What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)

31 year old here. I've just been told by a Gen Z girl that skinny jeans are now uncool. When I asked her what is seen as "cool", she replied with wide legged or mum/boyfriend jeans. Both look horrific on me - like a sack of potatoes! I've had a browse on ASOS and indeed, it showcases tall, lithe models donning high wasted, 90s style mum jeans with a turned up hem.

Please comfort me Mumsnet, and tell me that my 15 year staple is still acceptable?!

I'm continuing with skinny jeans, also have a slouchey style and straight legs too

Diva66 · 15/04/2021 19:03

Lockdown. Nobody fitting into any skinny jeans 😂

Shell4429 · 15/04/2021 19:09

@Nighthogs

I can honestly say I am absolutely bewildered that a hair parting is a trend
Don’t you remember the awful side parting of around 15 years ago which seemed to be about an inch above the ear? Then the zigzag parting!
Muncher75 · 15/04/2021 19:23

I had a mild panic attack this week when I attempted to buy my staple Levi’s super skinny 710 jeans to discover out of stock everywhere.... I managed to find them on Very with a low stock message on them. I resisted bulk buying and I’m hoping they haven’t discontinued them.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 15/04/2021 19:27

So pleased with myself - I’m 53 and just chose and bought my 21yr old daughter a pair of jeans for her BD which she totally loved - high waist, button front, easy flare. Cool.

Isaidnope · 15/04/2021 19:30

I wear skinny and mum jeans, I like both styles. My DH always wears skinny jeans, I can’t imagine him in anything else!

SmokedDuck · 15/04/2021 19:34

@ladsholiday

Just a thought (mainly because this is all over tiktok) but it's like someone somewhere has started this fight over partings and jeans.. as if to make us buy new stuff etc etc.

Call me cynical!

That's how fashion always works. It was the same when skinny jeans came in.

They've really had quite a long run and dominated to such an extent that I think many people are happy to have other options.

Greensmurf1 · 15/04/2021 19:40

Good grief. Next they'll be saying double denim worn with a mullet hair-do is très chic.

LadyWithLapdog · 15/04/2021 20:07

www.whowhatwear.co.uk/amp/double-denim-2021 Double denim did you say? Right on cue.

LadyWithLapdog · 15/04/2021 20:09

twentytwowords.com/the-mullet-is-apparently-coming-back-as-the-hairstyle-of-2021/ and here’s the mullet for 2021.

Someone’s messing with our heads.

The first thing my London based daughter does when she visits is to check out what's in my wardrobe. For a wedding she went to last year, she pinched my shoes and pashmina so I must be doing something right. We both wear skinnies (though I now have a pair of straight jeans) and at 5ft 3 and a smidgen over 8 stone I like to think I look good in them. I have my hair in a high side parting. My favourite YouTubers are ModelMouth (thanks for the tip, daughter) and Trinny. Oh. Forgot to say. I'm nearly 70....Grin

Ddot · 15/04/2021 20:47

Sod it, if you like em wear em. I like to wear really tight jeans with a micro mini

browneyes77 · 15/04/2021 21:21

Well seeing as plenty of shops still sell skinny jeans, as far as I’m concerned that means they are not “out” of trend.

I’m 43 and all of my jeans are skinny jeans.
And I couldn’t care less what some Gen Z thinks, because I look damn good in them Grin

ballroompink · 15/04/2021 21:26

I don't mind as they've never beeny favourite! I'm tallish and slim BUT with short legs and am pear shaped and in skinnies and flat shoes I do indeed feel like a parsnip. I didn't wear jeans for years during the skinny's heyday in the mid-late 2000s. But now it feels like there are so many styles out there and there's much more to choose from. I like barrel legs and boyfriend/girlfriend styles but I just bought a pair of low rise skinnies and they do actually look ok.

Those black trousers that are flared that teens are wearing now absolutely remind me of the trousers girls used to wear to school in the late 90s Grin And I remember my mum going on about my clothes as a teen in the 90s (cord flares, velvet jacket etc.) being straight out of the 70s. What goes around comes around!

LolaSmiles · 15/04/2021 21:26

I love skinny jeans and what's all this about side partings?
Are side partings now unfashionable?

TheBullfinch · 15/04/2021 21:28

I've seen lots of people wearing wide culotte shaped jeans recently which looked better than I expected.

I remember the times I wore wide leg and boot cut jeans/trousers well as I used to trip over them while going up stairs quite regularly. There's just too much material.

Its nice to see a change though and I'm glad that I'll be able to hide my muscley calves now.

Angrywife · 15/04/2021 21:33

I will not give up the skinnys!
I've lived through the 80s & 90s and have zero desire to wear that hideous unattractive fashion a second time!

godmum56 · 15/04/2021 21:36

@SheepPixie

Skinny jeans might be out but I’m not giving them up! They suit my size and body shape, the plus outside of work my comfy wardrobe is skinnies tucked into stable/country boots and a hoodie. It’s what I’m comfortable in so that’s what I’ll wear.

lionsandwhales · 15/04/2021 21:40

Oh poop. Finally got round to buying two new pairs of skinny jeans to replace my knackered pairs last week.
Oh what to do. I am doomed and will be ridiculed. Perhaps dig out my shell suit and start a new retrend.

lionsandwhales · 15/04/2021 21:44

Why do we can them pairs if jeans? We don't say a pair of jumpers or pair of tshirts. Shoes is another matter, that is defintion of a pair.

Cloglover · 15/04/2021 21:45

Just do what I have been doing for the last 15 years, put your fingers in your ears and go 'lalalalalalala'. I'm still in bootleg. Skinny jeans never happened to me. I'm gonna be in my 70s before what I wear is back in fashion. 😂😂😅

felineflutter · 15/04/2021 21:50

I am loving my new girlfriend jeans. So glad to get rid of my last pair of worn out skinnies but I have put on over a stone in a year so...

2Rebecca · 15/04/2021 21:54

I love skinny jeans. My on the knee boots go over them and I can kid myself that as a late 50s woman in desperate need of a hair cut and to get back to the gym I look like a rock chick, or at least vaguely desirable, maybe, to someone, somewhere who is also ageing and hasn't been out much so isn't that fussy....

chicken12 · 15/04/2021 22:04

you can still get them on asos ps you should not have a side parting if your going the gen z

BurbageBrook · 15/04/2021 22:11

Similar age to you OP and no way am I giving them up. Nope. Not happening.
