to ask how much you pay for gas and electricity a month?

4 adults living here plus one DD, only myself and DH pay anything towards rent/bills.

I’ve just had a bill just our gas usage alone which is close to 800 pound. That’s just from Jan this year to now! I am having a mini heart attack and absolutely dreading the electricity also! Our usual quarterly bills were around £700 for both (and even then I thought that was steep!)

Is this normal or should I be worried about a leak?!?

Ours is £114 for both. 3 bed terrace, 3 adults. It went up from £89, but we're using more than usual as working from home.

HowManyToes · 09/04/2021 20:21

My DD is £104 per month for both. Actual bill is always under that, I had the option to reduce the DD but I like to let a bit build up in the account for extra gas usage over the winter. Just me and DH in 3 bed detached house.

Justmoveonin · 09/04/2021 20:27

4 bed, 3 story 1930s house, just me and my son but I wfh so I’m here constantly

£120 a month for g&e combined. I’m frugal with the heating though and it only goes on for a few hours in the evening unless it’s unbearably cold

Pupster21 · 09/04/2021 20:29

£160 a month for 4 bed, 4 people

MrsMonkeyBear · 09/04/2021 20:33

3 bed ground floor flat. £74 a month for both. 2 adults, 2 children. Baths/showers daily, heating on a consistent 21⁰C during the day.

We've just had a new boiler/radiators installed as we had part of the titanic heating the house (Solid fuel back boiler) which was about as much use as a chocolate fire guard. It was costing around £800-1000 a year for coal and wood and chimney sweeping. In winter our electricity was about £140 a month over winter too from having electric radiators on to boost the heating.

dementedpixie · 09/04/2021 20:35

I pay £130 per month
I input readings every month and it tells me my actual usage. Last month I used £78 electricity and £62 gas.

A monthly amount doesn't tell the whole story as you may be under or overpaying.

P.s. 4 bed detached house in Scotland and its £52 gas not £62
PlanBea · 09/04/2021 20:37

We've just switched supplier and our new direct debit is £52 a month for 2 adults in a 4 bed detached house and both working from home. We're in a new build and south facing so get all the sun and none of the draughts!

VictoriaLudorum · 09/04/2021 20:40

Single person, large house.
95 per month for gas
65 per month for electricity
I normally get a 350 rebate for gas

FreeFallingFree · 09/04/2021 20:49

£800 for gas only, for a quarter is a lot. Is that an actual or estimated bill? Are your showers heated from the boiler? Have you had a major change in heating use ie have you all been working fro home when previously you were out during the day? What temp do you have the thermostat set at?

Assuming you're not living in some Tudor building with cracks in the walls, single glazing and the heating cranked up to 30 degrees that sounds like an administrative error, or a leak.

RouxLou81 · 09/04/2021 20:51

We pay £35 a month, two adults and a toddler, pre-lockdown this covered both elec and gas.

Lights are always turned off leaving a room. Heating related we don't shower every day and heating is not left on all day. Its controlled via Nest and Alexa. Perhaps an hour or even 30mins on then off

I recommend you check if your bill is based on actual or estimated reads. It might just have been grossly over-estimated during the colder winter months.

Also have you looked at your tariff recently? I'd recommend looking on Moneysavingexpert energy club if not for a better deal.

Last recommendation is to put Theromostatic Radiator Valves on your radiators if you dont have them or actively use them to regulate heat if you do, i.e. no need heating at full blast an unoccupied room.

Newpuppymummy · 09/04/2021 20:51

£75 in total in three bedroom house with one adult, three children. I have the heating on almost every day at the minute and use the drier at least once a day

Blueberry40 · 09/04/2021 20:57

About £160 a month for both with Bulb- 4 bedroom semi, 2 adults and one teen. Have the heating on a lot as I’m always cold!

lidoshuffle · 09/04/2021 20:58

Blimey, I must be hardy; £47 a month total for gas and electricity in a 3 bed house. I live alone, but have the heating blasting away working from home.

shivawn · 09/04/2021 21:12

3 bed house with 2 people. We have gas heating but never use it because we prefer the electric heating. Our shower is electric.

So gas is just for cooking, its a prepaid meter and we top up by 50 roughly every 3-4 months.

Electric bill is about 160 every 2 months. I thought that was high but seems okay after reading some of these figures!

Bagelsandbrie · 09/04/2021 21:14

£210 for both, 4 of us, one teenager and one 9 year old. All using gallons of streaming and gadgets and dryer going 2/3 times and a day and washer twice a day. It’s crazy but ds is disabled as am I and we have high washing needs.

BiBabbles · 09/04/2021 21:18

Last month we used ~£92, but that's with a very dodgy boiler that has to be run for hours before we can hope for showers and a few really cold days.

This is for a 4-bed with 7 people, including 2 night workers who keep to a night routine when off, so it's not uncommon for our home to have someone up and using electric 24/7.

hilariousnamehere · 09/04/2021 21:22

Mines gone up loads since covid - although I'm self employed and wfh, covid means actually being at home rather than out with clients or at my studio. 2 bed semi plus garden office, electrical shite plugged in constantly and an oil radiator in the office, I'm very extravagant with my heating - £104 a month. Higher than it used to be but not bad for what I use, I reckon.

melissasummerfield · 09/04/2021 21:35

We moved house from a 3 bed terrace to a bigger 3 bed detached last summer, bills in our old house were about 200 per month for both but now in this house its over £300! 2 adults and 3 children, heating on all the time through winter and working from home.

We were originally quoted 175 per month and this month they increased the dd and kindly informed us that we owe £1200!

Reinventinganna · 09/04/2021 21:44

We don’t have gas but 5 bed just electric is £40 and about £50 a month oil.

MrsPworkingmummy · 09/04/2021 21:48

6 bedroom large victorian end of terraced. 2 adults and 2 children. Currently pay £124, but due to increase to £225. Our thermostat is set to 18.5 so the heating is on the vast majority of the time.

Nutrigrainygoodness · 09/04/2021 21:49

My gas and electric bill for the last quarter nov-march was £434. Family of 3.
Gas fire on everyday, central heating on loads too.
So it works out at £100 per month. Less in summer maybe £70.

murbblurb · 09/04/2021 21:49

What are your unit rates and standing charges? Is it a fixed rate tariff?

amy85 · 09/04/2021 21:50

My direct debit for both is £40...3 bed end terrace 2 year old house, 1 adult and 3 children...some of these figures are scary high

LoLo2020 · 09/04/2021 21:52

Three bedroom house, two adults and one child. Gas and electric combined is around £85 per month at the moment
