What do you think of people getting ready on the train in the mornings?

I moved to London a few years ago from a small town and never had seen something like that before. Full make up and hair done in the train/underground. I just wonder what people think about it? I would say most of you probably don't mind Hmm

Someone doing makeup wouldn't really bother me. The woman I saw flossing her teeth on the train once was a bit much though

Weatherwax · 01/05/2021 18:54

As long as its not smelly (hairspray etc) it's fine. A woman did this on my old commute to London. I was in awe of her eyeliner skills whilst on a moving train. Better than I can do standing still in a brightly lit bathroom!

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 01/05/2021 18:58

Not bothered, I quite enjoy watching people put their makeup on.

Backupthebus · 01/05/2021 18:59

I’m always intrigued when women start applying makeup and end up watching in fascination, how they don’t smear it everywhere whilst the train jostles about is brilliant. I don’t like seeing liquid foundation applied though as I’ve never seen anyone wipe their dirty made up hands after?

RantyAnty · 01/05/2021 19:21

Doesn't bother me at all. People watching is entertaining.

I've seen one guy brush his teeth on the train before!

Blowingagale · 01/05/2021 19:26

I’m not bothered, but don’t have a long commute now.

It’s so nice to have this thread, parking threads, bridezilla- threads I was so bored with in January 2020. Smile

ThatIsMyPotato · 01/05/2021 19:29

I used to find it a bit ew. But not sure why. I've since reframed my thoughts and figure if it means (mostly) women don't decide to get up earlier to put on make up then they get a bit more sleep and it reduces the gender disparity there. I am still nervous they will poke their eye with the mascara when the bus stops though.

BlusteryLake · 01/05/2021 19:41

I don't mind people doing their make up, but brushing hair and clipping toenails (both of which I have witnessed!) is a bit gross.

LemonRoses · 01/05/2021 19:44

I think it’s inconsiderate if it’s a crowded train. Personally, I think bathroom activities are best kept in the bathroom, but mostly it’s up to them. Hairbrushing isn’t for public places though - dead skin, loose hair, elbowing people just aren’t acceptable.
Spraying anything around is just rude.
That said, I’d rather smell a quick spritz of Jo Malone than someone shovelling in a very pungent meal or leaving smelly banana skins on the table. Eating on trains is rarely pleasant to sit near.

Jumpingintosummer · 01/05/2021 19:46

I quietly judge Blush

asprinklingofsugar · 01/05/2021 19:51

I used to do it on the bus - but not a full face. Just some mascara and lipstick. Occasionally some foundation if I was looking especially pale, but only with my foundation stick so no faffing about with powder or squirting stuff - roll it on, rub it in and job done. If I was doing more I’d at least start it at home, and leave the lipstick till I was nearly at my destination so it hadn’t worn off by the time I got where I was going. (I had a long commute so that may have happened but if it was a short journey I’d have done that at home too)

ElphabaTWitch · 01/05/2021 19:56

I think it’s not necessarily something I would do. BUT... so many people have to work so far away from home with long journeys, it’s just something they can do to a) have Extra time in bed, b) Something that can be done on the train cos they’re running late , c) something to do to pass the time of a long journey.

Chailatteplease · 01/05/2021 19:57

I literally couldn’t care less.

Why would anyone Confused

altforvarmt · 01/05/2021 20:00

Touching up makeup is fine. Applying a full face with fingers just seems gross on public transport. It gives me the heebie jeebies. If someone’s doing it sat next to me, I move.

thinkfast · 01/05/2021 20:02

I'm a Londoner so have seen this often and find this public preening incredibly bad manners. I don't want to be squashed in a tube with someone doing what ought to be part of their morning bathroom routine. It's horrible.

StoneofDestiny · 01/05/2021 20:02

Had to sit next to somebody on a long train journey who was putting on coat after coat of nail varnish - it stunk to high heaven. Seriously anti social.

EnglishRain · 01/05/2021 20:04

I am fascinated with how the women I've seen doing mascara and eye liner in the train can do it so neatly. I struggle in front of a mirror when I'm stationary!

ObsidianRavenMcBovril · 01/05/2021 20:04

@Contactlesslenses

I find it really annoying, if I am sat next to the make up applier.

All the fidgeting, elbows in my side, powder landing on me, the clicking of the make up packaging.

When I commuted in I wanted 40 mins to relax, read a book and get ready for my days work, not be sat next to someone fidgeting and doing what they should do in the privacy of their bedroom.

This... a girl once sat next to me and proceeded to lean over me to plug in her hair straighteners then applied a full face of makeup before straightening her hair. As a pp said it does feel a bit "look at meeeee" 🙄
TheKeatingFive · 01/05/2021 20:13

Why would you care? Much less judge?

VienneseWhirligig · 01/05/2021 20:17

I only do it if I'm in a table seat with nobody else sitting by me. Otherwise I leave it until I get into the office. Pre pandemic I had to leave the house at 5am and was barely awake, definitely not awake enough to put makeup on.

hulahooper2 · 01/05/2021 20:25

I find it very attention seeking , and can’t believe how long it takes some to do their face

miltonj · 01/05/2021 20:25

As long as they're not clipping their nails I don't care.

I once watched two men have a full on fight on a bus because one of them wouldn't stop clipping his nails. It was gross to be fair

Freecuthbert · 01/05/2021 20:27

It doesn't bother me. I've done this a few times on public transport and I don't live in London. Not something I've done on the way to work as I don't wear makeup for that, but when I've travelled across the country by train or coach. I don't like wearing makeup all day as it makes me feel crusty after a while, so if I have to get up at 5am for a 3 hour journey I would rather not wear makeup first thing.

BonnyEm · 01/05/2021 20:30

I've seen a man driving and brushing his teeth 😂

TheKeatingFive · 01/05/2021 20:30

I find it very attention seeking

Why? I just presume they’re short on time.
