To be irritated by people wanting a foreign holiday this summer?

Irishterrier · 06/05/2021 18:18

I know some people have family abroad and that is different.

However I know several people who either have second homes abroad or just fancy some sun, and I feel annoyed by them agitating about wanting to go abroad this summer.

AIBU to think they're being selfish?

@ilovesooty

I wonder how many sitting in judgement of permitted overseas travel with testing and quarantine compliance ate out to help out and mixed with unvaccinated family and friends indoors at Christmas?

Not to mention those who have bent the rules and guidance to suit themselves all along.

Why of course! There was a UK disastrous pandemic outcome because some/many fellow Brits where directly “inadvertently” irresponsible for ensuring this happened here in the UK. Why do you think there was the so called Kent or London mutating variant if people here followed the rules and not forever thinking they can cheat science and selfishly get away with it. It’s a disease that naturally hits the most vulnerable worst and that is whether by age, medical vulnerabilities or baseline economic health. Forever short term me ism is not going to cut it and will only sustain cycles of further troubles of open and closed societies. Fun in the sun over the summer and winter of discontent to follow (potentially?) We all experienced this pattern already and the only new bit this time round is the limited aid of vaccination until they are beaten by new evolving variants. Hopefully not all doom and gloom but unless we seriously moderate our global Covid footprint we may be pushing the science too far. If not here then in less Covid secure nations overseas. Not safe until most of the globe is safe. Look at South Asia and direct importation of issues in Leicester (again as usual) and other UK localities with such links.

People saying they 'need' a fortnight in the sun truly shock me.

well, be shocked. Holidays are a basic necessity for my family and me. Life is too short to be locked up.

it's not WW3 or the black plague, we follow the rules, but will make the most of what we can.

It's entirely up to you if you want to put your life on hold and be miserable and bitter about it. I am not doing that.

Fizbosshoes · 07/05/2021 08:23

I'd love a holiday abroad.unfortunately we generally dont have the budget for it, so for us, not much has changed.
I dont think its unreasonable to want a holiday abroad, and, it's up to the government to decide what's legal or permitted. Theres no point suggesting or advising people dont go , if they are not breaking any rules why wouldnt they?

I did feel a bit Hmm at a family we know who went away for xmas despite being in tier 4.

catwomanhatwoman · 07/05/2021 08:32

I agree op, it's going the same way as last year or worse. Im very concerned that a strain of virus that vaccines don't protect against could be brought back and we'll spend another whole winter in lockdown and be back to square one.

Then you are going to be living in fear for a very long time.
Cheeseandlobster · 07/05/2021 08:43

Truly shocked? Oh do bore off. What about the travel industry? Or it selfish for people to want to keep their jobs too? I went away twice last year. It wasnt illegal, I followed all the precautions and I had a great time. I needed it for my mental health after supporting vulnerable people in crisis during covid. I think you are posting just to be deliberately goady

AlmostSummer21 · 07/05/2021 09:04

@Cocolemon

I would not use the word selfish, but unwise.

We are in the middle of a global pandemic and we risk introducing/ bring back variants which risk the vaccination programme being successful.

I get it:

Travel Industry needs help
People have had a horrific year and need to relax - I work in the nhs frontline myself.

I still think it's madness and will not be going abroad until globally we are in a much better place.

Exactly - except I don't work for the NHS!

Thank you - no matter what you for the NHS, we need you ALL & I'm very grateful for you ALL 💐

It has nothing to do with jealousy 🙄
AlmostSummer21 · 07/05/2021 09:08

@GiveMeTulipsfromAmsterdam

Why is it selfish to want to go on holiday? Jealously isn't nice. You actually 'get annoyed' because some people 'want some sun' - wow - maybe they have worked hard/cared for children and loved ones/lost loved ones - who knows and it really isn't important.

Get 'annoyed' about more important things than people hoping to go and get some sun!

@Cocolemon

Previous post attached to the incorrect post, sorry!

@GiveMeTulipsfromAmsterdam

It's NOTHING to do with jealousy!

I entirely agree with you.
All those that are saying how much they need one, obviously don't understand the difference between need and want!
I am astonished that we seem to have learned nothing and are letting people in and out of the country.
There really should be, imo, Restrictions on all entry to the UK. And returning from an unnecessary holiday wouldn't be a justification OR everyone having to quarantine in a hotel.
It's madness. Throughout the news there are stories of how people are trying to get around the rules. And sadly this is probably going to only go one way.
Surely we'd better off with no travel this year. Let the rest of the world get to grips with vaccinating etc. Then hopefully next year the landscape would be different. If the situation isn't improved, then really it's not going to hurt anyone if they can't leave the UK for their holiday is it?[/quote]
Absolutely.

Hairbrush123 · 07/05/2021 09:13

Why, OP? Why are you agitated that there will be very few countries on the green list with high vaccination rates and low infections? Or that people want to support an industry that directly employs millions of people? Why would you say that’s selfish? No research so far has shown that vaccines aren’t effective for any variant.

If anything, allowing the government to publish this traffic light system and people choosing not to travel citing personal concerns would be selfish. It’s a thoroughly thought through idea. I can’t see more than 7 countries being on there for now.

Hairbrush123 · 07/05/2021 09:18

To all of those saying “next year will be better”. It certainly won’t in terms of vaccination roll out. Continental Europe will have vaccinated 75% of their populations by the end of July. The US has done a very good job already. It’s the rest of the world that will be affected.

The pandemic can’t end until the whole world has reached herd immunity and with this vaccine nationalism and countries rejecting the idea of waiving the vaccine patents to not allow poorer countries to copy their vaccines to establish faster rollouts. This will continue until 2024. Unless you want to spend all your time in the UK until then - life will not be better for the vast majority of the world by next year.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 07/05/2021 09:19

When will people realise the ol' 'selfish' label doesn't stick anymore. NO ONE CARES besides you, wasting emotion on it all. YABU.

Keepitonthedownlow · 07/05/2021 09:27

Yes it's selfish - particularly for those who are flying. TUI et al advertising should be ashamed of themselves.

SunshiningBetty · 07/05/2021 09:28

Well if I didn’t think the majority of people were twats before this pandemic then I certainly do now.

People have very short memories. Everyone flocking to Eat Out To Spread It About were partly the cause of our winter wave, as were the holidays abroad. This government has made some shit decisions and still people are clinging to what they say/allow instead of making their own judgments. No scientist is saying holidays are a good idea. Why do you think that might be? I, like anyone with an ounce of sense, saw where the free for all last summer was heading....and I was right. Straight into a winter lockdown.

However, this lockdown I made sure that we were sorted. I wasn’t having our lives ruined even more by selfish cunts who are that unhappy with their lives that they can’t forgo a week getting pissed in Benidorm with their sunburnt kids for a couple of years. So, when this summer inevitable goes tits up and we end up in another lockdown then I will know that my children are having the best private online education while yours fall more behind, I won’t have to work, have private healthcare, on priority supermarket lists for deliveries, DH is in a secure, work from home job and we can move into a holiday cottage on my parent’s grounds and mix freely.

So, although I think you are utter selfish twats for going away, you’ll only be affecting yourselves and not me or mine Grin

And I shall be watching with glee when you are all weeping and wailing on the news when borders close to holiday destinations and you have to fork out extra money to get back or are stuck in 10 hour queues. I hope it’s all worth it.

Why people also have to state that they are NHS so deserve a holiday I don’t know. Confused It concerns me that such stupid people actually work in the NHS and you would think that, having worked in such terrible conditions, they would want to do everything they could to minimise that happening again.

Also, if we have to lockdown again we have to prop up every industry. By shutting our borders as best we can and keeping our economy and way of life as normal as possible we will have money to prop up the travel industry until it gets moving again.

Anyway, good luck twats!!! Enjoy your holiday! And enjoy winter lockdown.

Keepitonthedownlow · 07/05/2021 09:28

@osbertthesyrianhamster just because people don't care about being labelled selfish,don't mean they aren't...

Keepitonthedownlow · 07/05/2021 09:28

*doesn't

MaxNormal · 07/05/2021 09:28

The more I read "selfish", the more I'll enjoy the sunshine when I go Grin

motherloaded · 07/05/2021 09:29

To go on holiday in the winter, it's either a ski holiday or a long-haul flight, it's tricky.. If we must be in lockdown, I'd rather winter than summer frankly.

And not being allowed a holiday IS being in lockdown for some of us!

So bore off, but maybe stay away from social media. As soon as the borders open, there will be LOADS of holiday photos around Grin.

StayingHere · 07/05/2021 09:29

People can 'want' as much as they like, it's not unreasonable to want a holiday after all this shit. But people actually insisting on going, yeah it's a bit tiresome because it is almost certain to bring us another wave of covid. Hopefully not as bad with the vaccines.

Keepitonthedownlow · 07/05/2021 09:32

ConstanceGracy · 07/05/2021 09:33

Be irritated all you like but why can’t people want to travel abroad ?
I’m irritated that people keep saying “don’t travel abroad, spend your money here!”
So I get to spend a grand for a week in Cornwall? No thanks.
I love my holidays and if we are following all the guidelines then I couldn’t give a shite what anyone else thinks .

motherloaded · 07/05/2021 09:33

SunshiningBetty

we WILL enjoy our holidayS, thank you Smile
calling us twats won't spoil them.

Out of curiosity, are you still shielding? not sending your kids to school, not commuting, not seeing friends, not going to shops? Are you really?

Because either you are a complete hypocrite and begrudge others for doing what you don't want to spend money on, but not taking any steps yourself,

or you ARE shielding and doing everything to but making your life is a misery and completely wasted. If you end up in a hospital bed for any reason next year, you will bitterly regretting wasting your life that way when you COULD have enjoyed yourself.

Cheer up and live, it's better for the complexion.
