To be shocked at what’s just happened on the school run

So today after picking DCs up from school/nursery a car that was parked up close behind my car put their car into accelerate instead of reverse and ended up pinning me between my rear bumper and their front bumper whilst I was putting bags etc in the boot.

Mum in question did not realise one of my legs was taking the brunt of this until I was shouting to tell her to reverse.
She did apologise at the time, but didn’t get out of the car to ask if I was ok or anything like that!

I’ve got home now and my knee already is swollen and starting to bruise.. I’m also thinking this could have been a much worse accident if this was DS stood in between the car.

Fortunately a parent came over to check if I was ok and he did catch the incident on his dash cam.
So would you put this down as an unfortunate accident or do anything about it? I’m not even sure who or if I would report it too.

OP posts:
Saz12 · 28/04/2021 18:32

Report it! The police can decide to act or not (though I hope they at least go see her), as they’re going to be able to see the full scene via other parents dash cam.
I’d also inform the school, again they can decide it’s up to the police and don’t act, you don’t need to decide for them.
And definitely get knee checked out. If you need private physio or whatever then claim against the driver.

If she didn’t realise she’d hit something that’s really worrying!!!

viques · 28/04/2021 18:33

I would report it, you don’t know if she has been involved in driving incidents before, if she has a licence, insurance, if the car is taxed ,mot ‘d etc. Unfortunately it appears that people involved in minor car accidents are often the ones who also fail to do comply with other car legislation.

You also need an reference number for your insurance in case there are later problems with your knee and you need to pay for physio .

HedgePutty · 28/04/2021 18:44

@neveradullmoment99 the driver was too out of it, or on drink/drugs to not see someone, then not realise they had hit an object, then not move straight away and unpin the object, then not stop and check they were okay and then not stop and phone the police/give their details.
That’s a lot of illegal.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 28/04/2021 18:49

The OP said she apologised? Hardly hit and run ffs.

It's still a hit and run. When you have an accident, you're supposed to stop and swap details at the scene, and if someone is injured (as OP was), you're supposed to ring the police as well.

PurpleDaisies · 28/04/2021 18:54

When you have an accident, you're supposed to stop and swap details at the scene, and if someone is injured (as OP was), you're supposed to ring the police as well.

Well yes, but the op didn’t seem to know this and it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that the driver didn’t know either. Has the op suggested she was deliberately trying to drive away without leaving details?

I’m not saying the driver did the right thing but I can see how someone might not know the proper process that should have happened, especially when they’re shaken up.

Hopefully the op has sought medical attention and contacted both the police and her insurer.

Springsnake · 28/04/2021 18:54

Bloody hell ,why didn’t you say anything,or bang on her car

EKGEMS · 28/04/2021 18:55

Omg-my husband's late grandfather was an Olympic hopeful but this type of accident happened to him between two vehicles causing a severe injury to his knees and ending his Olympic dreams. I sure hope you aren't seriously injured

marblegarble1 · 28/04/2021 18:55

Report it to the police and insurance, in case you need to make a personal injury claim if it doesn't recover.

HumunaHey · 28/04/2021 18:56

@CarmelBeach

So sorry

Go to the police. Don't let the school talk you out of it. I'd just get the dash cam footage and go straight to the police, why tell the school at all?

This is absolutely appalling. Document everything.

I hope you feel better soon.

Why would the school try and talk her out of going to the police? Parents and their lack of care when driving around schools is usually a concern for schools. They should welcome this being reported.
FatAnneTheDealer · 28/04/2021 18:57

This is one of the many reasons why a 1/4 mile exclusion zone outside schools for cars, except for residents and disabled ought to be in force.

She was already in violation of the Highway Code by running her engine while the car was stationary and parked.

Abraxan · 28/04/2021 18:57

Ideally you should have your leg checked. Crush injuries can be nasty. Some of the injuries could be internal so definitely worth having it looked at properly.

Ask the witness for his dash cam footage if possible. Do you have the reg number and car details?

Speak to the driver if you know who they are, or see if you can find out - perhaps ask school to put out a message for the car owner to come forward to speak with you. Hopefully they hadn't realised you were stuck and being crushed, and didn't knowingly drive off.

KarmaStar · 28/04/2021 18:58

Definitely report to the police, your insurance company and visit your Dr.the driver should have given you her name and contact details and is required by law to report it herself within 24 hours.

Viviennemary · 28/04/2021 18:58

It was a hit and run. Oh sorry did I run you over. You're still breathing cheerio. She didn't even get out the car.

Cottonheadedninymuggins · 28/04/2021 18:58

Definitely get it checked out and reported. My mum had an industrial accident which the doctor said was essentially a bumper/crush injury. This happened roughly 2001/2002 and 20 years on she still has pain and problems with it.

GreyhoundG1rl · 28/04/2021 18:59

@Viviennemary

It was a hit and run. Oh sorry did I run you over. You're still breathing cheerio. She didn't even get out the car.
That's not the definition of a hit and run.
lolacola77 · 28/04/2021 19:00

Go to the police! She was completely negligent and left the scene. I would also go to hospital to get checked. Please don't let this selfish twat get away with it

BoomBoomsCousin · 28/04/2021 19:02

You should get your knee checked asap. When you do so you should tell them it was caused by a road traffic accident as the NHS is supposed to reclaim the cost of your treatment from the insurance industry.

Then report it to the police - an injury RTA is not a small incident to brush off. As well as compensation for the costs of your injury from her insurance, her bad driving needs to be dealt with too. There's the poor driving resulting in injury and after the accident not exchanging details.

stackemhigh · 28/04/2021 19:03

The OP was hit and hurt and the driver didn’t stop to give her details or check OP was OP or call for help. Ergo hit abs run.

Thatnameistaken · 28/04/2021 19:07

Total hit and run, she should never have driven away without exchanging details. I hope you haven't damaged anything too much

Mangofandangoo · 28/04/2021 19:09

Report to the police. It could have been a child

sunflowersandbuttercups · 28/04/2021 19:11

I’m not saying the driver did the right thing but I can see how someone might not know the proper process that should have happened, especially when they’re shaken up.

Surely it's obvious that when you HIT SOMEONE WITH YOUR CAR you don't just say "oh, sorry!" and fuck off?

L0bstersLass · 28/04/2021 19:21

@L0bstersLass

You should do two things, one immediately and one later this evening when your dh is home.

Immediately - report this hit and run to the police. They will want to breathalyse the driver. Get the registration number form the chap that has the footage. If your knee is affected you will need to have done this to be able to claim on insurance

Later - go to hospital. You should do this today. You'll be in shock now and not feeling the pain. Hopefully all is well, but if there is an issue and you don't do anything about it now you will massively regret this in years to come. Again, if there is damage the fact that you had it checked on the day will be very helpful in any future action.

I really hope that the reason you've not been back for a while is because you're taking the advice that I and many others have give. You really must act on this tonight. It cannot wait until morning.
Skyliner001 · 28/04/2021 19:22

No, sorry I would not put this down to an accident. Has she got out and apologise. But because she didn't you can only assume that she didn't realise how serious it was. So I'm afraid I would go to the police.

Killahangilion · 28/04/2021 19:23

Definitely report it to the police and then get her insurance details.

A parent hit me with her car whilst I was taking my DS to school. Another parent phoned the police as woman was acting all hysterical. She was subsequently prosecuted for careless driving and I received £x compensation from her insurance company.

dottiedaisee · 28/04/2021 19:37

Do you think the driver actually realised that she had injured you? Am not making any excuses for what happened but maybe she didn’t clock that it was your leg rather than tapping your bumper.
I just find it incomprehensible that she didn’t get out of her car to ensure there wasn’t any damage to you or your car !
