She posted the below statement in response to channel 5 tv show made called “Celebrities what happened to your face”.

@Vinto I didn’t see the show - but it also sounds like they commented on her weight gains and losses as well - which has sod all to do with the filler etc.

I do agree that the constant pushing of unrealistic images should stop. It’s not just surgery, Botox and the like - it’s the hundreds of filters on every social image, the air brushing etc.

It’s a shame really that lockdown and it’s stopping of our usual beauty routines and treatments hasn’t made a more realistic aesthetic shine through.

To go after any human like this, regardless of who they are, is disgusting. Its bullying. Imagine having the things you dislike about yourself plastered all over every newspaper and given an hour documentary for the entire world to see. Horrific behaviour.

Mumdiva99 · 24/04/2021 12:24

I thought the statement was very refrained.
I didn't watch the show (and wouldn't). We shouldn't live in world where it's ok to disect anyone's looks for entertainment. She has a fair point and deserves an apology.

(I did used to watch GS years ago....she was a very young girl making some questionable choices on live TV. But to slate her appearance is wrong and unnecessary. For those that don't know her she was friendly and fun, the sort of girl that would he easy to hang out with as very uncomplicated).

LadyOfLittleLeisure · 24/04/2021 12:24

I actually can't believe they would make and show something like that considering all the issues around Jeremy Kyle and Love Island suicides. Terrible.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 24/04/2021 12:25

I've never heard of her and very rarely watch anything on C5 but this is just fucking appalling.

To claim she's fair game because she's had surgery is just... where's your empathy, people?

Would it be okay to make a show about a fat person and go on about how disgusting their body is? Or someone dangerously underweight? Those are choices too, right?

How about an ordinary woman who wears foundation? That's a choice. Maybe we should have camera crews ready to leap out the airing cupboard and catch women without their makeup, then make a program about how awful their wrinkles are?

I fucking despair.

barbrahunter · 24/04/2021 12:25

I remember Charlotte Crosby from when she was on 'Mastermind' and I thought her a very sweet and charming young woman. This channel 5 piece seems horrible. It's an awful state of affairs when young women are vilified in the media for following fashions and trends.

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 24/04/2021 12:26

Participating in a trashy reality show once doesn't mean she then had to unwillingly participate in another though. Consent once is not blanket consent for everything similar forever.
There's a big difference.

WorraLiberty · 24/04/2021 12:32

There is absolutely no justification for what Channel 5 have done here.

But this thread will get more than a few who try to justify it because she 'put herself in the public eye'.

You only have to look at some threads that run into 100s, with MNetters slagging off celebrities appearance and trying to 'justify' it in this way.

The same MNetters are often seen complaining about the nasty men who pull women's looks apart and comment on their bodies.

MrsIsobelCrawley · 24/04/2021 12:32

@Poptart4

But it's ok to pick apart the Kardashians??

Don't get me wrong I despise everything the Kardashians stand for but these type of shows are made about them and other celebs all the time and no bats an eye. But because you like Charlotte Crosby suddenly it's not ok?

I personally cant stand all these z list celebs being handed millions for pissing the bed and having sex on TV. Also all the plastic surgery they have putting pressure on young girls to look a certain way.

Charlotte has no talent whatsoever but has made an extremely good living from fame. Unfortunately this is the bad side of that. We all have to take the good with the bad.

What a nasty post.
Confusedandshaken · 24/04/2021 12:36

@FionnulaTheCooler

The fact this show was made and aired is a disgrace, especially so soon after Nikki Grahame died due to her life long struggle with her looks and self esteem which caused her eating disorder. Really poor judgement call by Channel 5.
Whilst I absolutely disagree with body shaming I don't think we can say exactly what caused NG's eating disorder particularly as it started when she was only 7. Anorexia is an incredibly complicated and deep rooted mental illness.
Helmetbymidnight · 24/04/2021 12:37

That poor girl.

No idea who she is or the show - but my god, to do that to a young woman - that's a whole heap of hateful misogyny.

And yes, it won't just be this poor girl affected by it - it sends a powerful message to ALL young women - 'act right or you'll be next'.

Confusedandshaken · 24/04/2021 12:42

It's very sad that so many perfectly attractive young people (mostly women) who appear on reality tv carry on to distort their appearance with excessive and unnatural cosmetic interventions. A great deal of blame should be laid with the doctors and aestheticians who offer them free procedures in exchange for publicity. Those are the people I think should be named and shamed.

I'm all in favour of a nip and a tuck here and there and am no stranger to non surgical interventions myself but I would like to know who these young people go to so I can avoid them like the plague.

Everyday21 · 24/04/2021 12:44

I'm not a fan of Charlotte at all but my god what a disgusting tv show. That poor girl. She isnt harming others. Someone up thread said there must be demand for this kind of trash, I hope C5 see that there is not place for this in this day and age

The geordie shore lot have said loads of times that they were constantly offered free surgery and once they started it snowballed. Their mental health has been badly affected

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 24/04/2021 12:46

I've heard of her but have never watched Geordie shore. I imagine she was pretty young when she put herself up for that like the Love Island people.

It's a powerful thing the media and more so with social media these days. The lure of fame and fortune for vulnerable young people will be strong but do they really appreciate the dark side to it when they sign up? Is it fair to say 'she put herself up for it' and then for the rest of her life people have carte Blanche to make shitty programmes about her? I think that's a crap buck passing excuse and Channel 4 need to be better than that.

I think this programme sounds disgusting
I also think that media pressure on young people to have Botox and fillers and manipulate their appearance in bizarre ways is disgusting

If it was a serious programme confronting the ills of plastic surgery I think that is a programme that should be made

But if it was that it wouldn't be called a click baiting title like 'yuck what has she done to her face' or whatever crap it was called.

Vinto · 24/04/2021 12:48

A lot of these stars take their free enhancements to their Instagram to promote where they've had their surgery or aesthetic treatments to their followers.

It's a cycle of an ideal/trend bing created, pawns being used to promote the product, the consumer buying it.

The pawns are the celebrities.

The consumer is us and our kids.

Who's the creator?

Ostryga · 24/04/2021 12:55

They commissioned it in March 2020, a month after Caroline Flack had died.

If that isn’t the lowest of the low then I don’t know what is. Truly hideous television.

Pyewackect · 24/04/2021 12:59

@Vinto

The issue is inflated, swollen, painful looking overfilled lips has become the norm within a sector of society, in a more or less unregulated industry where anyone can gain a certificate to inject into 18 year olds faces. Popping in to a beauticians and handing over as little as £100 will give you the look you aspire to from tv and Instagram.

The mental health aspect needs to be examined from both sides, and promoting body dysmorphia is just as damaging as walking on egg shells around an issue and saying 'Don't listen to the haters, you look gorgeous Hun!'

Yep, totally agree.
Imreaaaaady · 24/04/2021 13:05

I have no feelings towards her and I've never watched geordie shore but this is so out of line. How are we supposed to teach our kids about kindness when mainstream TV channels air this shit? It's nothing more than a 1hr long bullying programme. It's sick and wrong.

SusannahSophia · 24/04/2021 13:21

It was broadcast at 10pm on 22/04 if you want to complain to Ofcom.

HollowTalk · 24/04/2021 13:23

Honestly, I could understand someone committing suicide after an hour long programme slagging them off appeared on national TV.

StormcloakNord · 24/04/2021 13:24

I don't know why they took this approach.

Why not go at it from a larger perspective and examine the cultural and societal garbage that has caused someone who was beautiful inside and out to feel the need to spend thousands on their appearance.

I really do feel for celebrities like Charlotte. The pressure to look a certain way and to "keep up" with trends to do with physical beauty must be absolutely stifling.

TheQueef · 24/04/2021 13:30

Poor lass.
Anyone trying to excuse these assassination type programmes as just another reality genre are either five watt or plain old trolls themselves.

I don't watch 5 due to the barrage of benefit claimant and tenant propaganda so I'm not surprised.

Bottom feeders.

HollowTalk · 24/04/2021 13:31

I've just written to complain about this. The email address is
[email protected] if anyone else is interested.

thatsgotit · 24/04/2021 13:33

I'm so glad she hit back at that programme, it was cruel and exploitative. Personally I think she looked way prettier before she had the work done and I'm saddened she thought she needed to change her look, but her self-image is her own choice and shouldn't be turned into cheap entertainment. Cheap Channel 5 exploitation exemplified. No wonder people in the public eye develop self-esteem issues.
