What do you think of people getting ready on the train in the mornings?

I moved to London a few years ago from a small town and never had seen something like that before. Full make up and hair done in the train/underground. I just wonder what people think about it? I would say most of you probably don't mind Hmm

I have seen it many times and always thought it is not something I could do, far too self conscious. I can’t see any reason why I would mind someone else doing it though.

Sunny1112 · 01/05/2021 17:33

Doesn’t bother me I just think get up earlier 😂

SappysCurry · 01/05/2021 17:36

I’m too self conscious as well, but it’s a productive way to pass the journey

MyOctopusFeature · 01/05/2021 17:36

It would worry me if it was the driver and we were in motion, otherwise all OK.

I have seen a bus driver shaving while driving and another one also reading the newspaper spread across his steering wheel with a bus load of kids.

Whatsissname · 01/05/2021 17:36

I am slightly in aww of the skill of it. I have enough trouble making myself look presentable in a totally stationary bathroom Grin

Laiste · 01/05/2021 17:37

Good use of the time IMO.

EntreMummy · 01/05/2021 17:38

Pretty standard for Londoners.

Back in the day (pre pandemic and when I used to commute) I would often do part of my face on the tube.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 01/05/2021 17:39

Depends: mascara = fine, foundation = rank!

ChrissyPlummer · 01/05/2021 17:39

I just think “get up earlier”. On my early shifts, I get up before 4:30 and still manage to do hair/makeup at home. It’s like people who are eating on the way out of the house. How long does it take to toast and butter some bread and eat it?

eurochick · 01/05/2021 17:41

I did it when I had a longish commute and a baby. I always managed to leave the house ready for the day before the baby!

I used to do my makeup on the train as it was a good time saver! Not since the pandemic though as it’s too fiddly with a mask on.

Snoozer11 · 01/05/2021 17:42

I always look away when someone is applying mascara in case they bus driver breaks and they end up losing an eye.

AnUnoriginalUsername · 01/05/2021 17:43

So long as you're not spraying things or clipping things I don't care.

AlmostSummer21 · 01/05/2021 17:44

It doesn't bother me, but I think it's a bit 'look at meeeeee'

I also find it difficult not to watch, but feel it's intrusive so I try not to, but that takes effort so I kind of resent that.

Your OP feels very judgey. Not of the person doing it, but if people that don't mind others doing it.

ForThePurposeOfTheTape · 01/05/2021 17:45

As long as they don't spray or spill stuff on the person next to them I don't care. I mean stuff like hairspray but obviously don't want sneezing or coughing either.

TheFutureDoesntWork · 01/05/2021 17:48

It's how I learned to do contouring. 👍 Better than YouTube.

alwaySun · 01/05/2021 17:48

It doesn't really bother me at all and it's definitely a time saver. I couldn't do though but have eaten sometimes coming back from work back in the days after a late shift which some people might find gross.

OP posts:
Onairjunkie · 01/05/2021 17:48

I used to train into town regularly for work (driven bow due to the ‘rona) and often I’d see the same woman at the station. I used to avoid her because, beautifully put together as she was, she would eat a full breakfast (cereal, some sort of biscuit thing, coffee which she slurped, banana which she slurped) each time and she ate like a fucking pig. No offence intended to pigs, they’re wonderful. Twice I got caught near her. She would crunch and trough with her mouth wide open the whole way up to London. It used to turn my stomach.

Contactlesslenses · 01/05/2021 17:49

I find it really annoying, if I am sat next to the make up applier.

All the fidgeting, elbows in my side, powder landing on me, the clicking of the make up packaging.

When I commuted in I wanted 40 mins to relax, read a book and get ready for my days work, not be sat next to someone fidgeting and doing what they should do in the privacy of their bedroom.

deliciousdevilwoman · 01/05/2021 17:49

I used to do it often on my commute to work when I lived in London. Make up only. Not hair. And have breakfast on the train (nothing smelly!) Usually a coffee and pastry. Good use of the time.

ComDummings · 01/05/2021 17:50

Commute time is dead time so why not use it. Although once on the train a guy, who was dressed very smartly, took off his shoes and socks and started clipping his toe nails. That was a step too far...

ColonelPine · 01/05/2021 17:51

I think it’s fine. If you spend 2+ hours a day commuting you’re entitled to try and make productive use of some of that time.

DinoHat · 01/05/2021 17:51

I used to. I was up at 5am, good way to utilise the time - rather than spend 20mins staring out the window.

EarringsandLipstick · 01/05/2021 17:51

I often did it. It was about maximising time for me as a single working parent, trying to get kids in one direction & me in the other for school & work. And also being a bit crap with time

But genuinely I had an insane schedule. My kids are really busy, my job is too, I've no support & somehow always crap childcare. So often in the morning I was trying to do a bit of housework, washes on, batch of ironing, cook the evening meal, as evenings were tied up with kids' sports.

My train was relatively quiet, table in front me, not lashing on make up in a packed train.

But still, once or twice, there was a jolt, make up went everywhere & I felt mortified. It didn't spill on anyone but they'd be trying to retrieve it from under seats & so on.

And then I'd think - I need a new plan.

Unlikely to happen again due to changes post-Covid.
