To buy a Nissan Qashqai

Need a new, bigger car.

Love the Qashqai, but have heard not great things re reliability. It's what I would ideally buy.

It's that or a Kia Sportage.

Am I really setting myself up for a lot of bills with a Nissan? Or should I still to the more boring but more reliable Kia (which has the balance of a 7 year warranty)?

Ive just downsized from a Tucson to a fiesta. I miss my Tucson so much, had it from new, never had any issues (apart from when it was part of the lot that were recalled because of an arm on something in 2017). But with children who no longer go anywhere with me I couldn’t justify the size and cost. but cannot recommend a Tucson enough. I had a Juke prior to that and never had any issues with it, but a colleague had a Qashqi and had no end of issues with it.

I've had a 2016 Tucson for a couple of years, absolutely love it. Loads of legroom in the back, large boot and I love driving it. Go for a full spec one if you buy one.
DH's minor grumble is that my steering is light. That's the best he can come up with.

Former 14 plate n tec QQ owner here. We had untold issues and caused huge amounts of stress. The dealership were awful to deal with and it cost us a fortune. Now have a 70 plate tucson and its an absolute dream, the drive is uncomplicated, reliable, safe and comfortable. The service from the dealership has also been impeccable.

@AlexaRain I have a t - roc (69 plate) and is honestly the nicest car I have driven but the boot is small had to buy a new pram (pram fit with space for shopping easily in my focus before) and leg room isn't great in the back but is lovely to drive.

Sorry, another 14 QQ owner and much as I hate to say it (because I do like the car) it’s just been so unreliable and I wouldn’t recommend. I’ve never had a car have so many problems. The latest one was electrical and ended up with the part being sent off for repair, a 3 week turnaround time, a £600+ bill, and no guarantee this wouldn’t happen again in another year or so! The mechanic said that QQs have too many things that could go wrong with it. So much as I really love the electrics, reversing cameras etc, they are only good when they work.
Thank goodness for my old, battered Ford that keeps on going. 4th Ford and will definitely be getting another.

So yes I have a 16 plate QQ
I'm not a car person but it's my favourite car if the ones I've owned -
VW Polo
Ford Focus
Ford C Max
And now this ...

I love it - easy to drive , cheap to run , much cheaper to service than the Ford
More comfortable
Great boot for all my stuff
I like it as a driver and as a rear sitting passenger

The only thing I don't like about it is the wee silly horn noise

We downsized from a Volvo XC90 to a Hyundai Tucson and love it. It handles really well.
We have 3 Hyundais on the drive now, I absolutely love Korean cars, (and actually most things about Korea Smile).

Thank you. We are too old for prams now. I have 3 x under 10s, they should be fine in the back.

I meant 2 x under 10s.

Unless it was a Freudian slip and I'd better rethink my prom comment 🤣

Have you looked at the Skoda karoq? I got my karoq sportline two weeks ago and I absolutely love it! My only issue is it isn't as nippy as my octavia vrs, but I did know this.
This is my third Skoda now and I've never had a problem.
I did switch to Jaguar for a while and was met with untold problems so went back to Skoda.

There’s a shortage of car computer chips so there is a huge delay on a lot of new cars.

Toyota is one of the only brands still in full production due to having a requirement of chips in storage.

See this is why I don't understand the small SUV segment whatsoever. I genuinely need help to understand why of all the cars in the family VW range, including the cheaper and brilliant Golf, someone would pick the T-Roc.

Surely your choice here is around perceived image? I don't think I'd ever want to buy a car that would "force" me into the market to buy a new pram, just to justify my choice of a car with much too small a boot for its proposition...well not unless it was a Porsche 911!

Worst car I ever had. Broke down several times on long journeys, had fuel injection issues that meant it was completely gutless for overtaking in general and in the end I hated driving it with the unreliability issues

We hired one on holiday 2 summers ago and hated it. Worst car dh has ever driven. Cramped, boot not big enough, nasty gearbox and the “you’re too close to something” warning beeps were insanely loud.

I think your comment was aimed at @Ashfordmum but my reason is that I like being a little higher up (as a short arse). I had golfs for years and agree they are great. To me, the T-roc is basically a golf with a higher seating position and that is the appeal.

The Kia is far less boring than the quashqai it’s actually a great car. Good size. Looks nice droves well not expensive to maintain

For the pp who doesn't understand the small SUV sector - whilst my DC have grown up the clumber of childhood has been replaced by arthritis and elderly parents. They are so much easier on the hips and knees.

I was very pleased with my 64 plate Qashqai till this winter, when I have had bills of over £1,000 for damage to cables under the car caused by foxes. The cables on the Qashqai are very accessible and apparently from 2014 onwards are coated with an environmentally friendly soy based coating which foxes find irresistible.

I believe there is a class action in America against Nissan by owners who have had huge repair bills due to animals damaging cables.

I have had chilli infused anti rodent tape wrapped round the cables, but am having to park my car in another road in case that isn’t enough to stop it as I just can’t afford any more bills. These are urban foxes so it is not just a problem if you live in the countryside.

I won’t be buying a Nissan again when I replace it.

Why buy VWs at all when there are much higher quality alternatives?

I would have said the same until recently, when lockdown caused my small children to grow into nearly adult sized ones.

We do a fair bit of driving/weekend trips away etc and an SUV just gives that bit more headspace and leg room in the back. Plus boot space as now we need 4 sets of luggage rather than being able to chuck in a few spare changes of kids clothes.

We’ll still go small rather than the really huge ones- we’re looking at a Hyundai Kona, or the new one based on the i20 chassis looks a nice size for us.

We have just bought a 2017 QQ. Have had it 6 months. It has already been back to the garage to have some sort of suspension springs replaced and a new rear view camera but hoping this was just unlucky! Although reading some of these replies maybe a sign of what lies ahead..

I do love the car though. It's high and spacious for us, and we went for the Tekna Plus auto version so has all of the bells and whistles.

Nothing to do with image. More to do with I hate driving large cars before the focus I preferred the higher driving position I had in the C-max. Hence going for the t-roc over the golf. The pram issue was an over sight on my part as I didn't even think to test it in the boot before I brought it.
