To think neighbour's behaviour is a bit odd?

... Or I'm probably just nosy and bored. My neighbours are a couple in their 30s (I'd guess.) I recently found out he's a successful former Intelligence Officer.

They are nice, friendly and helpful, though I can't help but sometimes feel there's something slightly off. They're quite private about their work, which is understandable. They frequently disappear for long periods of time (often weeks or months.) Whenever I speak to them, they often appear like they don't know what the other one is going on about, almost like they don't communicate about anything despite living in the same house (I know this is perfectly possible, though they seem a happy couple, so I don't see any reason why they wouldn't communicate much.)

Anyway, yesterday evening, an old housemate of mine appeared, using her old key to let herself in. Me and my boyfriend had some drinks with her. She's always been fond of the old herb so she was doing that and we were chatting and drinking for a few hours. When we went to bed I'd got five messages from my neighbour that had been deleted. I thought maybe she was complaining about noise but she messaged me back again today asking if we had weed up there and can I hook her up with a dealer Confused I said I don't smoke, but can send her the details of my old housemate. She kept being really eager asking if the girl would be coming back and when.

I'm confused by a couple of things

  1. I'm friendly with my neighbours, but not especially close. Is it a bit weird that she has asked me to put her in touch with a dealer.
  2. Is weed that hard to source in a big city?
  3. She told me that my housemate knows her under a different name. My housemate told me when she first moved in that she has a different name to the one I know her as. Her post etc. all comes under the name I know her as. I was curious about her job, but she doesn't have a LinkedIn profile. They barely ever go out as far as I can tell.

AIBU to think this is all quite odd?

Yeah you took some mushrooms last night as well didn't you?

Don't worry, just sip some warm tea and put some relaxing music on. Your neighbours aren't spies and this is not an elaborate police sting.

We've all been there Op, you'll start to come back to reality too and it'll just feel like a weird dream.

RickiTarr · 04/05/2021 20:22

I recently found out he's a successful former Intelligence Officer.

That sentence makes zero sense. I hardly know where to start. How would you find out? How can anyone be a “successful former” anything? You mean he was previously successful at a secret thing? Just what?

😂🍿

Ethelfromnumber73 · 04/05/2021 20:25

May one the first to nominate this for classics Wink

MargaretThursday · 04/05/2021 20:26

I'm guessing you're writing this book by the Riverside, going from your username.

SaltAndVinegarSandwiches · 04/05/2021 20:27

Very odd. Any one working in that field would be unlikely to go buying weed from random neighbours they don't know as there can be drug tests and any history of drug taking would end your career.

Ethelfromnumber73 · 04/05/2021 20:28

May I be...

Wheresmybiscuit3 · 04/05/2021 20:34

Hmmm. Tell us more?

frumpety · 04/05/2021 20:39

What do you and your boyfriend and ex-housemate work as ?

leopardprintpants · 04/05/2021 20:43

Why does your spy neighbour have your number? 🕵🏻‍♂️

ThePrisonPlanet · 04/05/2021 20:48

Ask her if she can lend you a fiver and when she opens her wallet look to see whether she has a licence to kill.

Imnothereforthedrama · 04/05/2021 20:48

@leopardprintpants

Why does your spy neighbour have your number? 🕵🏻‍♂️
Because she is a former successful spy obvs . Not sure why they couldn’t use their spy skills to get weed though . Hmm

Haha Grin

I wonder how many spelling mistakes you can make when asking Can you hook me up with your dealer? via whatsapp.

I suppose she could've got her "you're" and "your" muddled up? Always an embarrassing grammatical error especially when messaging someone you see regularly.

Just following for the deletion. What do we reckon? OP gets it deleted for being too outing?

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 04/05/2021 21:12

Intelligence officer doesn't mean they were an MI6 007 spy, it's just a job title, you can be an Intelligence Officer in the military and police.

That doesn’t really affect the weirdness of the OP, TBF. Grin

Are they Mr. And Mrs. Smith by any chance?

ThePrisonPlanet · 04/05/2021 21:20

Maybe she’s undercover from the drugs squad.

That definitely clears up any confusion here.

This must be a movie plot

SmileyClare · 04/05/2021 21:23

I hope it's a movie plot. I'd love a British version of Breaking Bad.

warmandtoasty2day · 04/05/2021 21:23

surprised this is still here.
