The term "The Queen of England"

DynamoKev · 13/04/2021 12:31

In view of recent events this term has been appearing again.

My theory is that it originates from the USA - does anyone else agree or have a different view about where it started/is from?

@PrelovedWithValue

Americans call us all English

As do some English people. I know, an Englishman once introduced me as 'also from England' when I was spending time in Israel. And was confused when I said (in my obviously Scottish accent) that I wasn't.

I've had English people get angry with me when I've pointed out that I'm not English.
Peregrina · 13/04/2021 21:47

I didn't think the Queen Mother was all that Scottish. Wasn't she born in Hertfordshire?

ohforarainyday · 13/04/2021 21:48

Henry Tudor got away with it because everyone else was dead and then murdered a shitload of people. This is not how it's portrayed in the history books. I wonder why? grin

Hehe.

My favourite Henry Tudor fact is that dealing with and eventually capturing and executing Perkin Warbeck (dude who pretended to be one of the Princes in the Tower) cost Henry Tudor the equivalent of ten million pounds.

But Lambert Simnel (those names!!), the other bloke who pretended to be a Prince in the Tower, actually got pardoned by Henry and got a job working in his kitchen, which is pretty trusting of Henry!

Conn Iggulden has a cracking novel series about the Wars of the Roses and creation of the Tudors. So much better than Phillipa Gregory.

It's so odd, isn't it! That guy said to me 'it's all the same'. Well, no, it really isn't. And it's completely baffling that they don't understand that.

MumUndone · 13/04/2021 22:17

Wtf are we meant to call her then? The whole bloody title every time?

StillCoughingandLaughing · 13/04/2021 22:19

That’s where he invented the cake Smile

@ZZTopGuitarSolo

Is there nothing that Americans are not to blame for?
Nigel Farage?
SenecaFallsRedux · 13/04/2021 22:20

There is also the interesting interplay of Salic law in all this. When Victoria became Queen, her uncle who was after her in the line of succession to the British throne, became King of Hanover because Hanover barred women from its throne.

fluffysocks89 · 13/04/2021 22:22

The figure you suggest is more in keeping with the revenue they generate rather than what is spent on them.
It wouldn’t really work with different people being voted in, where’s the heritage in that

It’s a myth they help with the economy. Why do people keep peddling that nonsense. They’d have us believe that tourists come purely because of them. It suits their purpose to have us believe that. The RF cost the country an absolute fortune. Without them all the profits from the crown estates would come to us in their entirety.

Just call her the Queen. Even in the US, that always means Elizabeth. Any other queen you have to name.

Lol. I’m remembering how angry some English tennis fans got with Andy Murray for not supporting the England football team, when he’d joked with Tim Henman that he would be supporting ‘anyone but England’.

I Why would he support the England team as a Scot?

True. It's similar to someone who went to the University of Georgia, but who lives in Florida, not supporting the University of Florida football team no matter whom they are playing. Sports rivalries run deep the world over.

If you call her "the Queen" in Ireland you'll have your arse handed to you.

Peregrina · 13/04/2021 23:09

Andy Murray is of course British when he wins and Scottish when he loses.

Everyone I know calls her the Queen. The only Irish person I've heard getting pissy about this was Alan Hughes on Ireland!

Changechangychange · 14/04/2021 00:16

the Hanoverians wouldn’t have got anywhere near the British throne if Catholics hadn’t been barred from the line of succession

Derxa’s ignoring facts right now, @StillCoughingandLaughing Wink

pallisers · 14/04/2021 00:19

depends on the age ime. DB referenced "the queen" in a speech at a family event in 2018 and he was hauled over the coals by many many people - the queen of where?

JaneJeffer · 14/04/2021 00:23

the queen of where?
That's exactly what Alan Hughes said. Maybe it's a thing in some circles. I've personally never heard anyone say it.

pallisers · 14/04/2021 00:26

it was an 85th birthday party and many people came up to him and said"the queen of where?" I can see why they would think like that tbh.

pallisers · 14/04/2021 00:28

and on the "in some circles" thing. These were not republicans or anything similar it that was what was meant by "circles" quite the opposite.

LagunaBubbles · 14/04/2021 00:35

don't understand why people are 'enraged' by this though. Sure, if you are a pendant its a bit irritating when people get things wrong - but 'rage' really?

You would understand if you were Scottish and she is referred to as the Queen of England.

JaneJeffer · 14/04/2021 00:38

Everyone would just assume you were speaking of Dr. Rory O’Neill, our official Queen 👑🥰 #panti
RustyBear · 14/04/2021 00:50

So what happens if Scotland gains independence? Would they become a republic, or would they keep the Queen?
If so, that would basically be a return to the position between 1603, when James VI of Scotland became King of England as well, which united the Crowns, and the Acts of Union of 1707, which united the two nations and Parliaments. She would then be Queen of Scotland (or, more traditionally, Queen of Scots) and Queen of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
