To be irritated by people wanting a foreign holiday this summer?

Irishterrier · 06/05/2021 18:18

I know some people have family abroad and that is different.

However I know several people who either have second homes abroad or just fancy some sun, and I feel annoyed by them agitating about wanting to go abroad this summer.

AIBU to think they're being selfish?

Fair point @JesusInTheCabbageVan !

Jellybabiesforbreakfast · 06/05/2021 22:30

In various tourist hotspots in the UK, a degree of hostility and aggression to perceived 'outsiders' has been demonstrated during the past year to the extent that I would seriously think twice about visiting those locations in the future. 'Keep out' signs, vandalism, haranguing people in the street and informing on people to the police. Add in poor value for money (especially with inflated prices this year) and generally crap weather and it amazes me that there are people who still want to visit these areas.

I agree a holiday is not a necessity but, if people do want one, I completely understand why they want it to be a foreign one.

BloodyTinaNextdoorAgain · 06/05/2021 22:30

@GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman what point do things need to be at for you to be comfortable travelling abroad again?
The chances are there will always be new versions of the virus so do you think you will never travel abroad from now on?

gottakeeponmovin · 06/05/2021 22:32

I plan to visit my second home abroad and have booked a holiday in the sun. I will have had both my jabs by then. Sorry if that annoys you

CloudPop · 06/05/2021 22:32

@bungabungaboo

The variant that is currently sweeping across India has been found in the UK, how did it get here? Travel Fortunately the vaccine works on this variant but........ There will be another one
Yes, and another one after that. Is your assumption that virus mutations only take place outside of the UK?
SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/05/2021 22:35

After the past year+ of lockdowns and covid, I don’t blame anyone for wanting a holiday.

Personally, I don’t want to go on holiday until things are back to normal - I don’t want a holiday with social distancing and masks etc. But we tend to go on the sort of holiday where we go to stately homes and museums - the sort of things that could be closed or restricted by covid. If what someone wants is to lie in the sunshine, by a pool or on the beach, I’d assume that is far less likely to be spoiled by covid measures, and I can see the point of going.

I hope that makes sense - my brain seems to have gone on strike.

BloodyTinaNextdoorAgain · 06/05/2021 22:36

@chloeb8 so you think covid will disappear?
If it doesn't and the virus continues to evolve similar to the way that the flu has, new strains each year, do you think all countries should close the borders forever?

Lucaslucas1612 · 06/05/2021 22:40

I am absolutely desperate for a holiday and hope we can go on our booked holiday at the end of July. We had a nightmare during lockdown affecting my MH and my sons. I haven't had a holiday since 2019. There is more to life than COVID and I am not staying at home forever more incase a variant may or may not come. If people are responsible with the tests enabling them to go on holiday and these rules are enforced properly the risk is low. I am not willing to sit around worrying about what ifs. I would have had my first vaccination.

TUI have launched bargain cv19 tests, - see below

Others will follow I am sure. Only for TUI customers

YANBU

Can’t imagine their healthcare workers are pleased at the prospect of loads of outsiders unnecessarily filling their hospitals back up.

bluetongue · 06/05/2021 22:49

Good on people doing what they can within the rules to keep living their life.

I’m in Australia and even I’m going abroad in August this year! Sure it’s to New Zealand, for a snow holiday not sun and it’s the only place I can go but by god I’m making the most of what I can do. There’s a small chance of a border closure or flights being paused but I refuse to stop that letting me travel.

MaryShelley1818 · 06/05/2021 22:54

I can't wait to go on holiday and am booked for the Balaerics in September. We cancelled 3 holidays last year and my DS is only 3, travelling and going on holiday was of huge importance to me as a parent and we've missed enough time. We do also have UK breaks booked. It will also be DDs first holiday and I want her to experience a warm sandy beach and warm waters to Bob in as a baby like DS did at her age.

alpenguin · 06/05/2021 23:01

I think yababitu - I want a foreign holiday. Sadly it’s not going to happen for a variety of reasons, the least of which is Covid. It’s unreasonable to be irritated by those wanting a holiday, it’s a bit different to be irritated by those booking one regardless of the situation.

I do find this insistence that a foreign holiday is a right of an individual that overrules the safety of others and society a bit odd but I’m not surprised by it. When the government keep making daft promises they can’t possibly fulfil it produces expectations, eg the expectation that people will be able to head off abroad in a few weeks without issue. I’d hoped by now that the general public would stop believing a word the government and that twat boris says when it comes to lockdown easing but people hear what they want to and right now they want to hear that a week in salou is safe.

CherryJane · 06/05/2021 23:02

I work in aviation. I've lost 2 jobs and been home 14 months.

I cannot wait to get flying back up and running. Thousands of jobs will be reinstated.

I do think we need strict protocols to deal with the covid threat though and think if people don't want to abide by whatever these end up being then they shouldn't fly.

PennyinmyPocket · 06/05/2021 23:06

YANBU thinking people who want to go abroad on holiday, at this time, are selfish, if you are directly affected by their decision.

However, The UK Govt need Guinea Pigs to see how people and their wider family are affected. If those “desperate” to go on holiday are happy for them and their wider families to be guinea pigs for Govt Stats then I have no objection. It’s their decision.

I’ll be keeping my distance from people and wearing my mask for the foreseeable future 😷

We need guinea pigs to test the Covid waters 😉

SoupDragon · 06/05/2021 23:08

Can’t imagine their healthcare workers are pleased at the prospect of loads of outsiders unnecessarily filling their hospitals back up.

What would that be happening?

SoupDragon · 06/05/2021 23:08

Why. Not what.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 06/05/2021 23:12

I appreciate there is (as always) a spectrum of viewpoints. I believe balance and sustainable longer term pragmatism would be mutually beneficial here.

Some of us self identify as perpetual internationalists in the sense that we hold multiple nationalities with close family members, friends and business links dotted globally. As a family by necessity (pre Covid) there are jurisdictional residency requirements too.

Pre Covid we have (like most) been accustomed to frequent international travel with both professional business demands in addition to much non essential overseas leisure.

I am however fully appreciative that there is a global diversity of rapidly changeable pandemic impacts and that this by default facilitated by inadvertent unchecked asymptomatic movements of peoples.

That said, I am minded to curtail international travel unless critical to citizenship requirements or business matters that insists on in person arrangements.

Overseas leisure travel will therefore (even if permitted end to end) be on hold until it is clear this can be scientifically sustainable for all involved to prevent further health risks. It is looking likely that this summer would be a staycation within the British Isles should pandemic conditions allow.

Ideally for longer term sustainability we may be well advised to allow for some containment of the pandemic by temporarily refraining from unnecessary travel and permit the wider international administration of vaccination.

SoupDragon · 06/05/2021 23:12

Has the OP bothered to come back and engage with the thread?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/05/2021 23:13

I do think that travel abroad is something that we need to put aside for now.

A few people might be able to afford to go on holiday abroad this summer, and perhaps would be happy to have restrictions on the winter to pay for this. I don’t think that the holiday chances of a few are worth sacrificing freedoms for everyone at home.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 06/05/2021 23:14

Was in Jamaica 3 weeks ago... I will admit we kind of missed the Brits!

In case anyone cares about my opinion and experience... yes go if you can. The locals we spoke to want people back. A lot of them are still hurting financially and depend on tourism money to, ya know, feed their family, have a place to live and so on. I bought more crap this trip than I ever have just to be able to put money in someone’s hand.

Oh and when I returned I had apparently forgotten myself and admitted to my boss it was the first time in a year I didn’t feel like stabbing someone... oops. Luckily he laughed and agreed with me since he had been on vacation.

My advice to anyone still reading, jump through the hoops...get tested if it’s required, GO and don’t look back.

Babygotblueyes · 06/05/2021 23:17

@motherloaded. Yes.

m0therofdragons · 06/05/2021 23:17

People who can’t afford holidays will often find reasons to criticise. What’s the point of vaccinating the nation if we still have to curtail our activities? Everyone I work with is hoping to go on holiday abroad this year and we’re in a hospital. We all need some proper family time away having spent the year working, spending time away from our families. I’ve stuck to every rule (which I’m regularly told on mn threads is foolish and no one is) so if the government says it’s fine then I’m going. Couldn’t give two hoots if someone thinks I’m selfish - I’ll be having a lovely time in the sun.
