To be irritated by people wanting a foreign holiday this summer?

I know some people have family abroad and that is different.

However I know several people who either have second homes abroad or just fancy some sun, and I feel annoyed by them agitating about wanting to go abroad this summer.

AIBU to think they're being selfish?

@Yogatomorrow

It was people going on holiday last summer that would have contributed to the october/november wave last year, leading to the huge number of deaths this winter/spring.
No it wasn't. It wasn't eat out to help out either. It was the Kent variant. Viruses don't only mutate "abroad".
21Flora · 06/05/2021 20:30

Why shouldn’t we be able to go to second homes? We’ve abided by all the rules for the whole of the pandemic, we will wait until we’ve had both vaccines, if it’s legal the risks will have been considered by the government. We will be in our own house and not really mixing with hoards of people in hotel swimming pools. We’ll be on flights to America as soon as we can!

chocolateorangeinhaler · 06/05/2021 20:31

Yes you are being very unreasonable. People have been cooped up for over a year. The weather this year has been terrible so far. We've heard of thousands dying. Jobs have been lost. People are at breaking point. I hate going abroad normally but right now I'd do anything for a week somewhere hot and not the same four walls I've been staring at for the last year.

doorornottodoor · 06/05/2021 20:31

I’m one of those people. I know it’s a bit selfish but my kids have had a shocker this year (mental health) and one in particular just loves the sun. I have fixated a bit on a holiday to cheer us all up. But I can see how it would seem selfish. We will obviously do all the testing etc... if we are able to go. Maybe that helps see from our point of view? I do see yours Flowers

@pinkscrunchy oh please jog on leave @Goblin74 alone that’s such a rude comment that I’m sure you wouldn’t say to their face so why is it acceptable online??

bungabungaboo · 06/05/2021 20:35

I live in Kent and I have had the Kent variant, so fully aware of how mutation works thanks 🙏

kindlekeeper · 06/05/2021 20:35

We also need tourists here. Covent Garden today was deserted. Things need to get moving again or many millions will be unemployed and there is no money left.

ilovesooty · 06/05/2021 20:35

@LindaEllen

Of course YABU. You don't get to tell people what they've missed the most about normality.
Exactly. Provided I don't intend to break laws or guidance I don't have to justify myself to you.
Hopeisnotastrategy · 06/05/2021 20:36

It's more nuanced than this.

Some people need some sun for their health. Some need to check on elderly relatives or homes they haven't been able to get to for some time. Some will have important business to conduct, Some will know where they are going, know they can largely keep themselves to themselves. Some will live far more remotely there than here.

As a rule of thumb, people who are inconsiderate, health risking arseholes will be thus wherever they are. It is a concern, but the most important factors are the levels of Covid and vaccinations at the other end.

I agree it is a concern but it's not that straightforward.

Plumedenom · 06/05/2021 20:37

My new passport came and I was so happy I felt like taking it to bed and hugging it to sleep. Nothing makes me feel as trapped as knowing I can't get on a plane and fuck off somewhere else. Except maybe being forced to stay in my house indefinitely because I actually have covìd and have to be literally trapped in here for another week of my life! God this year is turning out to be another shit one!!

pinkscrunchy · 06/05/2021 20:37
**@pinkscrunchy* oh please jog on leave @Goblin74* alone that’s such a rude comment that I’m sure you wouldn’t say to their face so why is it acceptable online??
Why? I moved away from my family. I haven't seen them either. I made that choice and what comes along with it. They don't live in a green country, so won't be seeing them. It's very sad, but that doesn't mean I begrudge other people who are able to visit their family. You jog on.

Maggiesfarm · 06/05/2021 20:37

I don't think they are right, but I wouldn't be irritated by it, I'd think no more of it.

waitingforthenextseason · 06/05/2021 20:39

They're selfish as fuck until the pandemic world-wide is more under control.

A 'green' country from our perspective doesn't mean said country won't be allowing people in from non-green countries. So people who 'need' an international holiday will likely be mixing with people from all over the world, and mixing with people from all over on planes/trains/busses to boot, increasing the odds of bringing new variants back to the UK. We need to get it all under control first.

Plumedenom · 06/05/2021 20:39

The trouble is it's not nuanced. Frankly in a week I will have actually had and survived covìd, I'll have antibodies and for at least six months when I'm freed I'll be no risk to anyone! And yet still I will need a negative test to board a plane. The fact I have a certificate to say I had it last week and I'm recovered means nothing unless I test negative two days before the flight! That's not nuanced!

GintyMcGinty · 06/05/2021 20:40

I want to go on a holiday abroad and I really don't care it irritates some random on the interweb.

So beyond bored of "selfish" insult to anyone doing/wanting/thinking fondly of life as it used to be/we want it to be. Bore off.

DinosaurDiana · 06/05/2021 20:40

I’m desperate to go to Greece , but I won’t be going.

UrAWizHarry · 06/05/2021 20:40

YABU.

People need a break.

Countries need tourists.

Doris86 · 06/05/2021 20:42

Selfish to be sick of COVID restrictions, and wanting to get back to some sort of normality? I think all of us feel like that.

Pastanred · 06/05/2021 20:43

I’m going and can’t wait

Our vulnerable are vaccinated

I know half of Mumsnet consider themselves vulnerable (even tho unvaccinated) but reality is they are not. Hospital figures show that.
It’s more a heightened anxiety of their personal risk.

No one outside of groups 1-9 should be giving it a second thought and if they are they surely have health anxiety and need some perspective

CrystalE · 06/05/2021 20:43

Its not hard to understand - once we get vaccinated, once the majority of our destinations get vaccinated. I reckon next summer will be much better.

Honestly what is the obsession with going abroad - maybe consider how you could help the UK economy by holidaying at home instead of paying cheap rates to exploit foreign workers.

bungabungaboo · 06/05/2021 20:43

Why don't we spend our money in the UK?

This would re-generate the UK economy as well as limiting the likelihood of bringing a mutation back

I understand people like sunshine, I really, really do.

To be irritated by people wanting a foreign holiday this summer?
Pastanred · 06/05/2021 20:45

Because honestly the uk may be fine with toddlers and young kids but for families with teens it’s shit

It’s wet

It’s boring! I’d rather not go away than holiday in the UK

wellwellwellhereweare · 06/05/2021 20:46

Same as last poster. Would be good to have a focus on holidaying in the UK to help our industries recover while international travel is limited

Jennyfromtheculdesac · 06/05/2021 20:50

maybe consider how you could help the UK economy by holidaying at home instead.

There’s not enough capacity for everyone to get a holiday in the UK, particularly with so many restricted to school holidays. And UK holidays can be comparatively expensive.

bungabungaboo · 06/05/2021 20:50

I know the weather is rubbish, but really?

Where is the resilience? It is only rain!

I have teens too Wink
