Repetitive TV about Duke’s Death

Thisisnotreallymyname · 09/04/2021 18:37

At a risk of being sent to the Tower, whilst I think it is sad that Prince Philip has died, am I alone in being amazed at the constant repetitive TV about his life.
It’s just going over snd over same old stuff. And I’d like to watch some normal TV !

IANBU - NO

Imagine it happening years ago when we just had a few channels. Freeview and sky exist and most of us have the internet to stream tv online. YABU.

cateycloggs · 10/04/2021 17:17

Snugglypiggy, my father was slightly younger than the DofE, probably experienced similar to yours in WW2 , died much younger than the DofE, probably due to being working class. Definitely had mixed feelings about the royal family, was very politically aware, could be sentimental, in other words a complex human being.

I understand and respect those who found comfort in the Radio2 output, I listened briefly, decided not for me and switched it off as I am about to switch off Radio 3 broadcasting a religious service. That was a change of programme in the schedule not a removal of a channel. But, and this is my point, my complaint and many others as you may not be aware is that the BBC totally removed 2 channels that play various repeats for 2 days with no notice and with no explanation so far.

cateycloggs · 10/04/2021 17:18

OOps, should have said father was older not younger than the DofE.

TempsPerdu · 10/04/2021 17:19

Funny how noone complained about royal weddings being on tv all day

I did. We actually booked a weekend in a remote part of the the Lake District in April 2012 to avoid the royal wedding. As for the WTC comment...

kingat · 10/04/2021 17:22

You completely ignored my questions, but complain about my luck of understanding. Its bizarre.

Or 2011, as it turns out. Goes to show how interested I was! Grin

Can you really not see the difference between Diana dying in those circumstances and a 99 year old man? It’s not shocking for the latter is it - Or are you expecting him to live forever.

Even so shocking news demanding a lot of coverage, which is understandable, the simultaneous broadcast with same content and changed music on the radio for days is unnecessary. The BBC now knows that many feel this way.

kingat · 10/04/2021 17:49

But again, when the Queen dies at 105 it wont be shocking either. Do you want bbc to play disco on radio then?

KeflavikAirport · 10/04/2021 17:53

Whyever not? There is a significant non royalist monarchy especially among younger people. We are tax payers and license fee payers too and we should be catered to on the state-funded channels.

Exactly.

When the Queen dies there’ll be no shortage of coverage.

KeflavikAirport · 10/04/2021 17:56

Monarchy > minority that should read!

.......
It isn't for several days though, it was yesterday and there were plenty of other channels that had ordinary things on. There's nothing much on TV today about the Duke.

I don’t watch TV but radio still had changed music for PP today.

It is quite depressing really, nothing matters to people anymore

Cobblers!
I care about the fact NI is burning again and the Good Friday Agreement is likely to be binned, while our PM does nothing about it.
I care to know if Cameron and Sunak have been doing dirty deals
I care about Myanmar and the deaths there
I care that rampant racism of the Duke of Edinburgh is being passed off as 'gaffs'
I care that Britain is becoming more like North Korea by hijacking the media, enforcing 'mourning' on people, cultivating a personality cult and reinventing history around a privileged and pampered old man.
I care that this current government is inept, dishonest and corrupt
I care about my family, my neighbours, my fellow citizens far more than a man I've never met, didn't like what he said and has, dead or alive, added nothing to my life apart from relieving me of money to pay for his lavish lifestyle.
I care that the RHS, of which I am a member, tossed people out of gardens they had travelled to see, paid to get in, for no sane reason at all beyond the totally expected death of a 99 year old.

Utterly outrageous.

Agree with every word of this.

And you think that's because that was always the plan, rather than they realised how badly it went over and how the ratings collapsed?

Piggywaspushed · 10/04/2021 18:11

Where do I actually find what is really on? I just looked at the amended schedule in The RT and it says Celebrity Mastermind should be on now and it isn't.

It's not actually being able to find out what is on and when that is really beginning to irritate.

When people use swear words, I take it as a sign of limited vocabulary

It’s actually a sign of high intelligence.

When is the Masterchef final going to be on? I was looking forward to that and would have been quite happy for it to have been shunted off onto BBC2.

ShurelyNot · 10/04/2021 18:18

@sashagabadon

They are also obviously expecting people. Have Marshall’s and all sorts. Very respectful. Anyway getting the off train now.

Tell us, are you also planning on flouting the requests to stay away from the funeral next Saturday?

trappedsincesundaymorn · 10/04/2021 18:21

There still seems to be a lot of misunderstanding as to why people are/were complaining about the BBC coverage. It's not about showing the tributes et al, it was the fact that the same thing was shown at the same time and other channels were shut down. It's like Netflix showing the same thing on the majority of it's channels and shutting down others, because that's what the company deemed everybody who subscribes to it should watch.

And how is bbc showing their regular program helping with all that?
UnderHisAye · 10/04/2021 18:28

@kingat

But this is breaking news. Should there be some poll what is breaking news before it is broadcasted? Would you in all honesty be complainig when the Queen dies or if William died tomorrow?

And why can you just not watch something else on iPlayer or whatever instead of complaining?

You can only break news once! After that it's sheer repetition and talking head monotony.
