What's happened to skinny jeans??? (light hearted)

31 year old here. I've just been told by a Gen Z girl that skinny jeans are now uncool. When I asked her what is seen as "cool", she replied with wide legged or mum/boyfriend jeans. Both look horrific on me - like a sack of potatoes! I've had a browse on ASOS and indeed, it showcases tall, lithe models donning high wasted, 90s style mum jeans with a turned up hem.

Please comfort me Mumsnet, and tell me that my 15 year staple is still acceptable?!
@PyongyangKipperbang, let's hang out. One of the proudest moments of my life was when my daughter asked for DMs for Christmas last year. I haven't really strayed too far clothing-wise in 30 years either - it's what I like. I start muttering darkly when I go into Urban Outfitters with my daughter - "I hope they know these flowery dresses and band t shirts aren't an ORIGINAL look" etc etc. I feel like I have time travelled to the late eighties when we go there.
Urban Outfitters is my daughter's place of worship. It's just so expensive. £42 quid for a jumper that looks like one I might have bought for a five at a jumble sale in the 80s. I wish I'd kept it all so she could've just worn that!

@BogRollBOGOF

I resisted skinnies and stuck to my boot legs until the thigh rub killed the inner seams. I'm pear shaped so look more balanced with a boot cut (although straight leg is pretty close to it on my thighs!) Fortunately I'm muscular enough that I look fairly shapely still. I struggled with the logistics of getting calves and jeans into a pair of boots. Calves alone are a challenge!

My main criteria is waists. I've always been generous in the glutemus maximus, so hipsters were always a bit brutal to sit in, but by the time I've sized a skinny to clear my thighs, there's spare inches of pant viewing gallery at the back (please never let thongs return, I shunned the garotting bastards first time round) I need a high waist and good bum coverage.

I have noticed that my elderly knee length stripey socks are creeping back into use as legs are loosening. They were great against flappy legs in the late 90s Grin

I've got bad news for you, thongs are back and tinier than ever. Literal triangles of elastic cord.
Soothes · 14/04/2021 10:05

I resisted skinny jeans for ages, my thighs being my widest part, but eventually decided they're not too bad if balanced with chunky boots. Still don't wear them with shoes/trainers/sandals though.

I can't get my head round "mum" jeans. I wore them first time round, so I just feel dated in them.

Wide leg are a good option for my shape though, so that's exciting!

I thought I’d be pleased as I really like boyfriend jeans, I’m in my 50’s. The slightly more bohemian flare niw makes me look deranged.

I have a pair of baggy utility’s jeans that look like a 1940’s factory worker ( bought for Goodwood Revival). They were cool when everyone was in skinnies. Now I look tragic and try hard.

elsaesmeralda · 14/04/2021 10:16

This thread makes me feel ancient and I'm only 31. I have a middle part and wear mom jeans, I'm obviously getting laughed at 😆

samthebordercollie · 14/04/2021 11:01

I'm 55, tall and slim and won't give up my skinny jeans although my DD says I should try Mom jeans. I think you just get used to a certain style, skinnies are practical when you do a lot of physical work.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 14/04/2021 11:28

I love my skinny jeans, not least because they tuck neatly into wellies/yard boots without acres of spare fabric flapping about.

If my skinny jeans set me aside from Millenials/Gen Zs then thank fuck for that!

booksandnooks · 14/04/2021 11:38

@Mummy1608

Flares are back in too. Personally I love them, it's like I'm wearing two skirts, swish swish

TheOrigRights · 14/04/2021 11:57

When skinnies first came out I wasn't keen at all.
I am a runner and have muscular legs. Unless the jeans are good quality denim then I look like I'm wearing running tights.
I look fine in running tights, but they are for running, not for wearing out and about.
When they became the fashion and everyone was wearing them it didn't seem so odd.

I'm glad flares have come back again though.

lljkk · 14/04/2021 12:11

thanks for the warning -- last time skinny jeans went of style we had a good 15 years I couldn't buy them anywhere. I vowed to stock up on them before that happened again so I could keep wearing them as much as I like for (ever really). If I get too fat and never get to wear them then so be it, I can spare the expense. It's a risk worth taking to avoid stupid flares No.Matter.What.

Any suggestions where to buy?
Is it too late to find them in Primark?
Maybe I should have a blitz thru lots of local charity shops first this weekend.

LadyJaye · 14/04/2021 12:14

What IS it with flares?

They're like the cockroaches of fashion - will occasionally scuttle out of view when the lights are turned on, but always lurking in the background and practically indestructible...

PurpleDaisies · 14/04/2021 12:16

Skinnies are still everywhere at the moment @lljkk.

lljkk · 14/04/2021 12:17

Are mom jeans ankle bashers?

I am fine wearing those, but my legs get cold, so I need full length in cold weather. Also, I roll them up to avoid getting caught in the cycle chain. But tuck them in if cold.

I can't figure out what is a "mom jean" feature other than blue jean + above the ankleness. Are they relatively high waist?

I'm a real panic about avoiding the Fing flares. Until end of time.

lljkk · 14/04/2021 12:18

Thanks PurpleDaisies. I'm still stocking up :).
I can afford it at charity shop prices.

lljkk · 14/04/2021 12:19

I gathered that ultra low waist bottoms that fall off people with hips were also creeping back into fashion. Another stupid 'fashion' idea. Ok, will stop babbling now.

Ellpellwood · 14/04/2021 12:31

"Mom" jeans aren't necessarily ankle grazing. But the ones in shops will be now, as well as being lighter washes, as we're in spring.

They're basically both high-waisted and a bit loose. Think Levi's 501.

CleverCatty · 14/04/2021 12:34

I've done mom jeans (they're ok). I have some nice jeans which aren't skinny but are 'stretch'.

I don't care if skinny jeans are in fashion or not or if I should be wearing what's in. I have some highwaisted skinnies too.

Im a runner too, muscly legs but still wear skinnies. They look fine.
Ellpellwood · 14/04/2021 12:41

It always makes me laugh when people say skinnies make legs look like triangles/parsnips. So... leg-shaped then?

fairburn · 14/04/2021 12:47

@Lalliella

By the way you can still buy skinny jeans in good old M&S
You can buy skinnies literally everywhere.
TheKeatingFive · 14/04/2021 12:50

Skinnies ain’t going nowhere. Relax Grin

Jerania · 14/04/2021 12:56

This is supposed to be the joy of not being a teen/twenty something. You just 'frankly don't give a shit' about silly things like latest fashion. I love being in my forties now and just wearing what I bloody well like to wear!!

Cardboardeaux · 14/04/2021 12:56

It's funny how fashions come back - I remember mom jeans from the 90s (I think they were called 'tapered'). They looked awful then and are just as bad now!

OrangeRug · 14/04/2021 13:00

Each to their own but I hate mum/boyfriend jeans so I will just be uncool in my skinnies! Although I wear leggings most of the time tbf.
