At a risk of being sent to the Tower, whilst I think it is sad that Prince Philip has died, am I alone in being amazed at the constant repetitive TV about his life.
It’s just going over snd over same old stuff. And I’d like to watch some normal TV !

IABU - YES
IANBU - NO

@Peregrina

When is the Masterchef final going to be on? I was looking forward to that and would have been quite happy for it to have been shunted off onto BBC2.
I would like to know this too! But I suspect it will be after the 8 days of National mourning 🙄
StoneofDestiny · 10/04/2021 18:30

Funny how noone complained about royal weddings being on tv all day, or World Trade Centre

You are really comparing the murder by terrorists of 2,996 people and the injury of 6,000 more to the natural death of one 99 year old man? Really?

Unbelievable and disrespectful on another scale entirely.

sonofbobandflo · 10/04/2021 18:54

The BBC are showing a video of a father and his two primary aged children, he took them to Buckingham Palace at 1am to leave flowers. What a ridiculous, ridiculous thing to do.

MrsBobDylan · 10/04/2021 19:06

All the radio station are playing sad music ('Who's going to drive you home tonight" "My heart will go on"). It is awful, torturous.

I met the DofE when he presented me with my gold award at the palace. He asked me where I did my expedition (Iceland) and then if I visited the geysers there. I said yes, which was only a half lie as I'd chosen to stay behind and snog a geezer on that day.

You seem really invested in this, Stone of Destiny. If the whole matter annoys you that much (which judging by your posts it does) I wonder why you are on here commenting again tonight? If it were a subject which hacked me off I would find something else to occupy my time.
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/04/2021 21:00

The World Trade centre was a seismic horrific event. Killing 1000’s. I remember the disbelief of watching it. That was absolutely worth all the media attention. It changed the world for ever.

And this is the death of a wealthy 99 year old guy.

Hardly comparable.

jessstan2 · 10/04/2021 21:04

I wouldn't compare them either. I wouldn't bother with comparisons to anything, frankly. The Duke dying is a big thing here in the UK so understandable that there is a lot of media coverage and tributes, etc. Personally, I find them very interesting, have already watched some twice. I understand not everyone feels the same in which case they don't have to engage. Whatever, this is not going to last for long and won't kill anyone.

jessstan2 · 10/04/2021 21:06

.......
Hee hee, you had the right idea Mrs Zimmerman. I hope he turned out to be a diamond geezer.

NeverBeenNormal · 10/04/2021 21:18

I bought a newspaper today to get the runners and riders for the Grand National - not as a souvenir of Prince Phillip's life in pictures.

And I enjoyed the ITV coverage. And I bet on the winner.

CathyorClaire · 10/04/2021 21:30

They also voluntarily pay taxes that they don't have to, and plenty of their assets make revenue for the country.

Not arsed if someone like the RF or not, but lots of lazy assumptions are tedious

Their assets were 'acquired' because their ancestors were the best at robbing and baroning. They turned most of them over to escape paying for the growing costs of government and those they didn't (the duchies of Cornwall and Lancaster) have become murky entities whose legal status varies according to what benefits their wallets most. The Sovereign Grant has been boosted to pay for repairs to BP and royal income has been cushioned against Covid incurred losses

They had tax breaks for decades before bowing to growing public disquiet only as recently as the 1990's. Monarch to monarch bequests are still free of inheritance tax and royal wills are still sealed

But yes. Lazy assumptions (and fed narratives) are tedious Hmm

HellonHeels · 10/04/2021 21:34

@Marchitectmummy

It's a significant death of a significant Royal, who lived a long and interesting life what do you really expect.

The repetition will be aimed at people like our family who do not watch TV for more than an hour a day. How much TV do you watch per day, sorry but whatever is on there would be dull in comparison to all thd other things life offers even in Covid times

StoneofDestiny · 10/04/2021 22:13

And how is bbc showing their regular program helping with all that?

Because the news was hijacked to only report on the totally expected death of a 99 year old and was used to spread blatant propaganda.

StoneofDestiny · 10/04/2021 22:14

keyring
Yes, I can read and use a keyboard while listening to music - amazing huh?

I am invested in it - my contribution to trying to redress the balance of all the bullshit royalist nonsense being pumped out elsewhere.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 11/04/2021 08:47

It’s fascinating really as their hasn’t been the need to invoke this ‘protocol’ for such a long time. I presume the last time would have been Churchill’s death?

I think the protocol is in need of some serious updating.

Having said that, I’ve enjoyed finding out so much about the Duke’s life but would have preferred it to be on just one channel.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 11/04/2021 09:06

I think it needs updating too. We live in the 2020’snit the 1950’s.

MarshaBradyo · 11/04/2021 09:09

Hopefully all the feedback will prompt questions on what to change.

Peregrina · 11/04/2021 09:34

The Queen Mother's death in 2002 would have been the last time.

Sooverthemill · 11/04/2021 09:58

Protocol invoked for any senior royal Diana, Queen Mother, Queen any of her children. I can't remember what happened for duke of Windsor. Churchill had a different protocol as he wasn't a member of the royal family but was a massive figure for my parents generation because of the War. I think Charles will change it once he is king

Sooverthemill · 11/04/2021 10:01

Yeah I checked, Churchill was in line with Gladstone etc. A big state affair for an important national figure. But although I was a child I don't recall non stop coverage except on day of funeral

Eleganz · 11/04/2021 10:01

Was on the BBC news website this morning and there is an article opining about Prince Philip's troubled childhood. Yes it was not very happy, but countless thousands of people go through similar each year without being born into the immense privilege of European royalty and marrying into the hugely wealthy and still quite powerful British royal family. Trying to make out Philip 'had it tough' as a child is pretty naff to be honest - all claims that the royals are "just like us" is pure spin and the BBC should not be engaging in it, sadly they seem to excel at it.

Peregrina · 11/04/2021 10:08

I imagine that there wasn't a lot of love in Prince Philips childhood, but that was how the aristocracy were anyway. Boys got shunted off to boarding school at 8 regardless

Peregrina · 11/04/2021 10:10

Diana's death gave the establishment a problem though, because she was no longer HRH. What they couldn't take away from her was that she was still the mother of a future king.

Piggywaspushed · 11/04/2021 10:19

I read that a lot of this protocol is actually recent(ish). Brought in by Edward the VII because he was shocked at the lack of fuss about Queen Victoria's death. He made immediate plans for his own state funeral so that it would be a proper occasion.

bonfireheart · 11/04/2021 10:20

Old man dies.
Old man with wife dies.
Old man who had a sad childhood and then got married dies.
Old man who had sad childhood but went on to do some nice stuff and marry a nice lady dies.

There, all done in one day.

randomer · 11/04/2021 10:39

@bonfireheart,I think you added too much info there.Wink
