To be irritated by people wanting a foreign holiday this summer?

I know some people have family abroad and that is different.

However I know several people who either have second homes abroad or just fancy some sun, and I feel annoyed by them agitating about wanting to go abroad this summer.

AIBU to think they're being selfish?

OP posts:

Not unreasonable at all (and I say that as someone who has an overseas holiday booked).

MiniCooperLover · 06/05/2021 21:48

I've reported this, feels like a cheap journalistic question and no sign of the OP

MirandaBlu · 06/05/2021 21:52

Maybe people who have "second homes abroad" need and/or want to visit those properties when they can and make sure that all is well? They may be renting those spaces out to local people or tourists and have a responsibility to make sure that they are in good condition.

... and I feel annoyed by them agitating about wanting to go abroad this summer. Agitating how? The ridiculous stuff the UK government has pulled to prevent people from leaving the country is, well, ridiculous. And authoritarian. But how does it impact you if people want to leave the country and argue that it should be allowed?

People may be vaccinated, but what if your vaccine does not cover the variant you catch while getting your 'much deserved' sun?

Back to the UK, for the NHS to patch you up?

the NHS would have to treat the effects of mental health (and physical health) affected by NOT going on holiday anyway so yes.
TownTalkJewels · 06/05/2021 21:56

Not this again!

Why do you think going to France is more ‘dangerous’ than going to Kent?

Why do you think it’s more ‘selfish’ to get on a plane than to go to the pub?

People value different things. Get over it

Foreigners not to be trusted - I assume. From the people who brought you Brexit.

Guess the Government won't have considered any of those things before allowing travel Hmm

People are skiing in real snow in the Lake District OP. ITS MAY!!!!

Don’t take away our summer holidays!

motherloaded · 06/05/2021 22:03

If I book a staycation for the summer, you are guaranteed the worst floods the UK had experienced in decades.

Trust me, you WANT me to go abroad on holiday.

SunnyLovesCassie · 06/05/2021 22:06

Travelling about anywhere in a pandemic is foolish really. Sometimes it's absolutely necessary and a lot of the time it just isn't. People travelling over Xmas is what caused the 3rd wave (mostly U.K. variant) in Europe. It makes me a bit cross that now things are under control in U.K. the first thought is to start moving about the place again.

Sinthie · 06/05/2021 22:07

I have hated every second of lockdown. I am keen for everything to re-open in our country. I feel this should be the priority at the moment. I want to be able to live normally in my own country and would rather not face the risk of importing “new variants” this summer. Overseas holidays can wait- I just want to be able to go to houses of friends and family, bars, clubs, restaurants, gym, concerts, festivals freely.

bungabungaboo · 06/05/2021 22:14

I would not trust the government! They handled xmas well didn't they? Hmm

bungabungaboo · 06/05/2021 22:16

Not going on holiday causes MH problems, really?

I did not go on holiday as child at all, I did not have MH issues

Interesting justification Hmm

Thisismyname77463 · 06/05/2021 22:18

I have a home abroad, why is it selfish? Going to do exactly what I do here, work and watch my child. In a different house, where it is sunny every day.

Babygotblueyes · 06/05/2021 22:19

yes, foreign holidays are not a basic human right nor essential and it is the poor handling of international travel that caused a lot of problems.

bungabungaboo · 06/05/2021 22:19

The variant that is currently sweeping across India has been found in the UK, how did it get here? Travel
Fortunately the vaccine works on this variant but........
There will be another one

TownTalkJewels · 06/05/2021 22:20

Anyone care to share when they think travel should be allowed?

Is the risk of foreign variants going to disappear by next summer?

Or the summer after?

No.

ALevelhelp · 06/05/2021 22:21

Nope I'm not irritated by them at all. Holidays abroad aren't on our list every year, so don't feel the need myself, but don't think badly of anyone wanting to travel. It's been a pretty shit year for most of us in one way or another and everyone needs something to look forward to.

Meadowland · 06/05/2021 22:21

YANBU

lazylinguist · 06/05/2021 22:22

YABU. They're allowed to want to. How is it selfish? Either it will be allowed or it won't. Them saying they want to makes no difference to anyone

VeryQuaintIrene · 06/05/2021 22:22

And another and another, probably, and they don't all come from abroad. I expect it will be like the flu vaccine that has to be tweaked every year.

motherloaded · 06/05/2021 22:24

@Babygotblueyes

Neither are seeing your family, your friends, going to the restaurant, having your hair and nail done, going to the cinema, the gym, the library, having guests to your wedding, a birthday party, ...

You want to stick to essentials and "basic human rights" do you?

BloodyTinaNextdoorAgain · 06/05/2021 22:25

@bungabungaboo
And so it will probably continue. Like the flu and the new strains and variants each year. When do you think travel should be allowed?

BloodyTinaNextdoorAgain · 06/05/2021 22:27

@WarwickHunt when is your holiday booked for?
When do you think travel will be safe and no longer selfish?
