Honestly it must he a total head nip being young these days. 19 yr olds telling us not to body shame then appearing in vogue in a corset. But said 19 yr old being an expert in telling us how to feel, and of course that stupid trendy word 'empowerment ' used as much as possible. Maybe it was the same in my day, but then social media wasnt about to give eedgits a platform to be an expert on everything. Pop stars always got too much attention, but now with sm it must be increased tenfold.
Thank fuck I'm old and middle aged.

She's allowed to wear what she wants.

It's backward to say she should stay covered up if she opposes body shaming - surely it's worse to have to be covered up to avoid it.

Liveonyournerves · 03/05/2021 11:50

Totally disagree with you there. We weren't fair game in my day, older men coming onto young girls were sent packing then, same as now.

That's nonsense, sorry but it really is.

HamFlaps · 03/05/2021 11:52

What is the Billie Eilish report on the news?

I don’t care how people dress, what they look like etc, but what I hate is when they have plastic surgery and doctor their pictures and lie. Then often complain about being bullied over their looks. If you want to have surgery and doctor your pictures then okay, but be honest, because when you’re not honest you are promoting unrealistic expectations on to young girls.

And of course no one forces you to be a role model, but you can’t say that Little Mix aren’t aware that a majority of their fan base is 13 year old girls. Jesu has talked openly about the impact on her mental health, but what about the impact on their fans mental health because of what they do to fake their own looks? It’s a vicious cycle and I’m glad I’m too old to be a part of it. I feel sorry for young girls these days as whilst there has always been a pressure, the easy access to surgery and photoshop is making it tenfold.

If Billie wants to dress however she likes then good for her. As long as she is honest about it, who gives a toss.

OwlBeThere · 03/05/2021 11:52

@ssd well ok, but it did happen. All the time. All throughout history in fact.

Christmasbird · 03/05/2021 11:52

I actually saw this coming. Knew she wouldn't be allowed to stay in baggy clothes and that a big reveal was coming at some point. she is still very young and it does bother me because she doesnt look comfortable

MrsIsobelCrawley · 03/05/2021 11:52

@ssd

Yep, it must be difficult having teenage girls now, the role models always end up in a corset somehow or other...
Unlike back in the day when we had Madonna.
MrsIsobelCrawley · 03/05/2021 11:53

Is it the same poster always who starts these threads that are full of nonsense?

OwlBeThere · 03/05/2021 11:54

@noblegiraffe

It's a bit depressing that 'choosing to wear what I want' for so many young women appears to be 'choosing to pose in underwear'.

It's not female empowerment if what you are doing is exactly what men would like to see, even if you say it's your choice.

Yes it is. If she chose to wear it then it’s about what she wants. Billie has shown many times on many covers that she is her and wears what she wants.
BilboBercow · 03/05/2021 11:56

At 13 a girl in my school had an 18 year old boyfriend. At 17 I had a 27 year old boyfriend. Teenage girls have always been a target for older men.
There's absolutely no hypocrisy wit Billie Eillish telling people not to bodyshame and appearing in Vogue in a corset. All of the pictures are very tasteful and she's almost completely covered up. She talks about how she's targeted and criticises when she covers up but also when she's not, for example recently when photographed wearing cycling shorts and a baggy tshirt.
She's completely correct given two different people have chosen to tart threads talking about what a 19 year old should be wearing.

Moondust001 · 03/05/2021 11:56

My first thought was "Who?" - still don't know the answer to that, or care to find out.

My second was "Who cares about their opinion on anything? "

My third was "Perhaps if the OP had nothing better to do than read / listen to an opinion by someone whose opinion they don't really care about, then post their complaint on a social media whilst bemoaning the invasive influence of socisl media, they need a better hobby."

the80sweregreat · 03/05/2021 11:59

It's disappointing she has given in the media moguls behind her image and not kept the old one. I was impressed with her lack of the corset photos and the like , then she goes and does it anyway.
No wonder so many young people are depressed and unhappy when their role models just end up going against their original views of ' being yourself' and embracing the more natural looks. I thought she was a breath of fresh air but clearly not.

Branleuse · 03/05/2021 11:59

shes hardly lecturing people. Shes likely been asked repeatedly on her reasons for covering up so much. Its still up to her. That vogue cover would be considered quite modest for a lot of popstars

ssd · 03/05/2021 12:00

@MrsIsobelCrawley, thats true, madonna was probably the same. Both full of shit really.

And yet you came to post about it.

Lots of young people care what she thinks, she’s probably the biggest pop star on the planet right now so teens and the like will care.

noblegiraffe · 03/05/2021 12:04

Owl I completely disagree. People can be groomed by society into thinking and doing certain things and believing that it's their idea.

If you compare 'patriarchy'' and 'female empowerment' and the results look exactly the same, then you have to think critically about what is really going on.

I can't remember which film it was that says something like 'women lost when we managed to persuade them that pole dancing was good exercise'.

It's even more disappointing that an advocate of 'wear what you want, when you want' is criticised for doing exactly that. She told millions of young girls it was ok to wear baggy clothes and cover up when you want to. The message doesnt restrict her to never wearing sexier clothes if she happens to feel like it!

She sends a message about not policing what people wear then gets policed herself. Sad really. You really think she was going to be wearing oversized Gucci and have green hair at 45 just out of principle?

ForwardRanger · 03/05/2021 12:06

I don't think she is at all hypocritical, I find her refreshingly honest and sincere.

Your post is deeply misogynistic and ageist and just really awful. BE is an extraordinarily talented young woman and deserves to be celebrated. What is this obsession with tearing apart amazing talent? It is sick

littlepattilou · 03/05/2021 12:06

@ssd YABU. I can't see that Billie has done anything wrong. Confused

Nightbear · 03/05/2021 12:07

As someone has already said, she was 13 when she started out her career. The clothes she wore allowed her to opt out of having her appearance dissected, criticised and sexualised on a global scale - unfortunately there’s no avoiding that shit in real life for teenage girls.

How many of us have had sexualised comments shouted at us by grown men when walking home in school uniform? Had comments about our bodies from boys in school? Walked around with hunched shoulders and books held up to our chest to try and avoid the unwanted attention? At least some of us are old enough that we didn’t have to deal with the pressures of social media - I really don’t envy teenagers growing up now. Can you imagine the sheer volume of crap that she would have had to face as a famous teenager? So she covered up and made that a recognisable style. Not because she was allergic to tailoring or because she loved to wear baggy stuff all the time - just to be able to avoid the bullshit about her weight, her body shape, her cup size etc

She’s now 19, an adult, and more able to deal with the crap.

As for ’We weren't fair game in my day, older men coming onto young girls were sent packing then, same as now.’

My mother taught alongside men who dated their 16 year old pupils. Several of them married former pupils, having started the relationships while the girls were pupils. So many of my friends were going out with men of 20+ when they were 15 or 16. Just look at the grooming scandals in places like Rochdale and Rotherham and the (lack of) action by the police for years. The girls weren’t seen as victims.

Blondiney · 03/05/2021 12:07

I miss the days of being a teenager and having all the answers. Here I am now hurtling towards my 50, realising that I actually know less with each passing year.

Thehawki · 03/05/2021 12:08

So what? She doesn’t want creeps taking photos of her on the street, but she’s okay with a photo shoot that she’s fully involved in. It’s not a hard concept to grasp. She didn’t consent to the photos of her on the street so it upset her. She likes these photos of her in vogue, she’s allowed to celebrate her body in whatever way she see fit. When she wants to be covered she will be, when she wants to undress she’s entitled to. People have different opinions on their own body day to day, why should Billie be any different?

Billie Eilish can do whatever the fuck she wants and I will still adore her. 😍

Poor girl has grown up in a fishtank and now all the hormones are flooding in.

What a load of old tosh. GIRLS, as young as 13 or 14, have ALWAYS been targeted by pervy older men. To say it never happened 'back in the day,' is farcical to the extreme!
