To be irritated by people wanting a foreign holiday this summer?

Irishterrier · 06/05/2021 18:18

I know some people have family abroad and that is different.

However I know several people who either have second homes abroad or just fancy some sun, and I feel annoyed by them agitating about wanting to go abroad this summer.

AIBU to think they're being selfish?

People do a lot of things they did rarely 30 years ago. Who cares? We don't live in the past anymore. It's called progress. Bring on the orange and white jets! Grin

SmokedDuck · 07/05/2021 16:47

No one really knows how things will stand with covid this summer - even with vaccinations there are lot of questions that won't be answered until we see what happens over a few months or the next year. Especially when you consider that there are still many places that won't have vaccinated their populations and there are more variants which may or may not be prevented by vaccination.

I'm one of the least covid scared people I know, and I think a lot of things need to be rolled back sooner rather than later, but leisure travel is something that maybe should wait a bit longer than the others, especially since it's a luxury at the best of times.

People whining about less than perfect weather just sounds pathetic.

Vivi0 · 07/05/2021 16:54

If someone can't find a nice holiday anywhere in the UK, they aren't going to find one anywhere. Because they are miserable shits and they will take that with them.

I mean, with that attitude, you’re the one who sounds like the miserable shit.

People whining about less than perfect weather just sounds pathetic.

It’s a perfectly valid complaint. Why does it bother you so much?

Who are you to tell people what they should or shouldn’t be happy with and what they should or shouldn’t enjoy?

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 07/05/2021 16:54

@Irishterrier

I'm amazed at the entitlement of some of the answers. And the assumptions!

People saying they 'need' a fortnight in the sun truly shock me.

I have had a horrendously shit time through Covid. I'm not terrified of Covid at all, funnily enough, and am vaccinated. I usually go abroad three times a year and could afford a foreign holiday this summer. Indeed I would love one.

But I've booked a pretty rubbish UK self catering holiday because there was not much left and because I think now is not the time time go abroad to largely unvaccinated countries.

I'm enjoying reading people's angry posts though.

Smug , covid hero bullshit.

No one gives a shit ,love.

You should try it.

Bullshit.
News flash! People like different things(food wise, entertainment wise, weather,AI, attractions etc) and the UK does not offer everything that someone might want or like. It's not rocket science.

You'll feel much better as the jet takes off for sunnier climes abroad Smile! If you're sitting next to me I'll buy you a drink so we can have a toast to our holiday in the sun Grin.
Jellybabiesforbreakfast · 07/05/2021 17:19

UK holidays are poor value for money during a normal year. This year, the inflated prices are crazy. Why would you pay £££ to go sit in an uncomfortable caravan or badly furnished holiday let where you still have to cook for your family and deep-clean the place before you leave?

Do you know the thing my DC was most excited about during our last UK trip? Getting his first McDonald's happy meal at a service station. That's right...we drove five hours to an overpriced cabin in an incredibly popular tourist spot, spent five days trying manfully to 'make memories' as the rain poured down and the only thing he wants to tell his granny about is the toy he got in the bloody Happy Meal! I give up.

If people hadn't jumped on the 'we must have a holiday' bandwagon, they'd see that it's much more relaxing (and cheaper) to stay at home, not have to pack up the car and just go on a 'cooking strike' and order in for the week. Hours of time saved to sit and drink wine, relax and sleep.

When we do venture on holiday again, it will be to somewhere with guaranteed sunshine, guaranteed no cooking and (horror of horrors!) a kids' club.

😂

We all seemed to have managed all right in the past, thanks for your concern!

We got enough weekends and bank holidays to spend in the UK, but some of us have more interesting things to do than staying stuck at home all the time.

So many places in the world, what a narrow-minded individual to think their little country is everything. Explains the reasoning I suppose.

Nanalisa60 · 07/05/2021 17:24

Yep !! We have decided not to bother with going abroad this year as I think it’s selfish, we should be doing what Australia and New Zealand are doing saying sorry you can’t go!! It’s only another year, let’s see how things play out , go on holiday in the U.K. , let’s get everybody vacated and see if they work with the COVID-19 veterans .

KC934 · 07/05/2021 17:25

It's stupid to expect a summer holiday this year. We're still in a global pandemic ffs. And what do people think it's going to be like in foreign countries? You'll still need to adhere to social distancing rules, a lot of places won't be open, either.

If people want to waste their time and money for a limited experience, leave them to it. No doubt they'll come back complaining about all the restrictions that they had to adhere to, like it's really that surprising.

newnortherner111 · 07/05/2021 17:25

The people who have upset the OP will now be even more so. The 12 countries are in practical terms only four- Portugal, Iceland, Israel and Gibraltar. Australia and New Zealand will not accept you into the country, and the other places such as the Falkland Islands probably don't have hotels or the direct flights.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 07/05/2021 17:26

Jelly, try cruising when they restart. My kids love the kids' clubs, no cooking, unpack once, multiple ports. We're going with my family in summer of 2022 Caribbean cruise. Cannot wait.

Cindersrellie · 07/05/2021 17:28

It's not really selfish though, is it, if you're following the guidance? Countries wouldn't open for tourists if they didn't want to.

Scotland32 · 07/05/2021 17:28

Why is it your business?!

All four of those places sound great! I'd love to go to Madeira. And to Israel. Fuck staying here freezing to death in some over-priced shithole with locals who are pissed off you're there.
motherloaded · 07/05/2021 17:29

We were already in a pandemic last year, still managed enjoyable holidays abroad last summer. You just need to chose well, this summer will be even better.

I'd be more worried of the crowds staying here!

Carpedimum · 07/05/2021 17:29

Think about the ongoing devastating impact upon the aviation sector - it’s going to take years to return to 2019 levels.

Doghead · 07/05/2021 17:29

You are being totally unreasonable.

Pinktoes77 · 07/05/2021 17:31

Don't mind people needing a holiday, a lot has happened in the last year or so more so for some than others, thats not what I consider selfish...selfish would be travelling to a red list country then travelling on to another country to avoid quarantine that puts everyone at risk again.Have a holiday, have fun,be safe Smile.

33goingon64 · 07/05/2021 17:35

Interested to know if you have more tolerance if people drive and stay in their own property. So, avoiding airports, planes, hotels, restaurants.

minniemomo · 07/05/2021 17:35

I want a holiday, a trip planned for 18 months (pre covid) thus summer is abroad. I'll be going unless they stop me

bondgirl76 · 07/05/2021 17:35

You sure your not a tad jealous? no skin off your nose is it

Going on holiday is inherently unsafe. Lots of things can go wrong. That's life. I don't blame people for doing whatever they can to avoid quarantine because it's a total rip off in the UK. Friends did quarantine in Turkey and they have a beautiful suite with a balcony, were allowed in the courtyard for exercise 2 hours/day, great food, room cleaned, all for less than the £1750 charged here for 500 calories a day of shit rations you wouldn't serve a prisoner and boxed into a tiny room. Fuck that.
