To not put a tv in an Airbnb?

PutTheCakeDOWN · 16/04/2021 14:34

Pondering going find the Airbnb route. There’s no tv in the place we’d do it and it would be a right faff putting one in. I don’t watch loads of tv, and I know lots of people watch on tablets etc anyway.

For context, it’s a couples/single adult space in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

YANBU - tv not needed
YABU - get a tv you cheapskate

And as I've said - you're competing with all the properties in the area that have TVs - so people will just book those instead.

You won't be able to gauge how well you're doing and can potentially do - without something so fundamental.

Kaptain · 16/04/2021 16:40

As for the external hole-drilling, the Sky engineer (or whoever they'd subcontracted) did that at our house. They must have to do it all the time?

Kaptain · 16/04/2021 16:41

@GreenSlide

Maybe the best compromise would be to get a TV that only broadcasts BBC4. That way the plebs can't enjoy themselves too much by watching Coronation Street or Homes under the Hammer.

"I think as a family"

She said couples or singles!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 16/04/2021 16:42

I don't understand why people talk about large black screen. Tv in airbnb needn't be large.

Gwenhwyfar · 16/04/2021 16:42

I think it's not a problem as long as it's clear for guests in advance. Take it or leave it.

1Morewineplease · 16/04/2021 16:42

Marketing the room as an 'away from it all' experience would work for walkers etc... during the summer months but when it's dark, a tv might be useful, particularly if it's raining too.

MerryMarigold · 16/04/2021 16:43

Don't know if this has been said as cba to read full thread, but

Put in a TV with DVD player, rather than requiring TV reception. We went to place like this with our family. We knew in advance and it was fab. We actually played games and watched the odd DVD.

@PutTheCakeDOWN

No the internet is shit.

Not the responses I was hoping for 😂😂 thank you though, very helpful!

It’s quite a remote area, popular for walking and it’s lakeside so very picturesque. I think it would be a shame to sit in and watch The Bill but horses got courses!

I could always try it and see if people mention it...? As long as it’s super clear on the description?

Perhaps try not to be so pre judging of people as a host?

People who have walked 20 miles or so on a glorious day may well want to relax and watch some TV in the evening. Why the barb?

Whatatodooo1 · 16/04/2021 16:50

Honestly laughing away at a lot of the replies. I would say 90 percent of our guests are surfers, hikers and cyclists as the area caters for all these activities. So because they aren't big on going out and more into getting up early , I find that it's these ppl who chill in the Airbnb in the evenings and watch TV or use the Internet. You can be both a lover of nature and TV Shock

Kaptain · 16/04/2021 16:50

Sorry, just realised - there's rubbish internet as well? That's a No from me!

Whatatodooo1 · 16/04/2021 16:57

Op, we don't have an aerial or anything like that , it's just a smart TV with Netflix so no need for aerial.

Woodspritely · 16/04/2021 16:59

Also - surely letting your kids give you an extra hour or two in bed while they watch a movie is completely normal on holiday? I vote yes to a tv!

Aye - if you buy sky!

Yes but it needs to be plugged into something other than a power socket surely?

No kids. My own screaming darlings are enough thanks 😂

Er, surely you need good wi-fi for Netflix?

VettiyaIruken · 16/04/2021 17:04

If you have one then those who want it will use it and those that don't, won't.
If you don't have one then that first group won't book so you'd lose out on potential customers.

Kaptain · 16/04/2021 17:05

With bad wi-fi and no TV I don't think your ratings are going to be very good...

MerryMarigold · 16/04/2021 17:07

The issue is that if you're married to my DH, it WILL go on, like it or not. If there isn't one, or only DVDs, we will be forced to agree on movies and he will not be tempted to 'zone out'.

OP, I would just make the place a bit cheaper to compete and take it from there, but it is up to you of course.

speakout · 16/04/2021 17:07

I would be more concerned about bad wifi.
I would expect a rental propery to have decent wifi.

halcyondays · 16/04/2021 17:08

In the grand scheme of setting up and running an AirBnB, sticking in a telly isn’t that much of a faff is it?

PutTheCakeDOWN · 16/04/2021 17:08

Ours is something like 4? But we can get Netflix. The BT people don’t believe me but we do!

As long as you are clear about this in the description it is fine. It's part of a rural, get-away-from-it-alll package.
alreadytaken · 16/04/2021 17:09

I'd want a weather forecast before setting off. If I walk a lot I might want to relax and recover in the evening by watching something mindless. If the weather was very good it might not be used - but I probably wouldnt book a place without tv and definitely not if the internet was also rubbish..
