What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)

31 year old here. I've just been told by a Gen Z girl that skinny jeans are now uncool. When I asked her what is seen as "cool", she replied with wide legged or mum/boyfriend jeans. Both look horrific on me - like a sack of potatoes! I've had a browse on ASOS and indeed, it showcases tall, lithe models donning high wasted, 90s style mum jeans with a turned up hem.

Please comfort me Mumsnet, and tell me that my 15 year staple is still acceptable?!

Giving birth doesn't help though, for most people.

JaneJeffer · 15/04/2021 16:09

I think Irene from H&A has been reading this thread. She posted yesterday that she won't be giving up her skinny jeans.

PurpleDaisies · 15/04/2021 16:16

What’s h and a?

starrybee · 15/04/2021 17:20

I look AWFUL in anything except skinny jeans - I'd rather look nice but 'outdated' than a frumpy mess!

purplebunny2012 · 15/04/2021 17:26

Who cares if they're out of fashion. They are what I wear and feel comfortable in

Zoejj77 · 15/04/2021 17:46

I have a mum bod so it took me a few attempts to get the right ‘mom jeans’ without looking crazy mumsy.
If only wear skinny jeans to work as I agree that look is a bit dated

Bertiebiscuit · 15/04/2021 17:46

Skinny jeans uncomfortable for most women and look terrible - good riddance to that particular abomination I say

Easilyannoyed · 15/04/2021 17:46

Well if we're all still wearing skinnies then it ain't outta fashion!! Who gives a shit what a vacuous fashion magazine, brainless designer, social media "influencer" (insert ironic eye roll), or Gen Z girl tells you. If you look good in 'em, wear 'em!

OverweightPidgeon · 15/04/2021 17:47

I’ve gone back to bootleg jeans after getting so fed up of wrestling my feet out of the legs of skinny jeans when I take them off.

EmpressSuiko · 15/04/2021 17:49

32 and I absolutely detest skinny jeans! Mom jeans are my saviours! 😂

RampantIvy · 15/04/2021 18:02

Loads of people still wear skinny jeans. I would say that of the jeans styles I have seen today in town that more people wear skinny jeans than any other style.

I have ditched all of mine except for a pair of White Stuff jeggings. I now have a pair of M and S Sophia Straight leg (which are a high waisted slim straight leg, but not very high waisted on me as I am tall), a pair of girlfriend jeans from Sainsburys that are really comfortable and a very well worn pair of straight leg jeans from Matalan.

I hope that jeans manufacturers will continue to offer a wide choice of styles and rises as women are so many different shapes and sizes. I, for one, cannot bear low rise jeans. Even high rise are mid rise on me.

Luddite26 · 15/04/2021 18:03

Oh god gen x here when i was mum age 90s to 00s i wore a lot of bootleg jeans when i got skinnies in the 10s dd gen y bought me some boot legs and said you always used to wear these.
Nooooo i can't go back there.
I used to pinch brothers 501s mid 80s but didn't wear boyfriend jeans after that.
Last year i did start wearing coloured jeans quite proudly looking like my gran with her coloured trousers from the 60s which she still wore in the 00s so i guess i fortunately have got to the age where you can stop following fashion. I suppose that's why i get all my jeans and clothes from m n s now!

Luddite26 · 15/04/2021 18:04

If my gen z daughter started telling me what was fashionable i would really think i was ready for the old folks home.

ladsholiday · 15/04/2021 18:06

Ive notice pretty much all shops now 'name' they're jean styles like topshop, I think topshop was the first? I hope that means they're keeping all the different styles.

Makes sense.

I think skinnies are a staple, so not completely 'fashionable' but won't really ever go out. All these wide legs etc will die out again before they return again etc

afaloren · 15/04/2021 18:06

Gen Z can take my skinny jeans and my side parting from my cold dead corpse!

coogee · 15/04/2021 18:08

I love low-rise. It suits me. Jeans, trousers, shorts, skirts, keep fit stuff etc. The only high-rise I own are a pair of waterproof overtrousers.

ladsholiday · 15/04/2021 18:08

Just a thought (mainly because this is all over tiktok) but it's like someone somewhere has started this fight over partings and jeans.. as if to make us buy new stuff etc etc.

Call me cynical!

ladsholiday · 15/04/2021 18:12

These are trending styles on ASOS which is where a lot of gen z but their stuff. Two thoughts: 1. skinny trousers/jeans are still very much there and selling. 2. When I was at school those flares would be tragically too short.

Finally!!!!!! I've been waiting for years for skinny jeans to go out been wearing mens but imma stock up on decent jeans now

Luddite26 · 15/04/2021 18:13

Actually i'm not wearing skinny jeans i have just ate too much over this last miserable winter lockdown and my straight legs have got very tight!

Kokosrieksts · 15/04/2021 18:17

Ha-ha-ha, love this. I’m 33 and wear skinny jeans. To my own surprise I bought 2 pairs of mum jeans and they look great, but I can’t style them with my boots so they have to wait for summer.
It feels weird to wear them, because as a teenager I would laugh at “mum jeans” and now probably being laughed at by teenagers for wearing my skinny ones.

keeptheaspidistra · 15/04/2021 18:24

I feel your pain. I struggled immensely when boot leg jeans were phased out of fashion

MiMong · 15/04/2021 18:29

It's all explained here 😆

I still wear my skinny jeans and side part though 💁‍♀️

doadeer · 15/04/2021 18:39

I love mum jeans! I do wear skinny but only leather legging or coated black. Skinny jeans are so uncomfortable for me these days

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/04/2021 18:42

I honestly doubt that people who wear things that are 'in' want me to wear the same as them.

I shop in Joules, Seasalt, Jigsaw and John Lewis so I've long come to terms with being able to wear what I like and what suits me.
