To be shocked at what’s just happened on the school run

So today after picking DCs up from school/nursery a car that was parked up close behind my car put their car into accelerate instead of reverse and ended up pinning me between my rear bumper and their front bumper whilst I was putting bags etc in the boot.

Mum in question did not realise one of my legs was taking the brunt of this until I was shouting to tell her to reverse.
She did apologise at the time, but didn’t get out of the car to ask if I was ok or anything like that!

I’ve got home now and my knee already is swollen and starting to bruise.. I’m also thinking this could have been a much worse accident if this was DS stood in between the car.

Fortunately a parent came over to check if I was ok and he did catch the incident on his dash cam.
So would you put this down as an unfortunate accident or do anything about it? I’m not even sure who or if I would report it too.

@dottiedaisee

Do you think the driver actually realised that she had injured you? Am not making any excuses for what happened but maybe she didn’t clock that it was your leg rather than tapping your bumper. I just find it incomprehensible that she didn’t get out of her car to ensure there wasn’t any damage to you or your car !
How could she not know she hit the OP given she knows she hit something and the OP was between the cars? There's no way she could have just hit the bumper.

Given what the OP said about her seeming flustered, I would guess she was distracted and then, possibly, a bit shocked so didn't really process what was pretty obvious, rather than have realised she hit someone and really just didn't care. That's also not an excuse. Driving require positive responsibility not just an absence of bad intent.
Royalbloo · 28/04/2021 19:58

That's a reportable hit and run and I wouldn't be speaking to her - report it

PaperMonster · 28/04/2021 19:58

Sorry you’ve been hurt, but to answer your question, no it doesn’t surprise me. Have seen some bloomin crazy stuff at school pick up time and my own child nearly became victim to a crazy woman who thought it was Ok to drive at a group of children crossing the road!

Joinedjustforthispost · 28/04/2021 19:59

Crikey op yanbu ! She sounds dangerous behind the wheel. I really hope you are ok , I wonder if she was under the influence of something? @Molyka88

Puntastic · 28/04/2021 19:59

Ouch! Hope all is OK with your knee, OP.

BlowDryRat · 28/04/2021 20:16

Poor you OP! I hope your leg's ok.

Definitely report it to your insurer and the police. It's too late to do a breathalyser test now but she left the scene of an accident without even giving her details.

Amanduh · 28/04/2021 20:21

Thing is it’s not a hit and run if it was a ‘omg i’m so sorry! Are you ok? I’m so sorry! Are you ok?’ If she apologised several times. And you nodded and said.. what? Did you say oh I’m ok, don’t worry about it etc then got back in your car? It’s not like she did it and drove off without speaking to you. I’m not excusing her, but maybe she doesn’t realise she has done damage - I can’t see anywhere near my bumper to know how tight I would be squeezing someones leg? What did you say after she apologised?

Cushionsnotpillows · 28/04/2021 20:27

@neveradullmoment99 and londoner, it is an offence to not stop at the scene of an accident involving injury and it's also an offence to not report it.

If you have a drivers licence in the U.K., you should know these basic facts.

If you don't, you do now Grin it's not up to OP/the woman involved to decide whether or not to involve the police, it's a legal requirement.

I see the last syllable of your name pretty much sums up your post.
PurpleWh1teGreen · 28/04/2021 20:29

I am hoping that the OP is being checked out hence the lack of updates.

OP for the love of the wee donkey if you are not in A&E get yer self down there pronto.

As PP have advised, you must get your knee assessed in case there is an issue that needs treatment.

Your injury was caused by a road traffic collision and so yes, you do also need to advise your insurance company and the police.

Just bad driving, some people are useless

Just bad driving can cause death.

Don't think the Op mentioned anything about nodding that she was ok; were you there? 🤔

Completely agree with Seigneur; if you can't judge where the front of your car is, you really shouldn't be behind the wheel of a car. 🙄

@Molyka88 hope you get checked out properly and your knee is ok. 🤞 Flowers

ForwardRanger · 28/04/2021 20:45

You were understandably shocked and tbh she probably was too. That doesn't excuse her behaviour! but I doubt she meant to be so callous.

I'm glad to read you'll be seeing a dr and contacting police. I'm surprised though that your first listed action is to contact the school who have no power to do anything. Perhaps out of information sharing with regard to road safety but nothing beyond that.

This is an incredibly common accident and one that has seriously maimed and even killed people. I'm so glad you are relatively OK.

StealthPolarBear · 28/04/2021 20:49

@Springsnake

Bloody hell ,why didn’t you say anything,or bang on her car
So now it's the op's fault?!
GreyhoundG1rl · 28/04/2021 20:50

That doesn't suggest it's the op's fault?

beginningoftheend · 28/04/2021 20:51

Report it now, and then you can report more details later when you have them. Don't talk yourself out of it.

Also get checked out medically too.

What a horrible, horrible shock Flowers

StealthPolarBear · 28/04/2021 20:53

OK maybe I misunderstood. Why didn't you do x or y suggests that the op should have taken control and stopped it happening or escalating

GreyhoundG1rl · 28/04/2021 20:56

I suppose it does, yes.
