Princess Anne the only female behind the hearse

While the funeral was beautiful, I couldn’t help feeling annoyed that Princess Anne was the only female to walk behind the hearse. Surely all the grandchildren could have been included. Instead we see Beatrice, Eugenie and Zara tottering along on high heels. It would have been so much better to see them take an equal place with the men.

Andrew was just one of a crowd.

This is part of the problem though. He isn't 'just one of a crowd'. He was a senior Royal in European Royalty. If Royalty weren't considered to be above the rest of us, yesterday's funeral wouldn't have been anything like it was.

Peregrina · 18/04/2021 19:07

Lord Lucan disappeared. He's probably dead now anyway.

Andylion · 18/04/2021 19:07

At a friend's (non military) funeral, one of his daughters was a pallbearer. She insisted on doing it.

I was a pallbearer for my grandmother almost 30 years ago. There were not enough men at the funeral and the funeral director had said they could provide them. I thought that was ridiculous to have a stranger so I volunteered. My sister also volunteered. We were in the middle and I assume the four men at the ends, my dad, brother, uncle, and cousin, actually did most of the carrying.

Anne1958 · 18/04/2021 19:08

No idea why Tim Lawrence there except to balance things out so that Princess margaret's son had someone to couple up with !

Or it could be that he was in the procession as he’d been in the Navy just as Prince Phillip had been and at one time he’d been an Equerry to the Queen. It’s how he met Princess Anne.

ElphabaTheGreen · 18/04/2021 19:15

@Laggartha

I do wish somebody would explain why Anne was the only female in the procession, and why Peter Phillips was chosen to keep William and Harry apart, and who those two strange men at the back were, and why Viscount Linley and Lord Lucan weren't included in the walking group.
God, RTFT!

Anne actually has a penis.

Peter drugged W&H prior to the procession because their conkers at dawn was getting out of hand.

Linley and Lucan came under cover as Ant and Dec so No-one Would Get Suspicious.

It was ALL explained upthread! And verified in the Daily Mail

JudgeJ · 18/04/2021 19:15

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing

Traditionally with royalty it’s only the males. Princess Anne has done this before - I think at the QMs funeral.

However I did think they probably only put her there to ensure Prince Andrew wasn’t in the front row!

She would have been there because she's the second eldest child and allegedly the one he liked best, she had every right to be there, nothing to do with Andrew.
Nith · 18/04/2021 19:20

I presumed it was DOEs 4 children then William and Harry due to being the heir (Charles) children and then Peter (the only male cousin of similar age) in the middle incase William lamped Harry.

Surely no-one seriously believed for one moment that William and Harry were going to have a fight mid-procession? It's obvious that Peter was there absolutely in his own right as eldest and beloved grandchild.

Frazzled2207 · 18/04/2021 19:23

According to the daily Fail it was william’s idea to put Peter in the middle as he is eldest. The brothers were at least seen chatting in a friendly manner afterwards

PhillipPhillop · 18/04/2021 19:29

The Order of Precedence is fascinating. I didn't realise it was different if the royal males were in attendance. Interesting that granddaughters of former sovereigns take precedence over granddaughters of the current sovereign etc

Thank you for explaining so clearly!

Because Anne insisted on being there despite women not being allowed traditionally because she couldn't give a shite.

Answer to second question is because heirs to the throne are discretely kept apart so that their protection can adequately protect them without them all being take out with no heir to the throne left.

FreekStar · 18/04/2021 19:35

*Haven't two of those only recently given birth?

Sure, let's make the new mums march... That won't at all be uncomfortable for them.*

Eugenie had her baby back in February 8 weeks ago, and Zara in March- at least 3 weeks ago! Most mums are able to walk a short distance- giving birth doesn't render one unable to walk in most cases!

Himself and Shergar are happy as Lords in a remote part of Kerry.

Women are not included. How many times do you need to be told that? This is the royal family we're talking about. Hardly the bastions of woke.
Isthereaduckinthehouse · 18/04/2021 19:45

When Charles and William are within bullet range, they need to mix them up a bit. Nothing really to do with rank. Anne is dispensible and irrelevant. She also couldn't care less. She knows that she's not a target. You can't have every possible heir to the throne within 3 seconds shooting range.

I did wonder why it wasn’t more ‘one in, all in’ with the grandchildren. Why just the three oldest?

And why was Princess Anne’s husband the only spouse? Why not Camilla and Sophie? Earl of Snowdon was a random inclusion to outsiders as well, but presumably PP’s wishes.

I wondered why they didn’t just keep it to the four children (ie Charles, Anne, Andrew, Edward) as all us plebs will do is speculate wildly (and probably inaccurately).

Camilla and Sophie were there!

Yes, but we’re talking about who did/didn’t walk behind the hearse. Why was Anne’s the only spouse to walk was what I’m saying.[/quote]
The Earl of Snowdon is Anne's son, not her spouse. He inherited the title on the death of Anne's ex husband Anthony Armstrong Jones.

Isthereaduckinthehouse · 18/04/2021 19:50

It's amusing how you're coming up with all these proposed reasons for separating Charles, William and Harry. It's security. If someone wanted to take out all of them, it's more difficult if they're not next to each other where one bullet might kill two birds. Have you never heard of JFK? Assasination attempts are often made. They have adapted how they appear in public in response to threats. I'm sure that Charles would have loved to have walked arm in arm with both his sons. It wouldn't be allowed though.

mammmamia · 18/04/2021 19:53

The Earl of Snowden is not Anne’s son, he’s Princess Margaret’s son.

Isthereaduckinthehouse · 18/04/2021 19:53

For goodness sake, at my employer, more than 50% from one department are not allowed on the same flight! We're not in any way critical to life unless you consider accumulating wealth for clients to be critical.

I read somewhere it was only men who had served in the military specified in the plans but princess Anne wasn't having any of that and her siblings agreed she should walk. No idea if this is true. Princess Anne's husband is ex Royal Navy none of the other spouses are ex military.

Covid rules, which the funeral abided by, wouldn’t allow Charles to walk arm in arm with them. Anything else is conjecture.
