The term "The Queen of England"

DynamoKev · 13/04/2021 12:31

In view of recent events this term has been appearing again.

My theory is that it originates from the USA - does anyone else agree or have a different view about where it started/is from?

Do you know how much revenue the royal family brings into the UK?
The sovereign grant is a damned sight smaller than when they provide for the treasury.

No we don’t know, the fact of the matter is, there’s no evidence they make any difference. It’s likely we’d get more tourists if all those palaces were empty. The Palace of Versailles in France a perfect example.....and the revenue from the crown estates would revert back to us if they were no longer there.

But it’s not much of a basis anyway, keeping a bloated monarchy on with its huge costs just because of tourism. As if all those tourists flock to London just because of the royal family, Hmm

Always with the Versailles
Youseethethingis · 13/04/2021 19:05

The Queen of England? Meh.
Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth? Rage. Utter rage. Grin

MyRight · 13/04/2021 19:08

@pourqouimoi

nice to live in a country where a symbol of inequality and hereditary privilege is apparently the main tourist draw Hmm
Yes I do feel privileged to be able to live in the UK. Inequality is everywhere, I know not of a utopian country. Do you?
fluffysocks89 · 13/04/2021 19:12

Always with the Versailles

That’s because it’s a perfect example. You can’t get away from the fact. How royalists must hate it, because they can’t argue with facts. Grin

StoneofDestiny · 13/04/2021 19:18

Gosh there is a lot of hate for the Royal Family on here. Such a shame as they attract so much tourism.
Who’d want to visit London if we had a president?

That old chestnut.
You do realise that the royals vacate the palaces when tourists are around, or close their palace to visitors when they are at home?

You do realise that tourists flock to castles and palaces everywhere regardless of their being a man arch there - Versailles in France? The Hermitage in Russia? Plus all the other places of Tsars and Tsarinas. Paris is a magnet for Tourists - no Royals. Rome, likewise. Places across the USA. Take away the Royals, tourists will still flock to the UK.

MysteriousMonkey · 13/04/2021 19:20

I am English but would prefer if she were referred to as something else, since I'd abolish the monarchy given a chance Grin

So you don’t know anything about the sovereign grant or revenue generated but you know it won’t have any evidenced impact on uk economy? You basically look at them only for their ‘privilege’ not for what joy or interest they bring to people all over the world. HmmConfused
StoneofDestiny · 13/04/2021 19:21

It's tosh - I'm well travelled, but never visited anywhere because they had a monarchy. Likewise, tourists aren't flocking to the UK in the off chance of meeting a royal.

LovePoppy · 13/04/2021 19:22

@Changechangychange

What drives me crazy is that lots of people here in Canada call her the Queen of England and have zero idea how a constitutional monarchy works

This! People used to say this to me all the time when I lived in Canada! Hellooo, she’s yours too, Canadians!

But is she though?

She might be on our money, but she’s very little to do with us.

You seem very knowledgable. Who owns these wonderful buildings? I’m not sure the USA has many castles to be honest

fluffysocks89 · 13/04/2021 19:27

The rest of the world aren’t paying for them, but really, I find it bizarre that people should get joy from gawping at a family who are no better than them, just there by the accident of birth. How do you mean “ I know nothing about the sovereign grant”..... not much to know really is there. But I do know a presidency would be a hell of a lot cheaper, if based on Ireland’s presidency. The money saved could give genuine “joy” then couldn’t it, maybe build a new hospital or school perhaps and much more......

fluffysocks89 · 13/04/2021 19:28

Can't you use another ex Royal palace in Europe because I'm sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo with Versaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaailles. I've been on MN too long. The French wish they still had a royal family so they have to make do with ours and the Monaco lot. www.parismatch.com/
derxa · 13/04/2021 19:31

*boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooored

MyRight · 13/04/2021 19:35

Yes there is lots to know if you want to make educated opinions.
You may find it bizarre but that’s your opinion and I respect that. Some of us have lived in terrible places and had terrible experiences. This ‘bloated monarchy’ is a fairytale I will never experience but I do love the pomp and glory. You can shoot me for that but I love it.

LagunaBubbles · 13/04/2021 19:36

Because it is? She's English. She comes from a very long line of English Royals, she's born and lived English...do you think that being queen of The Bahamas is in anyway as important?

No but surely the rest of the countries in this union are?

MyRight · 13/04/2021 19:44

The Queen's full name is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary. Her full official title is Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith.

SenecaFallsRedux · 13/04/2021 19:47

Americans call us all English.

Not the millions upon millions of us who have Scottish surnames, we don't.

Changechangychange · 13/04/2021 19:48

@derxa Will Prague Castle do? 8.5m visitors a year, according to Google. No Royal family in residence.

We could even compare Hampton Court Palace (former royal palace, 4.7m visitors), with Windsor Castle (current royal palace, 1.65m visitors). Or Buckingham Palace, with a mere 50000 visitors.

fluffysocks89 · 13/04/2021 19:49

I've been on MN too long. The French wish they still had a royal family so they have to make do with ours and the Monaco lot.

I think they find it bizarre and I’m sure they wouldn’t want the likes of Andrew as a possible contender to the throne. But that’s the thing with an unelected monarchy isn’t it, you’re stuck with whoever you get. How very democratic. Confused

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 13/04/2021 19:50

I do know a presidency would be a hell of a lot cheaper, if based on Ireland’s presidency.

Not so much so if based on America's, though.

(I have just been reading about how much Donald Trump and his family cost the USA taxpayers over four years.)

derxa · 13/04/2021 19:54

I think they find it bizarre and I’m sure they wouldn’t want the likes of Andrew as a possible contender to the throne Scandal is rife amongst French politicians. Sarcozy sentenced to jail. Mistresses etc. They love it.
