I'm looking to get a new car have looked at the Peugeot 2008 and Nissan qashqai and possibly the vw tiguan (although that's a bit more pricey for decent reg) my budget is 11k. What cars do you have and how reliable would you say it is?

By SUV we know what we mean. Tall boxy cars that emulate the shape and car type that first became popularised with the Discovery, Range Rover, Cayenne etc, but quickly trickled down to smaller and cheaper cars once the fashionable looks element and perception of space became a selling point. They have high ride height.

It would be a lot easier if people used the term Crossover instead of SUV which is ambiguous...

A crossover, crossover SUV, or crossover utility vehicle is a type of sport utility vehicle-like vehicle built with unibody frame construction. Crossovers are often based on a platform shared with a passenger car, as opposed to a platform shared with a pickup truck.

If you mean "off road worthy 4x4 with a monocoque body and low range gearbox" then you're talking a tiny proportion of cars in today's market, the kind of Land Cruiser, Jeep Wrangler vehicle that few people really need but some love if they live rurally and tow etc.

Both those vehicles are body-on-frame construction, not monocoque.

Sorry, but I really disagree about your opinion of the acceleration. Maybe the older 1.3 but the new ones have 160bhp and are pretty quick off the line and when overtaking etc.

A 0-62 time of 10.2 seconds says otherwise. It couldn’t pull the skin off a rice pudding. Slow as fuck!

@hotpatooties1

my budget is 11k

A lot of people missing a pivotal piece of information in the OP.. if budget is 11k I don't think a Jaguar f pace, Audi Q7 or Range Rover are very practical suggestions Confused

Older RR or Q7 can be had for that.

Mitsubishi Outlander Phev. Spacious, great to drive and hybrid. Generally just fill up with petrol once a month so saving a fortune and kinder to the environment.

BanginChoons · 22/04/2021 17:27

I have a 5 year old Pug 2008. It cost me 7k 6months ago, and so far has served me well. I commute an hour each way and some days drive around while at work too. I've found it much more economical than my previous car which was a focus. The boot is a good size, I can fit shopping in as well as my work kit. I would recommend it.
The only things I don't like are the lack of heated windscreen (this could be a feature on a different model though) and it does have big blind spots compared to my previous car, although I am used to this now. There is no road tax to pay which is a bonus.

MangosteenSoda · 22/04/2021 17:35

Biggest two cars I’ve had are Nissan X-Trail (older one, this was ages ago and it was pretty old then) and VW Passat estate car.

The estate car won hands down on boot space. SUV boots are high (good for tall dogs perhaps), but less floor/useful space.

I think the X-Trail may have been a bit bigger in the back seat area. Tbh, no matter the exterior size of the car, backseats don’t seem to vary much in size.

ohsuzannah · 22/04/2021 17:44

I've got a Peugeot 3008, I chose it because I'm disabled and need space for my scooter in the back.
I absolutely love it, it makes my life so much easier with its various features!
( it even has a drivers seat massager with I love on long trips)

HerRoyalNotness · 22/04/2021 17:59

We just got rid of a Tiguan. It was reliable though but was on its last legs at about 12yo.

We have a Honda Pilot now. Seats 8 and very roomy. Good head height, lots of boot space with the third row not in use. Also has an under seat storage which increases storage for when the third row is used. I’m enjoying it so far, nice to drive and everyone I know that has one likes it

unchienandalusia · 22/04/2021 18:02

I have a disco sport (live v rurally before you all start) and it's not a gas guzzler. 50mpg thank you very much. It's brilliant as has two seats in the boot which pre lockdown I needed for ferrying the kids about.

Not sure about budget ie what older models are going for.

Miseryl · 22/04/2021 18:05

They are so ugly and look very cumbersome to drive. 🤮🤮🤮

M0rT · 22/04/2021 18:20

Does anyone know if there is a car that gives you the seating position of an suv but is not an suv?
I don't need to be high up but the seats on suvs I've driven don't do that thing where your bum is lower than your knees.
I basically want to sit in the equivalent of a dining chair while I'm driving!

Marble2302 · 22/04/2021 18:29

Isn't an SUV something middle aged women who had their kids in their 40's drive while wearing Joules tops and Skechers go walks 🤣

Not sure if it been mentioned, but I also have 3 children (well 6 but 3 are older, and we have a 7 seater if needed..) and my megane was getting too small in the back as they are growing so I've not got a VW Golf Plus- it's so roomy but not much bigger to drive than a normal golf- I think it's a bit taller! Would definitely recommend if you like the golf!

twddarylstruelove · 22/04/2021 19:19

I HAVE got..not not got Blush

flippertygibbit · 22/04/2021 19:22

Suzuki Grand Vitara - 2.8 Petrol - love it, so fuel efficient, comfortable and nice to look at - extremely reasonable insurance too.

LoveFall · 22/04/2021 19:34

Toyota RAV4 (Canada). Very reliable. Had it for years. Also good gas mileage. Bought it during a month long period where I live nicknamed "snowmageddon." We get little snow so the City does not plow side streets. Really only plows bus routes.

The car saved my bacon getting to work.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 22/04/2021 19:36

Kia Sportage and love it

Nosugarmonster · 22/04/2021 19:37

Dacia duster?

Sarahlou63 · 22/04/2021 19:42

Had an (old - 2004) Porsche Cayenne S for 4 years, had to sell it last year Sad

Bloody loved that car - blindingly fast and beautiful quality. Also very good for smoothing the sand in the horse arena!!

Lazypuppy · 22/04/2021 19:44

Renault kadjar is brilliant and was cheaper than ford and peugeot

Shamoo · 22/04/2021 19:48

If you need car seats do your research carefully! The Peugeot 3008 does not fit iso-fix bases (which is beyond mind blowing to me)!

purdypuma · 22/04/2021 19:52

Another vote for the Ateca! We've had Seats for years & never had an issue with reliability. They're a nice looking bit of kit underpinned by VW but cheaper. They hold their value well in comparison to competitors & get write ups from the motoring journos. You can get one within your budget that's 3 to 4 years old but depends on the level of spec you want eg an "excellence" (top of the range) adds about 2 to 3k onto prices.
