To be irritated by people wanting a foreign holiday this summer?

Irishterrier · 06/05/2021 18:18

I know some people have family abroad and that is different.

However I know several people who either have second homes abroad or just fancy some sun, and I feel annoyed by them agitating about wanting to go abroad this summer.

AIBU to think they're being selfish?

Tui have announced a testing package for lft and pcr for £20 pp which should help hugely and free countries done have any isolation

It’s in discussion that by late summer testing on return may be gone even for green countries

Pastanred · 06/05/2021 21:11

Free = green

pinkscrunchy · 06/05/2021 21:12

@Goblin74 should have read that you DO begrudge holidays but not visiting family. I very much disagree that there is a difference.

BloodyTinaNextdoorAgain · 06/05/2021 21:12

Helping out economy is a bloody ridiculous argument for not travelling. Why are some people so determined to never see the bigger picture.
It also helps our economy in this country when you go abroad. It helps the people who work for holiday firms, travel agents and tour operators, airport staff, retail staff, airline staff. People buy things they never would if they weren't going abroad, they book taxis and trains, airport hotels.... So many things.
Travel sector workers here all pay our taxes and spend our wages in this country. We won't if no one travels and our companies go bust.
It may surprise you to hear we also spend a week in a UK hotel and go on lots of UK weekends away. (But it costs me more to have a week in Devon than it does to go to Cuba.) We do this on top of our trips outside of the UK. But again we won't be doing this if our industry collapses.

CrystalE · 06/05/2021 21:13

Maybe the lack of UK accomodation is either a) because supply have not caught up with demand or b) because cheaper to pay low wages to workers in other countries.

MaxNormal · 06/05/2021 21:13

maybe consider how you could help the UK economy by holidaying at home instead of paying cheap rates to exploit foreign workers

Holidaying in the Med and supporting the tourist industry there is hardly exploiting foreign workers, don't be daft. It's saving people's livelihoods.

@Volcanoexplorer

I worry that we’ll end up of a repeat of last year and cases will rise and then we’ll be in lockdown again. Especially if foreign travel means that other strains get passed around more. I don’t think foreign holidays are worth the risk personally.
Not being allowed to have a holiday very much feels like a lockdown, so either way... I'd rather enjoy my free time whilst I can.
PositiviTea21 · 06/05/2021 21:23

I hope everyone who’s thinks it’s selfish never has the audacity to go to any foreign country next year or whenever you deem is acceptable and complain when there are less bars and places to eat to go to, when the service is slow because they can no longer afford the wages of waiters and waitresses, when there are no excursions because the companies that owned boats and buses went bust, that your hotel is run down because there was no money to renovate, that the price of a holiday, a meal or a taxi has rocketed. There are many people who rely heavily on tourism, and if you don’t want to support these people now don’t bother in a few years either. You know what they say if people can’t help you at your lowest.... absolutely selfish for people to protest against people making a living and having jobs. If you don’t want to come don’t but don’t post about how others shouldn’t and please DO NOT book a holiday abroad in future and expect the people you forgot to wait on you hand and foot.

RedcurrantPuff · 06/05/2021 21:26

@picturesandpickles

I don't think they are selfish, although I think international travel this year is misguided on a national level.

One of the most ridiculous posts I've read on here, and that's saying something.
BusyLizzie61 · 06/05/2021 21:28
**@BusyLizzie61* @Cocolemon* I don’t see how a variant could be brought back though unless I’m missing something?

If people are doing PCR tests before they leave and on the way back / self isolating how is this any more risky than someone going to wales mixing outside their normal community and not doing any tests? Or am missing something in the guidance or have you seen something that contradicts this?
Have you seen the news of the school with 100 cases today?

All doing tests supposedly... Yet 100.cases.

m0therofdragons · 06/05/2021 21:29

Meh, I’m double vaccinated and Florida’s vaccination programme has been good so if we can go then we will (carried over from last summer). We’ve always travelled and staying home feels claustrophobic to us. I worked crazy hours this year in our hospital so if the Government says I can go then I’ll go.

CharlieBoo · 06/05/2021 21:29

I don’t think it’s selfish to want a summer holiday abroad.. I think everyone’s had enough of restrictions. I’d love to go away, but
I probably won’t be able to afford it this year but if I could I’d be going

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 06/05/2021 21:31

I love going abroad, and we usually have a foreign holiday every year.

At the moment, though, I think the risk of bringing in a variant which can get past the vaccine isn't one I'd want to take.

It won't be a repeat of last year because by the end of the summer, a huge percentage of the country will have been vaccinated. Yes, you can still catch it once vaccinated but it's not as severe and hospital admissions are decreasing.

There's a seasonal element to the virus but we'll be in a much, much better position later this year compared to last autumn/winter.

Daphnise · 06/05/2021 21:32

It's the bringing back to the UK of variations of COVID from poorly vaccinated countries like most of the EU that is a concern- not just having differing tastes and views on people's holidays, so yes I'd say it is crassly selfish at the moment to go to countries with poor vaccination levels such as most of Europe.

Lovemusic33 · 06/05/2021 21:33

I hope people are able to travel this summer because I holiday in the uk and it will be packed if people are not able to go abroad, prices of uk holidays have shot up, even camp sites are charging double.

I haven’t been abroad for years, we holiday here but would maybe consider going abroad next year.

I don’t think it’s selfish for people to want a holiday, as long as people are sensible and follow the rules for the country they are travelling too I can’t see a issue.

Figgyboa · 06/05/2021 21:33

I'm taking a weeks vacation abroad. My OH and I are both fully vaccinated, we are traveling to a green light country who's restrictions are on the same level as where we live (not UK). We are planning on following all the rules - mandatory masks, social distancing and taking the necessary tests to re-enter our home country. You can say we're selfish, I don't care.

Minniem2020 · 06/05/2021 21:34

As I rely on people going on holiday in order for me to keep my job and pay my bills, I really hope more people want to do it.

BusyLizzie61 · 06/05/2021 21:36

@CrystalE

I haven't heard a serious scientist say summer hols abroad - great idea! I have heard many serious scientists say summer hols abroad - bad idea.

people need to think about who has got us to the relatively good place we now find ourselves - scientists or politicians/ tour operators.

This with bells on!

Read this and then tell me people are not selfish

@Roboticcarrot I was about to say this was a very lucid post. Fully agree.
