I'm looking to get a new car have looked at the Peugeot 2008 and Nissan qashqai and possibly the vw tiguan (although that's a bit more pricey for decent reg) my budget is 11k. What cars do you have and how reliable would you say it is?

I have a VW Touareg. It’s a great car, lots of space, but it’s so needy! Always moaning about something, always some light on the dashboard!
My BIL has one a year older than mine & his glass sunroof has stopped working.
I would say not very reliable

I used to have a Tiguan and that was a lot less needy!

billyt · 22/04/2021 11:16

I have a 2019 Qashqai 1.3 petrol Tekna+ so all the toys.Grin Lovely car to drive, very comfortable, great acceleration and I get better fuel economy than the Focus that I sold to get this car.

Technically, Qashqais and similar are classed as crossovers is not quite SUV...

I'd happily get another.

mrsnoodle55 · 22/04/2021 11:25

I bought a 3 year old Kia Sorento for £11k, 2 years ago. It’s fabulous, still got 2 yrs warranty left.

Proper seats in the boot available for the odd time my 16yr old and 2 kids in car seats need to travel together. Really practical. Am starting saving for the hybrid version when this dies a death in years to come as I’m a Kia convert after this.

MrsVeryTired · 22/04/2021 11:29

Jeep, proper 4x4, needed for country roads in winter and good space, 2 dogs.

MissConductUS · 22/04/2021 11:29

I have a 2020 Subaru Forester and it's brilliant. We traded in a 2009 Forester with 160k miles that never failed us. Nothing beats a Subaru in snow and the reliability is tops.

Elai1978 · 22/04/2021 11:30

Lovely car to drive, very comfortable, great acceleration

Very poor acceleration in the 1.3 QQ. I’d avoid QQ like the plague due to poor reliability which is not something you’d historically from Nissan, same with VW. Kia and Hyundai are great with long warranties, also worth looking at the Honda CRV.

Fyredraca · 22/04/2021 11:34

Volvo xc90 here, I love it.
We are rural and live close to the Alps so get heavy snow in winter.
It's an automatic and can go from 5 to 7 seats. Massive boot. Pleasure to drive it.

LadyCatStark · 22/04/2021 11:37

I also love my Seat Ateca. It’s basically the same as the VW version but much cheaper.

Montsti · 22/04/2021 11:39

I have an Audi Q7...live abroad and have 4 kids. It’s very comfortable, 7 seats, great acceleration and very solid/secure. Perfect for us...

CommanderBurnham · 22/04/2021 11:42

I loved my rav4 when I had it.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 22/04/2021 11:44

I have a Nissan Murano. Not many people have heard of them! It's basically a giant Qashqai with minor sporting pretensions. Mine is a 2008 one and I paid just over £4k for it about three years ago.

I only really use it for longer journeys to see family or go on holiday; if I do anything local I get the tube or walk. It has tons of room inside, although the boot isn't as big as (say) an XC90 or Audi Q7 it's big enough for us and our going-away stuff.

I've been very pleased with it. Considering it's 13 years old it's proving to be very reliable. It's passed the MOTs I've put it through without any advisories, and besides normal servicing I've just had to put new tyres on it once. And it's ULEZ compliant.

Mollylikestodance · 22/04/2021 11:55

Not an SUV but we have a Kia Sportage and love it. Literally nothing to complain about - recently was time for an upgrade and we got the exact same car again. Would highly recommend

We've got the Qashqai Teckna +. 1.3. The nicest car I've had in years. However previous car was a Tucson and it was bigger in the back for passengers

idontlikealdi · 22/04/2021 11:58

The QQ is actually tiny in the back. Twins and a dog means we need a lot more space than that. Ended up with a zafira, not pretty nor an SUB but reliable, huge boot, 7 seats if needed. Also in your budget for a newish one, our most recent one was 10.5 a couple of years ago.

The VW is nice but £££

SacreBleeurgh · 22/04/2021 12:00

Qashqais are a disaster for car seats in the back as far as I can gather from car seat safety Facebook groups, especially for 3 children.

We have a Skoda Kodiaq and I absolutely love it. Would highly recommend.

Sickoffamilydrama · 22/04/2021 12:00

They look hideous but one of the most practical cars I've ever had was a Ford tourneo. It had sliding doors huge boot space and separate seats so 3 car seats fitted in it. Oh and the sat nav is brilliant way better than the car I have at the moment which is much posher.

Sickoffamilydrama · 22/04/2021 12:03

This is them www.ford.co.uk/cars/tourneo-connect
In fact DH needs a Van type car for work and running the kids around I might have to see what's about.

RickJames · 22/04/2021 12:03

We have a VW Tiguan and it's great, it seems expensive to run because it's a company car and so it gets serviced etc at the dealership but if I had a second hand one I'd find a decent local garage and it would be cheaper. We used to have a Volvo XC60 and I absolutely loved that. I really like Volvos.

If you are concerned about space then I'd go for an estate car. It's amazing what you can fit in one - we once had a Passat estate and it was like a van with the back seats down.

(Country dweller/ live in the hills.)

constantsnaxking · 22/04/2021 12:05

If I had the money I'd always pick a Volvo

newnortherner111 · 22/04/2021 12:05

None.

If you are not living in the countryside then you don't need one.

Marie5678 · 22/04/2021 12:13

OK maybe I shouldn't have used the 'suv' word and maybe just said a bigger car lol I'm not strictly looking for a suv just a bigger car as I don't think the golf will be big enough for me especially as the kids grow. I used to have an astra which imo was great I don't need a buggy or anything in the boot I just made the assumption of three kids naturally means I needed a bigger car.

How old are your DCs?

susiella · 22/04/2021 12:24

Jeep Cherokee. I can fit 2 bales of straw, 3 sacks of horse feed and my big Lurcher dog in it. I also live in the arse end of nowhere at the top of a big hill..
That do you Darker ?

RampantIvy · 22/04/2021 12:26

My justification for owning a 4WD Kuga is that we are rural and live on a hill on the edge of the Pennines. It is the only car I have owned that can get up our hill in the snow. I also need a sizeable boot for ferrying DD between home and university.

I would also say that the Kuga is the best car I have ever owned. I have had it for 7 years, and the only time it has let me down was after the first lockdown when I hadn’t driven it for 4 months and the battery was so dead it needed replacing.

My car is a diesel and we are looking at the hybrid version, so I was interested to read your comments @GameSetMatch.

coogee · 22/04/2021 12:28

You didn't actually use the 'suv' word.
