What do you think of people getting ready on the train in the mornings?

I moved to London a few years ago from a small town and never had seen something like that before. Full make up and hair done in the train/underground. I just wonder what people think about it? I would say most of you probably don't mind Hmm

It's much better than having someone sat opposite you eating a big fat burger King, stinking the carriage out.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 02/05/2021 11:25

It doesn't bother me although I wouldn't do it myself. I did watch someone transform herself for the majority of a 2 hour train journey once. Was very glad she did it in her seat and not occupy the toilet for the duration.

But nail varnish application is anti social because it smells and that is definitely one for your own space.

ddl1 · 02/05/2021 11:46

I find it very attention seeking

I would say quite the opposite: that people who do it tend to be either unusually oblivious to the fact that others may be looking at them, or just don't care.

PenfoldPenny · 02/05/2021 11:48

As an occasional thing, fine. On a regular basis I think its odd tbh. And weird for people sitting nearby. But Im very impressed that anyone can put make up on whilst on a train/bus. I cant do it (even vaguely) even at home!

maddening · 02/05/2021 11:51

Good use of dead time imo

Sbk28 · 02/05/2021 11:57

Why would I care what other people do when it doesn't affect me in the slightest?

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 02/05/2021 12:01

I don't like it.

I just see it as lazy - being so unable to just get up 10 mins earlier, that you are willing to sit rubbing cream on your cheeks etc on a busy train. Personal grooming etc should be done at home or in a bathroom imho.

SmileyClare · 02/05/2021 12:02

I find it very entertaining and informative too and have to try really hard not to gawp at them in fascination.

However, I feel too self conscious to do it myself, worried that people are looking at me thinking Well she's applying that all wrong and using far too much bronzer. And look at that spot on her cheek, she's done a terrible bodge trying to conceal it. Grin

Depends what time your train is and how far away the station is. I was regularly on a 6am train and needed to be up at 5 on those days. Still wouldn't do my makeup on a train tho

RandomDent · 02/05/2021 12:09

I’m imagining attempting to stick on my lashes on a rocking train 😂

jay55 · 02/05/2021 12:10

I hate it. I hate the smells. I hate the flecks of foundation and powder flying about and landing on people. I hate the person with a seat leaning forward into an already crowded carriage.

It's a real upside to masks to not see it any more.

LostBlanket · 02/05/2021 12:12

I used to because my train journey was an hour on a half empty train. I used to sit on my own on a two seater and do my make up. It's the best way to kill some time with my morning coffee and make up bagGrin

TheKeatingFive · 02/05/2021 12:12

Why make moral judgements about people maximising their sleep time? I don’t understand this. Everything that we hear about modern life suggests we don’t get enough sleep.

shivawn · 02/05/2021 12:14

Why not? I do mine in the car on the way to work (I'm not driving).

Anyone bothered by someone on the train putting on some makeup would probably be a lot happier if they could chill out in general.

SweatyAmy · 02/05/2021 12:15

In normal times, not now as WFH, I do my primer, foundation, concealer, blusher and highlighter followed by setting spray at home. I then do my eyeshadow on the train and eyeliner and mascara when I get to the office.

I have seen people apply a full face of make up on the train. It doesn't bother me, it saves time. Lots of women do it and some men too.

I don't do any liquid products myself on the train in case of spillage. I once sat opposite a lady painting her nails on a jolty tube train and was amazed she didn't spill any or go wrong!

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 02/05/2021 12:16

Why make moral judgements about people maximising their sleep time?

Because you can maximise your sleep time by going to bed earlier, without sharing private/intimate activities that other people don't want to be exposed to. As a pp said there are always flecks of powder and smudges of stuff that end up on seats and tables. I've sat near women who spray themselves liberally with a very sweet perfume, with the 50% or so that doesn't land on their own body choking everyone else in the carriage. Yuck.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 02/05/2021 12:17

Ps I wouldnt actually judge someone sleeping on the train as it doesn't impact the people around them, unless they are snoring etc.

emilyfrost · 02/05/2021 12:17

I think they don’t know how to appropriately manage their time.

Macaronirabbit · 02/05/2021 12:18

I'm impressed at the make up appliers, I'm sure I'd end up with lipstick over my cheek and poke myself in the eye with mascara! I dont find it particularly disgusting or gross.
However I did find it unpleasant to be sat on the train next to a bloke chomping his way through a trough enormous (china) bowl of cereal and then proceeded to use a selection of teepee brushes to floss his teeth!!

Lockheart · 02/05/2021 12:19

I think it's antisocial to turn a public train carriage into your bathroom, which is what you're doing when you start performing your morning ablutions there.

I class it in the same league as brushing your hair or filing your nails, putting on scent or nail polish, listening to music either without headphones or with headphones that leak the noise to the rest of the carriage, or eating particularly loud or strong smelling foods.

Do any of the above cause me harm? No. But that doesn't mean they're not thoughtless, inconsiderate, or antisocial.

Anonmousse · 02/05/2021 12:23

I find people who feel obliged to have very loud (and sometimes private, or inappropriate) phone conversations much more annoying that someone applying make up.

SmileyClare · 02/05/2021 12:23

If you consider a mum of 2 young children who both wake very early after a disrupted night, and need attention, need to be dressed, fed and ready for nursery, then it's unlikely that mum has time to sit alone for 20 minutes doing make up.

That's one example of someone who isn't "lazy" but doesn't have free alone time until they're commuting.

therocinante · 02/05/2021 12:24

@thinkfast

I'm a Londoner so have seen this often and find this public preening incredibly bad manners. I don't want to be squashed in a tube with someone doing what ought to be part of their morning bathroom routine. It's horrible.
But why is it horrible, though? It's not 'private', like going to the toilet. Why should it be done at home?
timegoesbysoslowly · 02/05/2021 12:24

I never would as to self conscious but it's also about common curtsy for your fellow passengers. I would find it entertaining as like people watching and as long as it is not upsetting others what the harm.

It's more annoying when someone has music blaring out, phone calls on loud speaker, eating smelly food, loud conversations.

I astonished reading some off the things people have witnessed. Toe nail cutting, painting nails and I'd be too scared to say anything, sit there seething.

TheKeatingFive · 02/05/2021 12:26

It’s more than possible to do it without making a mess. And in that case, I don’t get the angst. I don’t see applying lipstick as ‘intimate’ myself.
