The term "The Queen of England"

In view of recent events this term has been appearing again.

My theory is that it originates from the USA - does anyone else agree or have a different view about where it started/is from?

What do Scottish letter boxes have on them?

All sorts of things. But post boxes have the Royal mail crown logo usually but not always with the initial of the monarch at the time the box was erected underneath. Just like the rest of the UK. And just like Ireland did (I presume they have changed them all since) but they painted theirs Green. I wonder what colour an Indepandant Scotland will paint its post boxes? Blue I suppose.

BTW did you know telephone boxes in Hull are painted white? They were never owned by the GPO and remained under council control. Not a lot of people know that.

A picture of a crown I think.
Bumberlee · 16/04/2021 20:12

Considering that wales and scotland want independence England is the Queen's truly. Queen of England is right.

Peregrina · 16/04/2021 20:14

She could still be Queen of Scotland and Wales, if that is what the people chose.

SenecaFallsRedux · 16/04/2021 20:26

Weren't some of the post boxes in Scotland vandalized in the 1950s because ER Ii had been put on them? So after that they just had a crown?

Considering that wales and scotland want independence

Two entirely different things. There may well be pro independence supporters that wasn't to retain the monarchy, and there are certainly unionists that don't.

I don't want independence. Why do people keep saying this
PrelovedWithValue · 16/04/2021 20:43

I don't want independence. Why do people keep saying this

Probably the same reason that some people say 'why do people...' when they mean 'why do some people...'. Or 'does anyone' eg 'does anyone live in Swindon?' Well yeah, lots of people. I don't know any of them though.

They know what they want to say, but don't get too caught up in the specifics.

Not all Scots want independence. It sends shivers down my spine.
PrelovedWithValue · 16/04/2021 21:17

I'm very aware that not all Scots want independence. I'm pretty sure the person that said Scotland and Wales want independence knows that too. It's a shortcut. An over-simplification.

As does the thought of being governed by the Tories forever down mine.

Do they

I thought the referendum in 2014 said differently

CayrolBaaaskin · 16/04/2021 22:07

Truefax she is not the queen of England since the union of the crowns

CayrolBaaaskin · 16/04/2021 22:10

Not all Scots want independence but hopefully a majority will soon. I certainly do. But either way it has nothing to do with the monarch who is queen of many other independent countries.

PrelovedWithValue · 16/04/2021 22:22

This isn't 2014, and things have changed a lot since then.

At this point, nobody really knows for sure what the majority of voters in Scotland would choose.

Bumberlee · 16/04/2021 22:27

Exactly, with brexit hinging on englands vote independence is even more at the forefront
Scots have a looong history of tension with the English monarchy.

Peregrina · 17/04/2021 08:43

So we need to wait a few weeks, to see how the Holyrood elections go.
