What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)

31 year old here. I've just been told by a Gen Z girl that skinny jeans are now uncool. When I asked her what is seen as "cool", she replied with wide legged or mum/boyfriend jeans. Both look horrific on me - like a sack of potatoes! I've had a browse on ASOS and indeed, it showcases tall, lithe models donning high wasted, 90s style mum jeans with a turned up hem.

Please comfort me Mumsnet, and tell me that my 15 year staple is still acceptable?!

@RobboCop

My Czech mate and her friends always seem to look pretty good - stylish but classic. I could never imagine her in dungarees or mum jeans etc, she always looks like she could be a bond girl or somebody from a classic film.
I have a Czech friend. She’s a gardener so quite often in dungarees or cargo’s. I can safely say she looks bloody fantastic. Like a Bond girl undercover maybe.

I blame Harry for flares

Skinny jeans and side parts are unacceptable now 😅

I have both and have become that boomer millennial that does not understand the kids these days.

TheRogueApostrophe · 15/04/2021 07:31

Is this how bootcut are worn now? It looks wrong to me with the flare so high. Back in the day my boot cuts were down to the ground! I like the look and feel of skinnies. As long as they still sell them in the shops I'll be buying them. I also have a side parting (of course - I'm 43!).

Yep, ankle flappers (aka cropped bootcut) are it

Ah well, luckily for me I care not about what's in fashion so I'll just continue on as I am! I couldn't rock ankle flappers.

Skinny jeans haven’t been ‘in’ for years... a good few years ago things started to move from skinnies to mom jeans and straight leg jeans and more recently wide leg jeans and flares.

Personally I think a lot of people who think they suit skinny jeans might actually suit other jeans better - they aren’t that flattering on a lot of people (sorry!) but many women have just got so used to wearing them/have a very set style (skinny jeans, converse, stripy top or skinny jeans, Chelsea boots, jumper...) and don’t know how to style different shapes.

TheKeatingFive · 15/04/2021 08:48

There’s an assumption that people care what’s ‘in’.

Plenty couldn’t give a shit.

Most people don’t give a s**t!
thenameshastings · 15/04/2021 09:57

@TheRogueApostrophe yes everything seems to be ankle grazing now. When I was at school 15 years ago ‘ankle swingers’ were seen as the absolute height of uncool

Soothes · 15/04/2021 13:05

Jeans are a problem in a way other clothes aren't.

I grew up when "drainpipes" were the thing and flares absolutely were not . Then we had mum jeans (although we didn't call them that, did they get the name becuase they're what your mum wore?!) Then cargo trousers and boot cuts. Straight leg have always, to me, been what M&S sells. I think they're frumpy on everyone, but clearly I am clueless.

To me, now, mum jeans look very dated and I couldn't wear them, but wide leg are good, very flattering for me with a narrow waist and chunky thighs.

I like skinnys and they're still my go to for a slightly dressy, casual evening out, but I know I look like a 50yo, not anyone at the cutting edge of fashion Grin

Soothes · 15/04/2021 13:07

I tried on some wide leg jeans for the first time in ages yesterday. They were certainly not made to be ankle swingers. I'm 5'7" and I sent them back becuase they were too long, even to be worn as I expected, almost down to the ground.

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 15/04/2021 13:46

I am a shallow old person who cares about what’s in Grin

Not because I think I can fool anyone into thinking I am younger than I am, but sometimes I get excited by big changes in style/silhouette

I remember making the style change from boot cuts with fitted tops to skinny jeans and long/loose tops and starting to wear the skinnies inside ankle boots. Prob around 2008/2009

I am only now ditching that style for a different silhouette, with bigger/wider bottoms and shorter yet baggy/wide tops. Some with big bell/puff sleeves

It’s actually a nice look, IMO

It feels like a big change in the fashion silhouette

Usually I am about 2/3 years behind the curve Grin (ie, once I cotton onto something it’s already on its way out Wink)

May still wear my skinnies, but am actually excited to mix it all up a bit.

Am bored with skinnies/ankle boots look I guess

I am slightly fascinated by how marketing filters into my brain and makes me decide on these changes Grin

An0n0n0n · 15/04/2021 13:55

Mom jeans are only flattering if you aren't actually a mom Grin

StopCryingYourHeartOut · 15/04/2021 13:57

I've finally thrown my skinny jeans out and going back to bootcut/flares. I like them the best and think they look good on me.
Dont care if theyre not fashionable.

MrsVeryTired · 15/04/2021 14:01

I like my skinnies but also like slim, and love cargo's whether they are baggy or skinny, pockets! So useful.
Usually have a ageing rock chick vibe so I think I can stick with my skinnies and not care Grin

I'm a mum and I look great in mum jeans.

Love my lightening strike ones

Skinnies are the best for a night out in my opinion. What are people wearing instead of those? (Obviously despite there being a pandemic!)

thenameshastings · 15/04/2021 15:31

I agree skinny jeans for nights out and the ‘jeans and a nice top’ combination, mom jeans seem too casual

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 15/04/2021 15:47

“Skinny Jeans and a nice top” ... the uniform of the middle aged woman going to the pub GrinWine

42 year old, been in mum/mom jeans for a few years since living in maternity jeans for a few years before that! Well chuffed my mom jeans are now fashionable, even if temporary Grin Never liked skinnies even when I had the figure for them, wide legged jeans are so much more comfortable! The early noughties styles while I was at uni were ace.

Loving all the early 90s stuff around at the moment.

I’m not a mom. They look awful on me. It depends on your shape, not whether you’ve given birth.
