To be irritated by people wanting a foreign holiday this summer?

I know some people have family abroad and that is different.

However I know several people who either have second homes abroad or just fancy some sun, and I feel annoyed by them agitating about wanting to go abroad this summer.

AIBU to think they're being selfish?

Hmm I’m not sure about this. I live abroad and haven’t seen friends or family for nearly a year, I desperately desperately miss them and they are planning a trip here because we can reconnect in glorious sunshine. BUT I really don’t feel it is safe enough yet so I’m very torn!

Me neither. That’s why I’d rather foreign travel remains severely restricted. I don’t want people bringing back variants that trigger fresh restrictions (and kill people).

YABU

What is wrong with people?! I have worked the entire pandemic, in the nhs, patient facing, with a husband at home with cancer. It has been hard and I have cared for people with covid, in the fear I would bring it home to my family.

Go do one if you think I'm sitting indoors and not enjoying my life every single day, let alone this summer.

Mere1 · 07/05/2021 17:45

Those travelling abroad could bring new variants and that would undo all that has been achieved to date.

Definately · 07/05/2021 17:46

@motherloaded

We were already in a pandemic last year, still managed enjoyable holidays abroad last summer. You just need to chose well, this summer will be even better.

I'd be more worried of the crowds staying here!

It didn't exactly turn out brilliantly last summer Confused

schoolrummum · 07/05/2021 17:49

Oh dear. How is that hair shirt for size? So, you are miserable sitting at home ringing your hands about folk going abroad and are going to be even more miserable going on your very virtuous UK break? Well done. If people leave with a negative test and return with a negative test or have to quarantine, what's it to you? We all make choices and as long as people are taking responsibility for their own choices, why do you even care?

AVY3 · 07/05/2021 17:49

I can’t wait to go on holiday and will do so as soon as we are allowed. We have been vaccinated, have had COVID already. We need to move on with life now...... if you are worried stay in and don’t go away but don’t be annoyed with anyone else that wants to go away. People need to assess their own risks.....

It’s fucking freezing here and it’s May. I won’t be going on holiday (of course) but I will bloody well moan about not being able to!

Yawn. Covid and its variants are here to stay. It'll become endemic. Life needs to go on.
Definately · 07/05/2021 17:53

@osbertthesyrianhamster

People come from all across the world to visit the UK,

Those pesky blighters, travelling abroad. They need to stay at home! Grin

Pity the people who brought the Indian variant over didn't.
Roboticcarrot · 07/05/2021 17:54

The green list (2 of which won't let us in anyway) looks pretty crap, I'm sure those who can't be arsed with overpriced tickets, long queues and the risk of having it cancelled last minute or having to isolate in a foreign country if they become symptomatic are missing out on much.

The world didn't suddenly become ready to move on the day you were vaccinated.

Completely agree with you, especially when you consider how badly affected our own hospitality industry has been affected. People should staycation this year to help the businesses that have suffered here! 100% first world problem, people going on as if a year or two of no holidays is going to end their lives or whatever 🙄

APinchOfLOL · 07/05/2021 17:59

YABU, let them go. Who cares.

Personally, I couldn't be bothered with all the faff involved in going abroad. I have booked 2 holidays in the UK and am really looking forward to them. Fewer crowds in the summer.

There are thousands of people and millions of pounds in this country also affected by no foreign holidays.
mermaidsariel · 07/05/2021 18:02

Why shouldn’t people want to go abroad? Look at the bloody weather in this godforsaken country. Stop being so judgemental.

GintyMcGinty · 07/05/2021 18:04

I intend to. I have a staycation booked. But I would also love to go abroad as well. I like it to be an 'and' not and 'or'.

people going on as if a year or two of no holidays is going to end their lives or whatever

Enough with the hyperbole - no one is saying they think their lives will end.

Lena18 · 07/05/2021 18:05

With the year we have all had i dont think its selfish at all. Everyone is different i dont think i switch off the same at home. And after our wedding was postponed, i was put on furlough, redundancy and new job for dp i have everything crossed for our honeymoon in Spain in September and i dont think it's selfish in the slightest

Jellybabiesforbreakfast · 07/05/2021 18:06

When I see how much people are trying to charge for a week this summer in a fairly grubby property anywhere near the coast with few amenities and a 9am checkout, I'm not overcome with the urge to support UK businesses.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 07/05/2021 18:08

People should staycation this year to help the businesses that have suffered here!

Well, it's not a staycation if you're leaving your home to sleep elsewhere overnight, it's a holiday.

And I see no reason why I should pay inflated prices to 'help' businesses here? Fuck that. This place is a rip off as it is.

Haven't been on holiday abroad since 2016. As soon as I can, we're going.

People "should" is nonsense. People should do what they want (within the limits of the law of course) and should spend their money where they want.

Mary54 · 07/05/2021 18:09

YANBU

German government is under pressure to abandon its risk-based vaccination priority list because people are demanding vaccination in time to go abroad in the summer holidays without having to test or quarantine on their return. And this comes after we’ve had six months of being told to wait patiently as the most vulnerable groups need to be protected first.

This in spades
Hellsbells35 · 07/05/2021 18:11

Most holidays will be cancelled anyway so don’t worry. They’ll be a lot of people rolling them over to next year again. Unless their planning on going to the Falkland Islands?
