What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)

31 year old here. I've just been told by a Gen Z girl that skinny jeans are now uncool. When I asked her what is seen as "cool", she replied with wide legged or mum/boyfriend jeans. Both look horrific on me - like a sack of potatoes! I've had a browse on ASOS and indeed, it showcases tall, lithe models donning high wasted, 90s style mum jeans with a turned up hem.

Please comfort me Mumsnet, and tell me that my 15 year staple is still acceptable?!

@Nighthogs

I remember the wife legged ones from early 2000. Anyone remember how dirty and ripped the bottom of them got? Shudder!
My grandmother stapled my hems so that they didn't drag. I removed the staples so she then sewed them.

I felt like such a tit as everyone else had puddle draggers and mine were swinging mid ankle Blush

JaneJeffer · 14/04/2021 13:29

I always think skinny jeans are more evident on blokes in a weird way. Maybe it's just me but I wonder if it's because women have always worn things like leggings and yoga pants but men haven't really.
I remember my DB telling my DF back in the 70's that he wasn't with it because he wore drainpipes when flares were in! I think skinnies looks better on men who have thinner legs. DS1 looks like David Banner mid-transformation in his because he has muscular legs.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 14/04/2021 13:50

I remember how long it took me to adopt skinnies though. I hated them at first because I was so used to my bootcut / straight leg.

I thought they made me look huge and could only cope if I had long tops.

Much the same with switching from small to oversized sunglasses. I remember thinking Victoria beckham looked ridiculous. Then 18months later I was wearing skinnies and huge sunglasses. 🤷‍♀️

That's how fashion works to turn fashion forward into mainstream.

DastardlytheFriendlyMutt · 14/04/2021 14:10

Yeah skinny jeans have gone the way of the dodo. My gen Z sister told me a few years ago they were unacceptable. I'm struggling as my body type does not.lend it's self well to my body shape. Also 31. Not impressed.

Pogmaasal · 14/04/2021 14:15

Skinny jeans are awful for anyone with a slightly dodgy back so in that sense its a good thing!

fairburn · 14/04/2021 14:18

@TheKeatingFive

Skinnies ain’t going nowhere. Relax Grin
Exactly. If ASOS is selling them, teens are still buying them
Lemonyfuckit · 14/04/2021 14:31

I am 39, and was (tentatively) celebrating learning that skinny jeans are now out, as I am short and a little stocky, so I don't think skinny jeans are that flattering on me and I find them really uncomfortable. I have a pair of mum jeans on order and was sort of hoping the baggier look would be both comfortable and flattering, but who am I kidding, they're probably going to be even worse and total frumpsville on anyone not a lithe gen Z or whatever they are nowShockConfused
I think I need to resign myself that I need thinner legs, not baggier jeans, to actually look good in jeans....

BornOnTwelthNight · 14/04/2021 14:32

I just wear what I like, don’t care whether it’s in fashion or not. I much prefer slim/ straight legged over skinnies much more comfortable and suit me better.

One thing I am hoping that does make a comeback though, is low rise jeans.
High rise are not made for short people. I’m stupidly short in the torso. And high or even mid rise Jeans are just too high, they look ridiculous on me!

Low rise are bloody hard to find now and have been for a while, so have resorted to stocking up on Top Shop Baxter jeans from eBay.

This.. when I was a uni all my jeans had 'rising damp' and ripped bottoms from trailing around on the ground.
@gottenhaitch What's wrong with a side parting? Good lord, what have I missed?!
This too...
god clearly I'm so ancient and out of date. But a side parting suits me so I'm sticking with it, sod 'em.

I’m intrigued @Pogmaasal please explain!
Iheartbaby · 14/04/2021 14:44

@lljkk

thanks for the warning -- last time skinny jeans went of style we had a good 15 years I couldn't buy them anywhere. I vowed to stock up on them before that happened again so I could keep wearing them as much as I like for (ever really). If I get too fat and never get to wear them then so be it, I can spare the expense. It's a risk worth taking to avoid stupid flares No.Matter.What.

Any suggestions where to buy?
Is it too late to find them in Primark?
Maybe I should have a blitz thru lots of local charity shops first this weekend.

Dorethy Perkins have really good ones, i think I’m going to buy some more as well
Swordfish1 · 14/04/2021 15:48

I now feel so old! I had no idea.
I live in skinny jeans. And I have a side parting.
I really don't think those baggy high waisted things are going to look at all good on me.

Can we all just agree to keep wearing our skinnies proudly and to hell with fashion!

and I'm with @BornOnTwelthNight
Bring back low rise jeans! High rise make my tummy look 6 times bigger and my hips 6 times wider than they are.

I've just been sat in a busy part of town having lunch, watching probably hundreds of people walk past me. I remembered this thread, and would say that probably 75% of the women walking past were wearing skinny or very slim-fitting trousers. Exceptions being the elderly and occasional teens. I really don't think skinnies are over.

toconclude · 14/04/2021 16:01

In my case, fat legs Grin

Exhausted4ever · 14/04/2021 16:07

I am fat as fuck and wearing any jeans that aren't skinny/jeggings just make my legs look even fatter. And I want stretchy denim as I want material that moves over my curves, not stiff denim that restricts me

Userg1234 · 14/04/2021 16:17

Can you get her to tell men's clothing retailers. I'm a mature large man....skinny and tailored every fucking thing. Even for companies where I am the target market

Cocolapew · 14/04/2021 16:31

I stopped wearing jeans about 18 months ago and now live in ankle length trousers with decent pockets. The only jeans I'm slightly tempted by would be vingtage 501s.
All men in skinny jeans look like Gru.

Skinnys are out but I don't care and won't stop wearing them.

What brands do you go for? I find trouser choice overwhelming and only jeans properly comfy.

Those that do will be fashion forward (digging my flares out as we speakGrin)
Cocolapew · 14/04/2021 18:36

@HaveringWavering no particular one shop, but there's usually an elasticated waist involved Grin. I've ones from H&M, Bon Marche, M&S, Next. Lots now have elastic at the back of the waistband so are really comfy.

Glittertwins · 14/04/2021 18:50

I've got quite big legs, skinny look okay as they are meant to be clingy but other cuts really don't work for me at all - too big around the waist, too tight at thighs and bizarre flare out around the calves. I find buying any form of trousers quite hard!!

TheGoogleMum · 14/04/2021 18:57

Oh good I dont like skinny jeans, it's been annoying when I've needed a new pair but there's nothing but skinny jeans available! I think they look better on slim people with longer legs...

BeastOfBODMAS · 14/04/2021 19:17

I’ve lost lots of weight and am not far off fitting into my carefully hoarded skinnies from my late teens which have loads of life left in them.

Up yours, young people! Grin
