To be irritated by people wanting a foreign holiday this summer?

Irishterrier · 06/05/2021 18:18

I know some people have family abroad and that is different.

However I know several people who either have second homes abroad or just fancy some sun, and I feel annoyed by them agitating about wanting to go abroad this summer.

AIBU to think they're being selfish?

This is mumsnet where people feel entitled to a holiday. ‘Oh but I neeeeeed a holidaaaay!’. No, you want want one. Nothing wrong with that, but don’t make out that’s it’s a need when it isn’t.

Keepitonthedownlow · 07/05/2021 09:37

What a ridiculous comparison. So buying food in a UK shop is the same as travelling hours in a plane so you can get a tan on your butt cheeks

Why making life a race to the bottom? We know, we need food and shelter, everything else is a luxury. What a life!

Keeping healthy physically and mentally is a lot more than a "want", it is a need...

“No scientist is saying holidays are a good idea.”

Are these the same scientists who predicted there would be another wave of the virus after every adult has been vaccinated, worse than the second wave? Confused

motherloaded · 07/05/2021 09:41

Keepitonthedownlow

At least be consistent, either your restrict life to absolute "essentials" or you don't..

Keep telling yourself you are not a jealous hypocrite if you want, it won't affect the rest of my year or my holidays.Smile

It cannot be good to be so angry and resentful, can it?

Keepitonthedownlow · 07/05/2021 09:43

@motherloaded can't wait till summer when your thread appears complaining about airport queues, lack of social distancing, quarantine, local lockdowns etc. While we have genuinely relaxing holidays in the UK, knowing that we're not contributing to bring variants back en masse.

And remember, Karma is a bitxh.

Keepitonthedownlow · 07/05/2021 09:45

@motherloaded jealous, why would I be jealous? It's going to be a nightmare. No pity is more appropriate/mixed with horror.

Anyway, your mind is set but some others reading this might realise the madness of it.

KeepSmiling89 · 07/05/2021 09:46

@BiscoffAddict totally agree!

I work in the NHS and we're still being told to use video call appointments as a first point of call for seeing children instead of face to face in a controlled clinic environment with full PPE and disinfecting anything they touch, but pubs and restaurants can open and people will soon be able to travel abroad.

Each to their own and all and if going for a foreign holiday is a priority then I envy their lives. DH and I are more excited about seeing my in laws every other weekend again as they live a half hour drive away.

motherloaded · 07/05/2021 09:47

Keepitonthedownlow

Unless you are staying home, you are an absolute hypocrite...

and you'd be happy to know that going on holiday abroad doesn't mean we don't go on holiday in the UK too when we come back. I would be dreading the crowds and lack of social distancing a lot more here if I was you!

It wasn't great last year, this year will be worst. Abroad was so much more peaceful and less crowded then, it will be the same this year.

motherloaded · 07/05/2021 09:49

The first people to book a holiday abroad around me are critical frontline NHS worker. If they feel it's ok to go (after spending months on covid wards and other hospital departments) I am good.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 07/05/2021 10:21

But I've booked a pretty rubbish UK self catering holiday because there was not much left and because I think now is not the time time go abroad to largely unvaccinated countries.

That's nice dear. Will you be wearing a hair shirt while you're at your "rubbish holiday"?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 07/05/2021 10:26

Oh here we go again. Change the fucking record. Yes, you are being unreasonable. Next stupid question please?

DurhamDurham · 07/05/2021 10:29

The martyrdom is exhausting Hmm

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 07/05/2021 10:30

Well if I didn’t think the majority of people were twats before this pandemic then I certainly do now.

People have very short memories. Everyone flocking to Eat Out To Spread It About were partly the cause of our winter wave, as were the holidays abroad. This government has made some shit decisions and still people are clinging to what they say/allow instead of making their own judgments. No scientist is saying holidays are a good idea. Why do you think that might be? I, like anyone with an ounce of sense, saw where the free for all last summer was heading....and I was right. Straight into a winter lockdown.

However, this lockdown I made sure that we were sorted. I wasn’t having our lives ruined even more by selfish cunts who are that unhappy with their lives that they can’t forgo a week getting pissed in Benidorm with their sunburnt kids for a couple of years. So, when this summer inevitable goes tits up and we end up in another lockdown then I will know that my children are having the best private online education while yours fall more behind, I won’t have to work, have private healthcare, on priority supermarket lists for deliveries, DH is in a secure, work from home job and we can move into a holiday cottage on my parent’s grounds and mix freely.

So, although I think you are utter selfish twats for going away, you’ll only be affecting yourselves and not me or mine grin

And I shall be watching with glee when you are all weeping and wailing on the news when borders close to holiday destinations and you have to fork out extra money to get back or are stuck in 10 hour queues. I hope it’s all worth it.

Why people also have to state that they are NHS so deserve a holiday I don’t know. confused It concerns me that such stupid people actually work in the NHS and you would think that, having worked in such terrible conditions, they would want to do everything they could to minimise that happening again.

*Also, if we have to lockdown again we have to prop up every industry. By shutting our borders as best we can and keeping our economy and way of life as normal as possible we will have money to prop up the travel industry until it gets moving again.

Anyway, good luck twats!!! Enjoy your holiday! And enjoy winter lockdown.*

Well aren't you a nasty twat.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 07/05/2021 10:32

Sorry that last post was meant to quote @SunshiningBetty

motherloaded · 07/05/2021 10:43

I am not sure that SunshiningBetty realises that most of us didn't wait until now to "prepare for a lockdown" but did all that before last March! and also managed to squeeze a couple of holidays abroad before last Christmas. Grin

Seriously, resenting other people only affects YOU, no one else. What a waste of time and energy.

Anyone else planning a quick gateaway to Gibraltar in the next few weeks until borders really reopen?

Keepitonthedownlow · 07/05/2021 10:52

For Pete's sake! Going abroad and bringing back variants does affect EVERYONE.

I need a holiday to stop me wanting one.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 07/05/2021 11:05

Cool, let's all be terrified forever then and stop living our lives. Hmm

might as well join us then Wink
SugarCrash1 · 07/05/2021 11:12

Covid restrictions aside, I have more sympathy with people who don’t want holidays at all because they are too busy growing prize marrows, or whatever else they like doing than with people who think a holiday abroad is an annual necessity.
People need to find something to make them happy at home.
On Covid, I tend to blame the government rather than the individuals who went abroad last year for the lonely, locked down winter we’ve just had.

Vivi0 · 07/05/2021 11:13

Where do some of you get the mind numbing arrogance to think that you are entitled to dictate to people what they need and what they don’t need, and to then label them as selfish for not agreeing with you.

Some of you might not NEED a holiday, but I think you need some therapy. It’s not normal to get this worked up over people living their own fucking lives.

motherloaded · 07/05/2021 11:19

People need to find something to make them happy at home.

Who say they haven't? You might enjoy being home, but that doesn't stop you from exercising, having a hobby, meeting friends, going out, going on day trips... Who likes to be on house arrest?

I can't imagine being willingly stuck at home, or even willingly stuck in my town.

Going abroad is just going a bit further. Holidays are always a big part of my budget, I am happier with a smaller house but more regular trips.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 07/05/2021 11:32

Foreign holidays vs UK holidays - it's the new Brexit folks Grin
