What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)

31 year old here. I've just been told by a Gen Z girl that skinny jeans are now uncool. When I asked her what is seen as "cool", she replied with wide legged or mum/boyfriend jeans. Both look horrific on me - like a sack of potatoes! I've had a browse on ASOS and indeed, it showcases tall, lithe models donning high wasted, 90s style mum jeans with a turned up hem.

Please comfort me Mumsnet, and tell me that my 15 year staple is still acceptable?!

44 and I’m still wearing bootcut jeans

I'm still wearing them at 61 Smile

Are denim joggers those AWFUL jeans that were elasticated around the ankle? I was asked out by a lad I really fancied. When he turned up he was wearing a pair of those and I got instant ick :o

Saw a guy wearing some the other day and had to fight the urge to run him over to save him from himself!

So can someone please tell me.....is it an 80's throw back or 90's at the moment?

Not that it matters, neither were great from a fashion POV but at least I didnt engage in the 90's horrors of boot cuts and cuban heels.

I've not seen a man look good in skinnies.

I think its because [GENERALISATION ALERT] the men that tend to wear them are younger and (ironically) have skinnier legs. So they look top heavy, wider at the top than the bottom.

I can remember flares and wide legs from the 70s and the horror of people still wearing them in the 80s.
I'm going to be one of those old people that carried on wearing flares until they get back in fashion again in 15 years!

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 14/04/2021 07:24

There was a funny article in the Guardian about Gen Z laughing at Millenials and their skinny jeans and side partings Grin whilst Gen X watches it all from the side lines smoking a cigarette and laughing at both

It’s just funny to see Millenisls are now told they are old snd past it, move over, Gen Z is in town!

As a gen X I guess I am so old nobody cares what I wear anyway Wink

ILikeTheWineNotTheLabel · 14/04/2021 07:30

Skinny jeans are, and always were, a crime against eyes.

IvysPoison · 14/04/2021 07:31

@mooonstone

It’s acceptable but doesn’t mean it’s fashionable

At 31 you’re old enough to know fashion trends come and go. As someone that’s gen z, it’s hilarious seeing millennials process that they’re uncool

On the other hand, some of us look at what Gen Z are wearing these days, thinking they're cool and original, and find it hilarious that it's actually all just recycled trends that most of us did years ago.
SpringtimeSummertime · 14/04/2021 07:33

@gottenhaitch

They can pry my skinny jeans and side parting from my cold, dead hands.
😂😂😂
beginningoftheend · 14/04/2021 07:35

Surely it is right though that parents wear different clothes to their teenagers? When 70s retro was the rage for me, I would have been Hmm if my mum had also started wearing the same style.

What I'm saying is - if you are 35, a 15 year old should think you're uncool. Doesn't mean you really are!

goldielockdown2 · 14/04/2021 07:36

They're not bang on trend as a fashion statement themselves, but they aren't so dated that they would be conspicuous to wear. They are just a practical cut of trousers which is why they are still sold alongside all the other ones every season. I wear flares, boot cut, wide leg, mom, dad, girlfriend/boyfriend, slim, skinny. Sometimes it's the rise or the leg length that makes the difference in seeming current or classic.

YukoandHiro · 14/04/2021 07:36

I'm 38 and wore all these fashions the first time round. I definitely can't pull the off now.

How does a high waisted straight leg look on you? A good compromise that looks good on anyone over 30 I think

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 14/04/2021 07:37

@gottenhaitch

I refuse to take fashion advice from kids who look like this.

YukoandHiro · 14/04/2021 07:39

And yes, wide leg or even big flares in the UK are deeply impractical: you either have ankle swingers or rising damp.

God awful memories of my university days in the rainy city coming back to me.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 14/04/2021 07:40

Mom jeans are ugly. I haven't seen anyone looking good in them.

Skinny jeans 4eva.

Notoriouslynotnotious · 14/04/2021 07:44

The teens can drag their wide legs/mum jeans through the puddles of Ireland all they want. I’ve done my stint of that back in the 90s like some school experiment on capillary action so I’m sticking with skinnies. I’m fat they have always looked shit on me anyway so what’s another few years.

SpringtimeSummertime · 14/04/2021 07:52

I know absolutely nothing about fashion from 2000 onwards but I’m an ‘expert’ when it comes to ‘80s and ‘90s fashion - the years I spent actually caring what was on trend...

Let me tell you this Gen Z, the stuff designers are churning out now is the absolute worst ‘80s and ‘90s with ‘70s smock dresses thrown in for good measure! Wouldn’t have been seen dead in at the time, what my Mum wore! Puff sleeves? Just No.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/04/2021 07:53

I get tangled up in wide legged jeans. They sort of wrap themselves round each other.

I also hate high waisted clothes, they make my tummy sore unless I buy them so big they fall down.

However, given the sad state of my wardrobe, thanks to this thread, I now know what I'm aiming at.

GiveMeTulipsfromAmsterdam · 14/04/2021 07:56

I love skinny jeans being lucky to have super slim legs. However, I am fat around the middle and so baggy jeans of any type make me look even fatter.

teaandcustardcreamsx · 14/04/2021 07:57

Im Gen Z and I’m obsessed with skinny jeans! I hate mum/boyfriend jeans Grin though most of my friends wear flares and the like, I’ve stuck to skinny jeans throughout!
