To not want ds kitted out in dinosaurs and sharks?

Aliceandthemarchhare · 26/04/2021 09:43

Ds is four months and mostly wears babygros. I had mostly white and grey and cream to start with but obviously people bought us things and there was a lot of blue and I like the darker navy blues - it seems to suit him.

However looking for a sunhat for him and I’ve had to pay £11 for a plain navy one. I forgot his sleeping bag on holiday recently and had to get one covered in sharks.

Why are boys clothes so miserable? Surely baby boys can wear bright colours and slightly friendlier animals than T rexes and sharks?!

@Aliceandthemarchhare

uhtred I do get your point but I’m not dressing ds in pink.

I do agree there’s a lot of silly stereotyping but I’m not going to be the one to decide to break it.

I’m just personally not a massive fan of dinos or trucks or sharks.

😂 who said you have to dress him in pink?? (And why not?) there are other colours between navy and pink.

If you’re not willing to step outside the gendered clothing ranges then maybe you should get cracking on designing your own, not pink with dinosaurs clothing. Or just follow the countless suggestions on this page. Wink

CoffeeWithCheese · 26/04/2021 13:54

DD2 would have loved dinosaurs and sharks up until about a year ago (she's 8 now) - she would quite often gravitate to the 'boys' section in clothing because "dinosaurs could eat all the unicorns".

UhtredRagnarson · 26/04/2021 13:55

@swimlittlefishy

Your issue seems to be complaining about the gendering of baby clothes while you personally support the gendering of baby clothes. I don't really get it. Just look a bit harder for what you want.
Yeah. This.
TheKeatingFive · 26/04/2021 13:58

My DS’s also had bits that were technically ‘girls’. Not pink, unicorns or sparkles or anything like that, but from the girls section, unisex looking or just a bit softer.

HaveringWavering · 26/04/2021 14:00

@Grognonne

I don’t understand how boats and cars mean the clothes are for boys? Surely both sexes use those forms of transport?!
I was once standing behind a couple in Tesco shopping for their baby girl, the man picked up a set with cars in it and said “oh no, that’s a boy’s one”- I could not help myself and blurted out “what, do women not drive cars then?!”. He was quite big and probably sleep-deprived. One look was enough to send me scuttling off into the vegetable aisle! I stand by my opinion though Grin. I also hate the implication that girls would not be interested in dinosaurs. I loved my plastic Dinos as a kid.

The thing with baby/toddler clothes is that the girls’ stuff is often skirts, dresses, tights, frills etc that are clearly femal clothing. So fair enough that parents do not buy it for boys. However boy stuff is not styled or shaped in a way that would only fit a male child. Yet parents of girls rarely buy them cargo trousers or plainly-shaped T shirts. I don’t know why (I have a boy so have not had the opportunity to practice what I preach.). In the 70s when I grew up kids’ clothes were much more unisex in colour and style (brown mostly!).

@Aliceandthemarchhare NEXT do plenty of plain stuff as well as the Dino and truck stuff.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 26/04/2021 14:02

Everywhere I go at the moment it's the most irritating phrase in the world plastered all over kids clothes (always girls) "Be kind". Fuck off with your fucking be kind!

HaveringWavering · 26/04/2021 14:04

And I always find it hilarious that people say “blue is for boys” when most adult women have wardrobes stuffed full of blue and navy.

SecretaryOfNagriculture · 26/04/2021 14:04

I got a load of Billybandit clothes in tkmaxx. These included T-shirts with a pineapple with octopus tentacles, a red panda with anime eyes, a basset hound with angel wings, a samurai cat, and also a jumper with cranes (birds) on it.
There are limited options for boys. I don’t care how many people on MN say they dress their son in pink tutus everyday, I’m not buying unicorns or pink or sequins for my son. Usually only 1/4 of a shop is boys or unisex clothes.

pumpmink · 26/04/2021 14:05

I get mine from H&M and Next where they offer plain or adult fashion in toddler sizes. I use the dinosaurs and sharks for home or pj's but the other stuff for when going out and about I use plain or adult fashion stuff. I like plain because you can mix and match easier and dinos/sharks all come as sets most of the time and just look wrong when they don't wear it in sets. Sometimes DS has messy lunch where I change his top but his bottoms are clean so no point washing it and when I find a new top, it's shark on a dinosaur bottom which is annoying.

On the subject of slogans...anyone able to explain this one to me? It’s all over Alesha Dixon’s new clothing line for Asda. I’m only 30 and consider myself relatively “with it” when it comes to trends etc but I’m lost on “Steez” 😂😂😅

steez
/stiːz/
nounINFORMAL•US
a person's distinctive and attractive or impressive style of dress or way of doing things.
"the pearl studs added a snazzy touch to her steez"
the quality of being effortlessly stylish or fashionable.
"this humble city of ours has some serious steez"

I hated that boys clothes were so dull and there was a lot less choice than for girls. I discovered Scandi clothing and haven't looked back.

There's a good second hand market so I buy most preloved but I also know that if I buy new I can sell on afterwards (people even buy torn stuff to upcycle) and if it's in good condition it actually works out about the same price a supermarket stuff.

Ds is in a lovely light blue top with gold trim and a rainbow print today.

I love that they do a print and then make that into tops, dungarees, trousers, hats, dresses etc. There's no discrimination on that basis. We were able to get my niece into a dress for the first time ever just because it had sharks on it.

Marks and Spencer have some nice bits at the moment - I got my DS some lovely joggers with sloths on and noticed last time I was in that they do dresses and tops in the same material. Really nice to see something less gendered.

Jojo Maman Bébé, Next, H&M and sometimes Sainsbury’s are all good for less gendered clothes, in my experience.

Although I did just buy DS1 girls pyjamas - because they have pigs all over them and he loves pigs - so I may not be the best judge!

mam0918 · 26/04/2021 14:31

Whats wrong with sharks and dinos?

That said there are plenty of plain/unisex things... peter rabbit, disney, SHMILY and just plain colours are everywhere right now like greys, greens and yellows.

What bothers me is when the blue and unisex stuff is twice the price of the exact same thing in pink, it happens up often and my DH calls it the 'willy tax'.

worriedatthemoment · 26/04/2021 14:33

Clothes aren't gendered as such you can put on what you like
But some people do like pink or dinosaurs so they shouldn't not exsist because others don't
Plenty of not dinosours etc in primark, next , h & m and supermarkets

LolaNova · 26/04/2021 14:38

I’m still yet to find a kids clothing brand that is quite to my tastes. Lindex is the front runner currently.

I don’t particularly like dinosaurs or sharks.
I hate unicorns with a passion and mermaids are a bit shit.
Foxes are alright I suppose but for some reason I find them irritatingly middle class.
Butterflies are mostly hideous.
I’m sick of grey, blue, and khaki for boys.
I hate camo print.
I’m not keen on pink for girls.
I’m not a fan of glitter or sequins on children’s clothing.
I hate most slogans.
I find a lot of the scandi prints a bit shit.
I really, really don’t like cars, planes or trucks on clothes.
If I see one more item of clothing with ‘be/bee kind’ written on it I will vomit on the spot.
I don’t want to dress my children in various shades of sludge (I have a friend whose baby daughter’s wardrobe is entirely brown, beige, rust and mustard).
Frills are irritating.
I shouldn’t have to iron baby clothes.

Basically what I want is botanical themed prints that aren’t necessarily ‘pretty flowers’ and Liberty rip offs, whales and sea creatures, bright but not garish colours, bugs and bees, moons and stars, rainbows, and separates rather than rompers and dungarees (just not practical IME!).

Seriously? 😆

Waiting423 · 26/04/2021 14:42

It is highly likely he will want mountains of dinosaurs and sharks as he develops his own little personality .... we are a long time grown up - let him enjoy the childlike things

I think it’s because they are a very Jojo thing! I’m aware I’m being ridiculous!
AprilShowerThoughts · 26/04/2021 14:50

Check out the Scandinavian kids clothing online - e.g. Ej Sikke Lej, Katvig, Mini Rodini. My sons were technicolour infants!

H1974 · 26/04/2021 14:51

I find it infuriating that retailers who sell clothes have very limited option when it comes to boys clothes.

Everywhere you go, there are rows and rows of girl clothes but once you get to the boys section there is barely anything. Then when they have all the return to school clothes out, the boys section gets even smaller.

I don't mind gendered clothing, but honestly, boys like a variety of clothes too Angry

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 26/04/2021 14:53

I'm not sure where all you lot are shopping.

I almost exclusively shop in the 'boys' section for my dds. They prefer the clothes there and the clothes and shoes are harder wearing, and have pockets, which is pretty rare in 'girls' clothing.

shouldistop · 26/04/2021 14:56

I have 2 boys and they have plenty of clothes without sharks or dinosaurs.

goose1964 · 26/04/2021 15:01

Just wait until they're into Spider-Man and Paw Patrol. You can easily confuse a four year old offering them and dinosaurs and sharks.

muggleaunt · 26/04/2021 15:01

@Aliceandthemarchhare Boots and Vertbaudet have good ranges for boys, plenty of colour, plains, stripes, stars, animals. I was sorry that Boots sizes didn't go beyond age 6 as their clothes would have been fine for another year or two.
