own words. And the thread is AIBU to think he is the great rapper, and I have as much right to comment on it as anyone else. This is not a fan thread.

Rap probably isnt your thing.to black urban for maybe

I like rap. Just because I think rap can be done without those two examples, doesn't mean I don't like rap. You seem absolutist.

He called Mariah Carey a “slut bitch cunt” and said he had to “put up with her psycho ass for six months for her to only spread her legs once “
gross

Yes, and apparently "slut bitch cunt" is an example of his literary genius. The guy can barely string a sentence together in his, 'songs', he has the literary skill of a half dead cat. If I didn't know better I would assume school holidays are on and the teens are posting on here. I can think of so many better rappers than him.

Considering his lyrical abilities are held in such high regard by people who know what there actually talking about (other high quality lyrical rappers) I would say your wrong

This topic is so frustrating because no one including @canary1 the OP has defined what makes “greatest rapper” in terms of criteria.

This thread has instead become “here’s my favourite rapper” with a brief argument, or no argument.

Here’s four categories which explains why the same names keep coming up

=======

• People think greatest rapper means “most socially conscious”. These* *folk don’t include record sales, fame, or longevity in their judgement. They believe all rappers should be held to a higher standard than pop artists. Anyone who speaks about harsh realities without giving social commentary is immediately discounted. People in this category have stated Nas, Akala, Lowkey, Mos Def, Talib Kweli (seriously?!) etc.

•. People think greatest rapper means their favourite rapper who is internationally famous and has had a memorable discography this category doesn’t take into account technique or subject matter. It’s all about “the biggest name” based on sales, nostalgia, recognition. So 2Pac, Biggie, LL Ccol J (yeah he was the biggest, perhaps the first solo star, once!) etc.

People believe greatest rapper means the best mic technique and rhyming ability This is where Eminem reigns supreme and why he’s in here. See also Jay-Z, and any other technically gifted MC.

People can’t understand why groups aren’t included and so name their favourite group We have already seen Wu Tang, A Tribe Called Quest etc named in the thread, and all had great MCs and some solo stars. But are their solo stars “the greatest?” Rae and Ghost I’d argue should be up there for sheer influence. But the greatest?

=======

for me the greatest rapper to do it was Lil Wayne.

Technically runs rings around most rappers here

The rap scene of the last 15 years has been built around his entire cadence, image and persona. I could write a list of a dozen hitmakers today whose rap name starts with “Lil”. They are all musical sons of Wayne.

Legendary discography - Tha Carter III is the equivalent of Never Mind the Buzzcocks in terms of how it shaped and changed rap.

Probably one of the best replies on this topic.

I'm not even sure 100% eminem is in my top 5.

Theres are others I list en too more

Tech n9ne,rittz,king crooked, royce da 5'9 and others.
All super lyrical, and the technique is hard to beat

winteryblues · 11/11/2022 13:54

I love Eminem's work. Shame he was a twat with women. And I always wondered how his other children felt about Hailie being the one be sang about!
I've never been into rap much but got more into it recently
For some reason I love LOVE 'Kream' (sic?) By Iggy Azelaia and '212' by Azaliah Banks (again probably spelt a lot of names etc wrong).

the80sweregreat · 11/11/2022 13:58

Little Simzs ( not sure how you spell her stage name ) is very good and I am not into rap at all
I watched her Glastonbury set and she is very talented.

xogossipgirlxo · 11/11/2022 13:59

Oh, totally agree.

DripDripDripSugar · 11/11/2022 14:02

You’re being unreasonable.

The best rapper of all time is Bubbler Ranx, who collaborated with Peter Andre on “Mysterious Girl”.

BroomHandledMouser · 11/11/2022 14:05

@DripDripDripSugar 🤣🤣 brilliant

Babochan88 · 11/11/2022 15:20

Exactly, if we go by skill then yes, he’s a great rapper. However due to his race, people say he’s the best. He’s not

In your opinion (and mine) But he is better than 98% of black rappers .

Slightly off topic but my mind was blown when I learned Eminem and Mariah Carey had history and there have been many musical 'disses' on both sides. I just CANNOT imagine them as a couple. Check out the video of Mariah's song Obsession if you don't already know it. There's a character in it who's the spit of Eminem and the lyrics are 😂😱. Made him v v angry apparently and he's still going on about it. One diss of his to look up is Bagpipes of Baghdad. He is a genius, I agree.

How did I not know this!?

Twiglets1 · 14/11/2022 04:59

I agree - some of his earlier stuff in particular. The lyrics are poetry.

I think I love you (and agree!)

Granddadwentdownthepit · 14/11/2022 09:41

He's good but GOAT?

Like too many other rappers he did a couple of great albums then got complacent as he got rich.

It's all personal taste though isn't it. I can't be doing with the current mumbling nonsense and hated most of the gangster rap stuff. Much preferred Del, Aesop Rock, De La Soul and so on.

Best live rapper? Ice T. Absolute stone cold mayhem. One of the most insane mosh pits I've ever been in. Carnage.

People who think Eminem is a good rapper don’t understand rap. He was a novelty act.
