To think that Conservatives don't actually care about 'red wall' voters beyond getting their vote

But people who live there and are going to be voting Conservative obviously do feel that they are the best people to represent them. Very interested to hear from people who live in red wall areas. AIBU?

YABU = Conservatives actually do care about these people now

YANBU = Conservatives just trying to get the votes and seats

Oh no Flump your post made me do some digging, I honestly now think I might not vote at all, what an absolute farce current politics is.

sunshinesontv · 04/05/2021 20:56

I find it hard to believe that any party genuinely cares about the electorate beyond winning enough seats to push through their policies, which they may genuinely believe are what's best for the country as a whole.

My family live in a red wall area - everyone they know voted conservative for the first time because they hated Jeremy Corbyn.

Tuesdaysintheazores · 04/05/2021 21:02

and there seems to be less attachment to Thatcherism and neoliberalism among the Conservatives. Interesting but I've seen no evidence of that, to me it seems they are heading back to the bad old days

It's not at all clear that Labour really rejects the globalist consensus
Not sure what this means tbh

Nothing is worse than hypocrisy and when you expect certain behaviour and people let you down you often have a bit of a backlash. This is just my own little no data theory with zero back up.

Tuesdaysintheazores · 04/05/2021 21:03

I get that but I wonder what's keeping them going back now that Corbyn is gone I suppose, and having seen a bit of what the Conservatives are like. Do you think they will be permanently Conservative now going forwards? Maybe making that big change means people are more likely to stick with it.

I think most working class people are conservative with a small “c” by inclination.

I don't think Labour have changed their policies that much since Corbyn went though. Momentum still have a large voice and they are still ramming identity politics down peoples throats on social media.
Candidates like this don't help www.herefordtimes.com/news/19238503.hereford-labour-councillor-candidates-tiktok-video-goes-viral/

My family would never vote for someone like that.

Tuesdaysintheazores · 04/05/2021 21:14

That's interesting ofwarren yes quite eccentric! I'd not seen that

My Grandad was a miner. He wouldn't vote for this Labour party.
They don't represent working class people and they certainly don't represent women. Sadly I will be voting anything other than Labour to keep them out

Best vote Tory then. They were famous for looking after miners, and the current Tory leader really has a lot of respect for women and well know for his working class roots. 🙄 .

ofwarren · 04/05/2021 21:22

It's interesting because a lot of the people I hear from who voted Tory last time are actually slating Johnson and the handling of the pandemic. Not one has said they would vote Labour instead though. I think they will probably vote Tory, Reclaim if they are standing in their area or abstain.
They just aren't seen as the party of the working classes among people that I know.

deliciouschilli · 04/05/2021 21:23

stoneofdestiny the Labour party has no respect for women, infact "Women" don't exist in this Labour party...ask Lisa Nandy.
I won't be voting Tory or Labour.

Absolute bollocks.
allycat4 · 04/05/2021 21:42

@stoneofdestiny eye rolling at a PP who explains her Grandad's position pretty much sums up today's Labour Party.

Mumbot345635 · 04/05/2021 21:49

Really don’t get why people don’t vote Lib Dem or independent- there are other options than only Tory or labour!

Lib Dem are just as bad as Labour. Identity politics and don't know what a woman is.
Mumbot345635 · 04/05/2021 21:53

Well the conservatives don’t either but they know how to screw women over!

OhWhyNot · 04/05/2021 21:54

Better get up there and inform these poor wretched uneducated souls tell the men down the pubs who are sipping their ale with whippets by their side and the women who are scrubbing their doorsteps whatever the weather that you know what’s better for them regardless of their experience

BeefSupreme · 04/05/2021 21:57

Why would a politician give a shit about their voters? What kind of mad idea is that?

Flumpaphone · 04/05/2021 22:05

@AfternoonToffee if you are where I think you are, this site is an interesting read www.teesvalleymonitor.com/

TulipsInAJug · 04/05/2021 22:13

You're right, but the same can be said for Labour.

TeacupDrama · 04/05/2021 22:15

You can'tget anyone fto vote for you ifyou tellthem they are racist bigoted or thick or stupid or you don't know what's good for you. People think the leaders of the labour party and some members are sneering at them, nobody likes being sneered at, someone else says I hear your concerns about imitation, I appreciated your view on brexit, I am sure you know what would help you best and things will get better this will win votes people want positive messages. THERE WAS

there was a long thread a few days ago about this and why labour wasn't making headwayalotofinteresting comments by people who wanted labour to make headway can't do a link for this device but maybe someone could.

justsaymaybe · 04/05/2021 22:24

I don't believe any political party particularly cares about much beyond gaining power. Some will do good things with it and some will do bad things with it, most will do both.

Labour has driven people away rather than people suddenly becoming Conservative. I believe it's mostly a protest vote. Labour are way too interested in identity politics. Branding people as racist and transphobic without actually listening to what people are saying.

Several Labour candidates said they literally didn't want votes from gender critical people who don't believe transwomen are women. So why would I vote for them?

That sort of thing is why Labour is not winning.

I've voted Labour in every election, apart from the last one where I just didn't bother as both sides were equally rubbish in different ways, but they won't be getting my vote again until they stop bending towards activists on Twitter.

ceilingsand · 04/05/2021 22:29

YANBU.

AfternoonToffee · 04/05/2021 22:36

Thanks Flump

Big mess though isn't it. (Where I work is different to where I live, hence some of my other posts)

Overitallnow · 04/05/2021 22:40

I'm voting for Niko Omilama for London Mayor. I read his manifesto, quite like it - tongue in cheek.
