Just seen Billie Eilish report on news. What a load of bollocks...

Honestly it must he a total head nip being young these days. 19 yr olds telling us not to body shame then appearing in vogue in a corset. But said 19 yr old being an expert in telling us how to feel, and of course that stupid trendy word 'empowerment ' used as much as possible. Maybe it was the same in my day, but then social media wasnt about to give eedgits a platform to be an expert on everything. Pop stars always got too much attention, but now with sm it must be increased tenfold.
Thank fuck I'm old and middle aged.

@AccidentallyOnPurpose I agree with you even on the socks and sandals (which are for some reason way too common in my native land😳)

Your conclusion is sound

TatianaBis · 03/05/2021 18:40

It's very disappointing to read so many comments implying that if a sexually abused child prefers wearing baggy clothes that cover and hide her entire body, that she's never allowed to wear anything different even once she's an adult: never allowed to grow. Never allowed to change. Never allowed to try to develop a more positive relationship with her body.

I wonder which thread you’re reading because I haven’t seen a single post suggesting anything of the sort.

It’s hardly baggy tracksuits or 50s corsets is it? Fairly sure there’s a wide range of other clothing options.

TatianaBis · 03/05/2021 18:43

As misguided as it is (and definitely encouraged by the industry) I wonder if it was purposefully "big" so once it's done, people rant and rave and comment and whatever, it will eventually die down and her being in a tank top or a bikini won't cause such a fuss anymore. So she can wear what she wants, when she wants and not only "dress up" in the privacy of her own home.

So in order for a young woman to wear normal clothes without a fuss she has to dress up as a hooker first?

There will always be a fuss. Whatever she wears. The media is obsessed by young women’s bodies.

Royalbloo · 03/05/2021 18:46

Can't we just leave her alone? This is nonsense.

TrentonFulch · 03/05/2021 18:51

The problem seems to be that a woman (BE) is behaving in a way that the OP doesn't like or agree with, or would do herself, and that is A Very Bad Thing and the woman should feel Very Bad for not experiencing the world in the exact same way that the OP does.

Also, I was pursued by a 37 year old when i was 16-17 and no one gave a shit, 30-odd years ago. Life happens differently to different people. I'm glad it didn't happen to those who say it never happened at all.

Two sides of the same shitty coin. Wear more, wear less.

Nasty.

forestsmurf · 03/05/2021 18:57

@TiredSloth

Isn’t she trying to say that women should be able to wear what they want without fear of people judging and body shaming them? Whether that be a tracksuit or a corset?
This. Isnt she just saying "I get judged for wearing baggy clothes and will be judged for wearing a corset but it shouldn't that way." She looks great both ways and I think a great role model.

This thread, obviously, where people have talked about what she should be wearing as a role model.

It shouldn't matter what she wears for that reason. That isn't her job.

No , of course she doesn't. But a 19 yo , with her background won't think the same way as you and me. Or see what's behind the cheers of empowerment.

In fact 19 (17 actually)yo me did exactly what she did after years of wearing baggy clothes ,hiding, pretending I'm one of the boys, not a sexual being , hoping I'll be protected. The abuse(including sexual) still happened, the name calling, the body shaming, the comments, the blaming.

So I thought fuck it, might as well wear what I like , put my breasts on show ,live and dress for me (I know,I know). Of course my choices were massively influenced by what was considered beautiful, sexy and what I was told I should NOT wear because I was too fat for it, or gave the wrong impression, or it would make me a slut, or it would be fault if I was attacked (again). I thought I was getting back control. Just as deluded as hiding in baggy clothes was. Neither was healthy or good for me. Or for any young woman/teen.

Nowadays, I'm in trainers, leggings and knee length tops. Took me years to find my way and "style" and decide what I'm actually happy with. The difference? I wasn't in the public eye, having to justify every decision. There was no big industry waiting to jump on the opportunity and cash in on it. I had the advantage of time and space to grow up and know better.

HotSauceCommittee · 03/05/2021 19:10

I haven't read the whole thread, but the girl is right: no need for body shaming. She can wear what she likes and if she says stuff that doesn't sit well with all of us, let us be protective of her online. We can't do much about the creeps, but we are women and the best feminism is about loving other women. She is young. She is talented and she should only just be "emerging" but her talent has put her under an often toxic spotlight.
Let's look after our own.

Maybe show some basic respect to all the other posters by reading the thread before posting? Just a suggestion.

NoraBattysCurlers · 03/05/2021 20:31

OP started a thread highly critical of a 19 year-old woman.

OP did not started a thread highly critical of the clothing. If the OP criticised the clothes, she may have a point. But no, OP started a thread highly critical of the young woman.

What a downright nasty OP.

TheHoneyBadger · 03/05/2021 20:32

“I’m gonna be a woman. I wanna show my body," she said

She believes being a woman and showing your body are synonymous. As if somehow adulthood is marked by an underwear shot.

It's sad that this is what young girls may think and hear. Don't be a child, get your tits out, it's being a grown up and empowered.

Womanhood is somewhat bigger than objectifying yourself for the male gaze.

TheHoneyBadger · 03/05/2021 20:34

OP was criticising a phenomena that is wide spread with young female popstars and her disappointment that someone who had seemed resilient enough to resist it had gone down the same road.

That's not attacking the woman but the state of the industry and society to a degree.

MrsIsobelCrawley · 03/05/2021 20:37

TheHoneyBadger, you either have difficulties in comprehension or you need to re-read the OP.

remember being 19 and thinking i knew it all, i was probably a pain in the arse but at least i didnt have a huge sm platform to spout my crap from....

MrsIsobelCrawley, thats true, madonna was probably the same. Both full of shit really.

Nope, no criticism of her at all.Hmm

InTheMiddle23 · 03/05/2021 20:49

There are plenty of other styles she could've chosen.

MrsIsobelCrawley · 03/05/2021 20:49

@AccidentallyOnPurpose, you choose to kick the woman.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 03/05/2021 20:51

Those are all OP's comments not mine.

MintyMabel · 03/05/2021 21:10

What year was that? I was a teenager when Bill Wyman went out with 15/4 year old Mandy Smith. A French politician was dating a 13 year old. Then we had Chris Evans, in his 30's chasing 16 year old Billie Piper.

Those were exceptions rather than the rule. I grew up in a similar era and no, it was not acceptable for older men to be dating teenagers.

19thNamechange · 03/05/2021 21:24

She should obviously be able to wear whatever she likes. I just object to her comments being on the news. I understand some girls see her as a role model, but it gives her views more importance if they are on a main news programme. She is a singer and a very young woman, she's got no expertise in this area, just her own personal experiences. Shouldn't have her comments all over the news imho.

stackemhigh · 03/05/2021 21:30

A French politician was dating a 13 year old.

Who was that? Shock
