As an adult what scares you?

I’m 30, not scared of anything (apart from something happening to my child or myself leaving my child motherless) but any pointy fingered creature, the plague doctor bird mask really terrifies me, I watched a movie once called the poughkeepsie tapes & was so scared I actually threw up! (I was led to believe it was real footage at the time) as an adult what things scare you?

Being a single mother again but wanting another child (isn’t going to happen. Fear of being abandoned is too strong)

Of opening up to someone again.

@SilverOtter

The thought of underwater caves makes me want to vomit.

I remember watching a documentary once, years ago, where they were in a forest and there were what looked like puddles but they were entrances to these underwater cave systems. Have had nightmares about it ever since!

They’re called cenotes and I would love to swim in one. I’m fascinated with diving, adore the water but also have claustrophobia so don’t think I could dive. I’ve seen amazing videos where there’s a distinct line in the water and the bottom layer is almost invisible, crystal clear.

Rats
Mice
Pigeons
Creepy ship wrecks

DarlingWithoutYou · 29/04/2021 21:47

-Vomit. (emetophobia) nothing compares to this fear

-Sinkholes (like a previous PP) I can't get over the worry

-deep water, the sea, piers, airplanes, wasps, things with holes in, heights, rats, soooo many things.

babbaloushka · 29/04/2021 21:47

Getting stuck in an underground hole, like the guy sealed in Nutty Putty cave.

Xtraincome · 29/04/2021 21:51

Men with hoods. I have also found black masks being worn by men with hoods up during pandemic unsettling. I can reason it as it's during the day I see it the most but, I was held at gunpoint when I worked at a Tesco Express years ago and stupidly went back to work 2 weeks later only to be held up again by a different gang. They had theirs faces covered and all you could see was their eyes.

Large animals in deep water. The thought of basking sharks in our waters terrifies me even though they are harmless. Their size and giant mouths are just too scary.

Something happening to my DDs

Icantrememebrtheartist · 29/04/2021 21:52

People! I don’t understand, never have and never will understand how anyone feels they have the right to hit and harm another person. People are capable of such violence it really scares me.

GintyMcGinty · 29/04/2021 21:52

Wasps

Falling from a height

Best stay away from the octonauts in that case...
GabriellaMontez · 29/04/2021 22:04

Breaking down on the motorway.

Holes in butter (made by crumpet holes)

Red peppers that have miniature peppers inside.

What's underneath me in the sea.

Iwouldbecomplex · 29/04/2021 22:16

The dark
The ocean (swimming in it)
Spiders
Caves

d1ver · 29/04/2021 22:20

ET (like vomiting levels of terrified)
Crane flies
The dark
Ghosts
Aliens
Demons
Anything supernatural really
Tsunamis (but not the wave, just the thought of standing on the beach and the water suddenly disappearing)

I used to be terrified of open water so I started learning how to scuba dive and now I'm a scuba instructor! Still don't like swimming in open water without a mask but I would happily spend the rest of my life underwater. The first time I went swimming with a whale shark was one of the best moments of my life. And truly, whales and sharks are way more scared of you than you need to be of them.

BorderlineHappy · 29/04/2021 22:27

Watching Criminal Minds and how easily it is to abduct someone.
Really makes you think.

merryhouse · 29/04/2021 22:30

@HarkAVagrant but - mirrors don't do that, do they?

I don't watch horror films.

I don't feel scared much, though there are a lot of things I consider I need to be cautious about.

However, every time I open a new packet of paracetamol I remember a programme H was watching years ago (possibly Spooks) in which someone died after taking paracetamol which had been laced with something hideous by terrorists. I can't say that my habit of buying painkillers several packs in advance hasn't been influenced by this...

MariposaLilly · 29/04/2021 22:56

Goblins.

Stichintime · 29/04/2021 23:00

War, touching uncooked meat, car accidents.

Winniewonka · 29/04/2021 23:03

Fear of being trapped in a lift. I avoid them at all costs. Fortunately my best friend shares the same phobia. We once went on holiday, stayed on the 11th floor and used the stairs the whole time.
If I absolutely have to use one, I'll only go in if there's someone else in it.

WellLarDeDar · 29/04/2021 23:07

Spiders obviously. But also, of being an old lady alone and not dying for decades and having to live alone without my family or DH gradually deteriorating but not moving on. The loneliness is my biggest fear.

SingingInTheShithouse · 29/04/2021 23:12

Centipedes.

I go cold & panicky if I see one. This is relatively new & I think might stem from sharing a car to the airport with a foot long bitey one running lose. I somehow dealt with that just fine at the time, same as I dealt with stomping through hundreds of giant millepedes littering the paths around my hotel in Kenya.

Yet somehow, years later I fall apart at the sight of a teeny little fairly harmless uk centipede Confused

Ivycrescent · 29/04/2021 23:25

Steep drops. In my nightmares I’m hurtling down mountainsides in a car Shock

But in terms of more ‘horror’ type stuff... people in films who are unnatural /distorted - gaping mouth, weird movements, frozen expressions... uncanny stuff gives me the proper creeps.

ThetaSigma · 29/04/2021 23:28

The spiritual emptiness that comes with the realisation that ultimately this is all pointless and within the blink of an eye I’ll be naught but dust.

StayingHere · 29/04/2021 23:29

Gosh I get scared of more stuff when I get older.
On a light hearted level fairground rides and horror films.
On a larger level I fear my children getting seriously sick or injured, me getting sick and dying before them, I fear having to live in chronic pain.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 29/04/2021 23:57

I have trypophobia. I also hate seeing photos of abandoned water parks. The empty dried out pools and dried out slides all covered in leaves scare the shit out of me.

Ginger89 · 30/04/2021 02:58

This is brilliant to read! I am so curious about the underside of ships fear the more I think about if the more haunting the image/thought is how mad is that!! @SymphonyofShadows tell me more about starring at death 3 times please
