Frumpy as...

Nigella's a cardigan fan and she never looks frumpy.

dudsville · 18/04/2021 20:58

The disparaging term "frumpy " implies we should all aim for sexy. It's OK to aim for sexy but it isn't the best thing to aim for, just a fine alternative.

eaglejulesk · 18/04/2021 21:03

Jesus christ! There's always one...

Proud to be that one! I would rather be me than someone who intentionally tries to put down those who don't conform to their sartorial standards. In my world people can wear whatever they like without judgement from me.

Foolintherain · 18/04/2021 21:06

I tell you what do look 'frumpy' those god awful mum jeans. Give me a nice pair of skinnies and a cardi any day.

ladybee28 · 18/04/2021 21:07

Reckon OP'll be back?

Or was this just a classic MN grenade before a quick dash to the microwave to grab the popcorn?

00100001 · 18/04/2021 21:08

@HeadNorth

In fairness to the OP, she did not specify the sex of the person wearing the cardigan, so why are posters leaping to assume it only refers to women? The be-cardiganed male is seldom presented as a sex God leading male figure, in my experience.
The word frumpy refers to women ergo the OP was talking about women.
Branleuse · 18/04/2021 21:08

so?

I dont think theyre always frumpy anyway, depends on your style and also your body shape. Cardis sometimes work better than a jumper with big boobs

Flibbitygibbit · 18/04/2021 21:10

I use a cardi as a top. Just saying

georgarina · 18/04/2021 21:13

I love them! They can look nice and not frumpy with a lacy cami top underneath

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 18/04/2021 21:13

@PuppyMonkey

😁👍

Nats1984 · 18/04/2021 21:19

Nah. I’m a hippie /Boho queen and my crocheted oversized knitted monstrosities look pure class over my denim hot pants or patchwork mini dresses. I suspect I’m not ‘on trend ‘ though by about 30 years or so. I’d not be without them on a beach in the evening though :)

Alsohuman · 18/04/2021 21:20

@Doghead

And hoodies. Also frumpy.
Now you’re getting ridiculous - teenage boys look frumpy? Seriously?
KizzyWayfarer · 18/04/2021 21:22

I was going to ask what is Not Frumpy then, but suspect PuppyMonkey has hit the nail on the head!

SwimBaby · 18/04/2021 21:31

The OP posted once, with a completely objective opinion, four hours ago.
Probably, they're still coming back, very smug yet not very snug (how can you be without one of the best inventions in the history of clothes) reading all the comments.

Doghead · 18/04/2021 21:37

Another frumper
The rest of the outfit - not frumpy.

The cardigan - frumpy.

Doghead · 18/04/2021 21:39

"Now you’re getting ridiculous - teenage boys look frumpy? Seriously?"

OK. I'll rephrase. Hoodies on women - frumpy.

GhostCurry · 18/04/2021 21:45

@thedevilinablackdress

You are funny. It's like saying trousers are frumpy. Or t-shirts.
Lol at all the posters getting defensive about cardigans 🙄 they aren’t the same as trousers or tshirts. There are exceptions but cardigans really have to fight hard not to be frumpy.
LemonSherbetFancies · 18/04/2021 21:49

Believe it or not I have got a life so can't sit around eagerly lapping up every single reply and feeling like I have been very naughty to express an opinion. Sorry to disappoint.

Not much of a life if you start stupid threads on the internet for shits and giggles.
LunaNorth · 18/04/2021 22:07

Here is that well-known frump Marilyn Monroe in my dream cardi.

Half the threads here are for shits and giggles.

Sandgrown1970 · 18/04/2021 22:16

It’s not the models/celebrities that are frumpy.

It’s the cardigans

They’d all look less frumpy sans cardigan. They all look more frumpy than they would without with the cardigans on.

It’s really pointless posting pictures of “hot” women wearing frumpy cardigans. A) most women in the street aren’t 20 year old fashion models/Marilyn Monroe/Jennifer Anniston B) it’s only proving a point that the cardigan is a pretty blah/boring/unflattering item of clothing even on the most stunning of women.

Are THEY frumpy in themselves? No.

Are the CARDIGANS? Yes.

bellropes · 18/04/2021 22:39

I wear cardigans and I love looking frumpy. It's great, because men leave you alone. There's nothing worse than being stalked around Tesco by some creep who wants to chat you up because you've gone out without your man repellant cardigan on 😄
