As an adult what scares you?

I’m 30, not scared of anything (apart from something happening to my child or myself leaving my child motherless) but any pointy fingered creature, the plague doctor bird mask really terrifies me, I watched a movie once called the poughkeepsie tapes & was so scared I actually threw up! (I was led to believe it was real footage at the time) as an adult what things scare you?

@SedentaryCat I have a thing about weirs too. I can't explain it.

Mine, apart from the above are the tunnels, pipes, deep water at reservoirs.
Any deep dark water really, like pools or lakes in woods.

Canal locks.
Aquaducts.

Nodding donkeys.
Also those huge concrete pourers you see at building sites, the jointed ones that look like a spiders leg.

This is going to sound crazy but...whales. Especially killer whales with their grins. I think it’s the thought of their huge bodies hidden under water...I am shuddering just typing that. Never met anyone with the same fear though
My dd has this, she says it is how deep they swim, and how huge they are.
DeadButDelicious · 29/04/2021 20:50

I don't like man made things that are considerably bigger than me. Even more so if those things are underwater. Submarines for example can fuck all the way off. Cruise liners, steam trains, water wheels, ships propellers can all go away as well. I'm not keen on large bodies of open water either if I'm honest.

I am irrationally frightened of werewolves. Mostly because I know they aren't real but some primal, superstitious bit of my brain hasn't figured that out yet. They give me the heebie jeebies. Perversely I really enjoy werewolf films, An American Werewolf In London is one of my favourite films for example. Scares the absolute shit out of me though.

DenisetheMenace · 29/04/2021 20:53

My (adult) children, grandchild or husband being hurt or falling seriously ill. Thought of developing dementia and ..... CLOWNS 😱

Squirrelblanket · 29/04/2021 20:54

Falling over in public.

SymphonyofShadows · 29/04/2021 20:56

I don’t like the underside of ships either, what is that?

I’ve stared death in the face three times but each time it was the thought of those I’d be leaving behind that concerned me, not the dying bit.

Wrenna · 29/04/2021 20:59

I watch too many crime shows and I’m afraid I might get raped/killed/kidnapped by some ordinary looking guy, on an ordinary day, doing ordinary things.

FindingMeno · 29/04/2021 21:01

I'm scared of being alone in the dark, of buzzing insects, dental work and swimming in deep dark water.

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 29/04/2021 21:08

Antibiotic resistance.
Some people's misunderstanding of antibiotic resistance as being something effecting individuals personally: "I hardly ever take antibiotics so won't develop resistance", and so fail to take proper care when taking prescribed antibiotics.
There was a drama on R4 during Antibiotic Resistance Awareness Week a few years ago and it scared the living daylights out of me. So many aspects of healthcare that we take for granted today will be unavailable when antibiotics are rendered ineffective.

Clowns scare the shite out of me! Blush

PollyPepper · 29/04/2021 21:10

Does anyone remember that episode of Buffy called The Gentlemen?
They were these HORRIFIC characters who would float down hallways completely silent and take their victims heart out, having first removed their voice and ability to scream. Jesus wept they scare the kidneys out of me.

Being trapped in a really small space, like in a cave or a tunnel. Not being able to stand up because the space is so small terrifies me.

The thought of someone standing in the fields outside my house at night, staring at my house.

ForgedInFire · 29/04/2021 21:16

Long tunnels that go underwater, like the Blackwall tunnel

Rosewood017 · 29/04/2021 21:17

@Moonwatcher1234

Well done, you! Great to face your fears and hope it helped. I imagine doing the same sometimes but think I would faint if I ever spotted one in real life. Already feel shaky when blue planet is on!
Yes! Blue Planet when you see those cameramen suspended in the ocean and a huge whale swimming vertically to the surface. How do these people have no fear?

I do recommend a whale watch. They don't look so intimidating in the vast sea Confused

funinthesun19 · 29/04/2021 21:17

Octopuses. And lots of other sea creatures. Octopuses though.... 😨 They are creepy as fuck on the creepy scale.

Thereoncewasababy · 29/04/2021 21:20

The idea of getting a moth in my ear and it flapping around Shock

BrownEyedGirl80 · 29/04/2021 21:20

Death and the thought of giving birth again

LibbyL92 · 29/04/2021 21:20

The thought of dying, well what happens after I die ect, with my body. The thought of being burned petrifies me.
It often hits me at night and I’ll struggle falling asleep ect. It can last for days and then it goes away and then comes back.

FrancesHaHa · 29/04/2021 21:20

Sharks
Deep water
Tsunamis- I watched a programme once where they mocked up what it would be like if Manhattan experienced a tsunami, scared the life out of me

I'm sure these things get worse as you get older. I used to love heights, now I feel a bit nauseous above about 5 stories

Thereoncewasababy · 29/04/2021 21:20

I love octopuses though I think they are cute and intelligent Smile

FindingMeno · 29/04/2021 21:21

Sharks. I know the odds of a shark attack are very low, but if I don't go in the water where there are sharks, they're cut to zero Smile

BrownEyedGirl80 · 29/04/2021 21:22

And toads.Saw one up close and it had red eyes ffs

ViciousJackdaw · 29/04/2021 21:24

Pylons. I can only assume it's thanks to watching Play Safe as a child.

OhWhyNot · 29/04/2021 21:24

People dressing up as foxes or vice versa

I can’t watch Fantastic Mr Fox

As for those fox tail butt plugs wtf is wrong with people

SilverOtter · 29/04/2021 21:27

The thought of underwater caves makes me want to vomit.

I remember watching a documentary once, years ago, where they were in a forest and there were what looked like puddles but they were entrances to these underwater cave systems. Have had nightmares about it ever since!
