To vote with my head instead of my heart?

I need advice from random people as I don’t like to talk politics in real life.

I’m in scotland and we have an election next month. The 2 main parties in my area are SNP and conservative. TBH I really dislike them both, but absolutely detest SNP. For reasons I’m not going to get in to I really don’t want scotland to be independent (also, that is not what I want this tread to be about!). I found it so difficult during the last referendum-people were horrific to each other and I want that vote to stand.

So, every time there has been an election I have voted for the party I do like, but every time the results come out the percentages are tiny for any party that is not SNP or conservative! So, basically, I feel like my vote is being wasted.

So....
YABU-vote with your heart for the party you want

YANBU-vote conservative, the lesser of 2 evils (in my eyes) and hopefully we won’t have to go through a second referendum

Again-this is not a thread to change my mind on my reasons for being against Scottish independence, so I won’t be having that argument.

“Are you hard of understanding or deliberately playing dumb?”

Neither - I’m saying, if you really actually struggle to pick out a placename in English, in a different colour from the Gaelic on a sign...

How can you possibly cope with a sign all in English, but with the same amount of words?

If you can't work out the difference between 12 and 6, you need to go back to school.

Don't try to be facetious with me.

This is why so many people don't like the SNP - this is what they do.

Have we reached the "you said, she said" stage yet?

tabulahrasa · 23/04/2021 12:21

“If you can't work out the difference between 12 and 6, you need to go back to school.“

I specifically said - with the same number of places.

Or do you think road signs with 12 places on them don’t exist?

And, I’m not in anyway linked to the SNP, didn’t vote for them in the last election, not a supporter, not a member of the party... already mentioned that too.

Scottishskifun · 25/04/2021 19:06

Nicola Sturgeon confirmed herself today that there would have to be a border between England and Scotland for an Independent Scotland......
A lot of our food comes from English distribution centres and a lot of produce is sent to England.

So absolute carnage, likely rise in food costs (due to the extra expense of time for checks).

I hope people are starting to think about the economics of pandemic, plus independence cost, tax cost and a border impact on goods and businesses......

Quincie · 25/04/2021 19:17

The nearest private school in the SW is across the border. Would the trains to Carlisle still run - would there be customs checks, passport checks? And stuff going to Northern Ireland? nightmare.

WouldBeGood · 25/04/2021 19:24

As @Scottishskifun says, NS has said today there would need to be a border.

She’s also said repeatedly now they have not made detailed assessments of the practicalities nor economics of independence.

How they can ask people to vote for independence without these answers just beggars belief.

Unsure33 · 25/04/2021 19:32

I have voted for several different parties in the past and yes have voted tactically .

I think these days there are not so many people who just stick to one party .

Because things change . Leaders change .

I have voted Labour in the past but hell would freeze over before I voted with corbyn in charge .

And personally I don’t criticise other for what they choose ( as many do on here ). I would not be influenced by posts on here at all .

But I do think tactical voting is acceptable.

Greenflygatherer · 25/04/2021 19:36

SNP's Emma Harper is also pro border

www.google.com/amp/s/www.scotsman.com/news/politics/scotland-england-border-could-create-jobs-snp-candidate-suggests-3211180%3famp

She says it will create jobs, so that's fine then.

WouldBeGood · 25/04/2021 19:53

Emma Harper is another level

Greenflygatherer · 25/04/2021 20:35

I mean I can see where she's coming from.

For every job lost as a direct consequence of a border, they can be retrained as border enforcers and they will be employed to stand at the border, day and night. There really is no downsides to this marvellous plan.

There is over 100 miles to cover and even with social distancing, working in shifts, there will be a lot of new jobs created.

Scottishskifun · 25/04/2021 20:41

@Greenflygatherer 😂 your killing me have you thought about stand up?!

DreamDancing · 25/04/2021 20:42

I think Anas Sarawak is coming across well as the new Scottish Labour leader.
It’s a shame he’s only been in post for a couple of months.
Listening to him on Jeremy Vine this week, on QT and Andrew Marr I like the idea of a Scottish Parliament working towards recovery from the pandemic rather than plunging everyone into constitutional upheaval.

Nicola Sturgeon was thoroughly bad tempered on Andrew Marr today (not Marr’s finest performance either) and Keith Brown was similarly miserable on QT. Surly and lacking in energy.
We’ve lived in England for 20 something years and have been thinking about buying property in Scotland with a view to returning in the next few years.
There’s no way we’ll be doing this while the future is still so uncertain and to be honest Scotland under SNP rule doesn’t look appealing even if Scotland stays in the union.

Mistressinthetulips · 25/04/2021 22:20

Sarwar.
I listened to a radio call in where someone called him the wrong name repeatedly, he was good natured about it!

DreamDancing · 25/04/2021 23:04

Yikes!
Apologies - should have read my post first.

@RunHobbitRun

I'm having a similar dilemma here in Wales. I live in a Labour/Conservative swing seat (typically retain 80% of the vote between them). I don't want Labour to retain control of the Senedd, nor do I want to vote for the Conservatives.

A vote for anyone else is just a small voice expressing displeasure at the status quo. We even have proportional representation for Senedd elections so even that hasn't helped the two party fight for a seat.

I hate being politically homeless.

I'm in Wales too and have exactly the same issue as you do, RunHobbitRun. It's politically pointless and I'm so disappointed that this is how the parties have been presented to the electorate.

Oh and we have the police force vote as well.

Quincie · 26/04/2021 08:24

Thinking about it, as most stuff is shipped into England, goods for N Ireland would go England (loads of issues if coming from EU), cross Scotland /England border, more holdups, Scotland, then the issue they have now with having to cross the Irish Sea EU border, Stranraer to Larne, but it wouldn't be the same as it would be Scotland /Irish Sea EU border, and Scotland presumably would have different customs and transfer of goods rules than England / then into N Ireland OMG - it would probably take months for anything to get through. But as with Brexit it is being conveniently ignored by Scottish Nats.

Saoirse82 · 27/04/2021 01:26

Ive had to vote Sinn Fein to try and keep the DUP out. I don't like Sinn Fein but the DUP are, in my view, hideous! So YANBU

If like me, you are facing a decision in the upcoming Scottish Election, then maybe this guide will help.

That’s really interesting surprised at how high conservative scored. I do wonder if Alba and snp might form some sort of partnership post election even although it’s denied.

ImNotDaveGorman · 06/05/2021 07:33

All the best to everyone voting today ❤️.
Thank you for a bit of debate.

Just voted both votes Conservative.

My partner asked if I was going to put Alba, but I just don't believe that Sturgeon or Salmond should be anywhere near that decision.

Also after reading this yesterday, he seems to be gently pushing women under the bus.

There is exactly the same system in Scotland. Obviously you can vote for someone other than Labour/Cons for the regional list vote.
