To think only some areas are full of money obsessed people?

Maybe an odd one?!

We’re moving soon and I said to DH “I’m looking forward to moving somewhere where people don’t talk about money all the time - how much x property sold for, how much x earns, how much x costs.”

DH said “Everywhere is like that! Money is status. People like to show off.”

I said the area we’re in now (“up-and-come” london) wasn’t like that before it became so pricey (we’ve been here a very, very long time). That’s because, I said, people didn’t get their self-worth from their earnings when it wasn’t such a wealthy place. DH thinks I’m romanticising it.

AIBU to think that in some places people don’t talk about money constantly?! Or does everyone, everywhere?

Grew up in N Yorks, now in Cornwall. Both fab areas for a mix of people. Friendly, straightforward people in the main. Love that the dcs are being raised here and have a lovely mix of friends from all kinds of backgrounds. I do not want to raise narrow minded, materialistic children who don't appreciate how privileged they are.

I can't imagine ever caring about having the latest I phone or a blingy designer bag. I'd rather spend money on travel. Life is about experiences and people in my view.

I always think it's interesting how much mil measures her worth by number of possessions whereas dh and I are constantly at the charity shop trying to get rid of ours!

I live in London and I have no idea what my neighbours / people at the school gates earn, what their house costs and, in the case of people at the school gates, the car they drive (or even if they have one!). It not really discussed. Ditto how well their kids are doing at school, book bands etc. I am always amazed how many people on Mumsnet know their kid is top of the class, has the highest reading age etc.
