To think neighbour's behaviour is a bit odd?

... Or I'm probably just nosy and bored. My neighbours are a couple in their 30s (I'd guess.) I recently found out he's a successful former Intelligence Officer.

They are nice, friendly and helpful, though I can't help but sometimes feel there's something slightly off. They're quite private about their work, which is understandable. They frequently disappear for long periods of time (often weeks or months.) Whenever I speak to them, they often appear like they don't know what the other one is going on about, almost like they don't communicate about anything despite living in the same house (I know this is perfectly possible, though they seem a happy couple, so I don't see any reason why they wouldn't communicate much.)

Anyway, yesterday evening, an old housemate of mine appeared, using her old key to let herself in. Me and my boyfriend had some drinks with her. She's always been fond of the old herb so she was doing that and we were chatting and drinking for a few hours. When we went to bed I'd got five messages from my neighbour that had been deleted. I thought maybe she was complaining about noise but she messaged me back again today asking if we had weed up there and can I hook her up with a dealer Confused I said I don't smoke, but can send her the details of my old housemate. She kept being really eager asking if the girl would be coming back and when.

I'm confused by a couple of things

  1. I'm friendly with my neighbours, but not especially close. Is it a bit weird that she has asked me to put her in touch with a dealer.
  2. Is weed that hard to source in a big city?
  3. She told me that my housemate knows her under a different name. My housemate told me when she first moved in that she has a different name to the one I know her as. Her post etc. all comes under the name I know her as. I was curious about her job, but she doesn't have a LinkedIn profile. They barely ever go out as far as I can tell.

AIBU to think this is all quite odd?

Farida, is that you?

GlassBoxSpectacular · 04/05/2021 23:37

This thread is the best thing that has happened to me today Smile

GlassBoxSpectacular · 04/05/2021 23:38

@InThisMultiverse

Did you write the last episode of Line of Duty?
Oh please. The OP’s posts make FAR more sense than that! Grin
ButterflyTonight · 04/05/2021 23:41

@ShopoholicIn

Are they Mr. And Mrs. Smith by any chance?

Lalliella · 05/05/2021 00:17

She’s probably in the police and want to entrap your housemate’s dealer. Tell HM not to smoke weed at yours again. Play innocent to neighbour and ask her what she’s in about.

Lalliella · 05/05/2021 00:18

*on about

BabelGiraffe · 05/05/2021 01:43

@HollaHolla

Is your neighbour actually Kate Fleming from Line of Duty? She always changes her name when undercover.
Errrrr everyone changes their name when they're undercover, otherwise they are not undercover. Confused
SmileyClare · 05/05/2021 07:43

Did you write the last episode of Line of Duty?

Haha brilliant. Grin

Op clearly you should have replied with....

..No comment.

Former Intelligence officers don't go around telling people they are former intelligence officers. Putting "worked at MI6 2008-2015" on Facebook doesn't make it true. A real former spy would tell you he was a civil servant.

The rest of it... yeah. Certainly a lot of odd going on and I don't think it's just the neighbours tbh.

saraclara · 05/05/2021 08:20

Intelligence officer doesn't mean spy in most cases, and for most there's absolutely no reason why people shouldn't know what they did (or even while they're doing it). Various agencies like the police, employ intelligence officers, as will as places like GCHQ. It's information gathering most of the time, often sat at a computer, not jumping out of helicopters.

I have two friends who were intelligence officers and who are open about it (though they don't say much about the detail)

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 05/05/2021 08:50

Mother of god.

Therealjudgejudy · 05/05/2021 09:04

Bahahaha...

HelpMeh · 05/05/2021 09:14

If you were my friend I'd be really pissed off that you were willing to give my details out to random people wanting to score drugs.

Aweebawbee · 05/05/2021 09:30

@SmileyClare

That definitely clears up any confusion here

Surely you mean 'definately'?

This thread still here? Surprised the spy next door hasn't found it yet

FuriousCheekyFucker · 05/05/2021 10:14

I believe you OP, I once lived next door to a nice chap called Austin who you would never think of as a successful intelligence officer due to his outlandish dress sense, union jack painted Jaguar and bad teeth.

Takes all sorts, hiding in plain sight they say.

taps nose

DenisetheMenace · 05/05/2021 10:18

No, needs a rewrite Grin

h4ppy · 05/05/2021 10:49

@Sparklesocks

Sorry what? This feels like someone started writing a spy story then got distracted after smoking a joint halfway through.
This 100%
Daphnise · 05/05/2021 11:11

The whole post seems to have been written by someone under the influence of either drugs or alcohol, and is hilarious.

I don't believe a word of it though.

Regularsizedrudy · 05/05/2021 11:32

Can you write that again but make it make sense

Postern · 05/05/2021 12:01

What I want to know is how the Successful Former Intelligence Officer (or his partner?) knew your old housemate was smoking weed. Were you outdoors, or was whatever she was smoking so penetrating they could smell it next door even though you were indoors? Might want to watch that.

minniemomo · 05/05/2021 12:34

Trying out a novel?

Any successful intelligence officer would not be letting their next door neighbour know their career (and yes I actually know one, friend of my DD's and whilst it's not a secret he works for gchq, his job is classified and he is to tell casual acquaintances hes a civil servant, only those who are within his closer circle know more, I only know because I helped him out moving to Cheltenham (and I'm vetted for another reason).

As for availability of weed, no idea where you buy it, not that I want any.
