Thisisnotreallymyname · 09/04/2021 18:37

At a risk of being sent to the Tower, whilst I think it is sad that Prince Philip has died, am I alone in being amazed at the constant repetitive TV about his life.
It’s just going over snd over same old stuff. And I’d like to watch some normal TV !

IABU - YES
IANBU - NO

@Piggywaspushed

not playing footie in the street . . The horror.
Yes, well. We weren't talking nice leafy suburbs/estates. Think of inner cities/slums with no green space at all.

What's wrong with wanting everyone to have access to green spaces?

Onthedowns · 10/04/2021 14:36

Exactly most sensible quote. My great grandfather was the same and rightly so its not acceptable

Peregrina · 10/04/2021 14:39

His early life may have been financially fairly privileged, but there doesn't seem to have been anyone much considering his emotional well being, so in that sense he wasn't privileged.

JustJustWhy · 10/04/2021 14:48

@CatalinaCasesolver

It's annoying but it's protocol.

I work in the civil service and we aren't even allowed to tweet at the moment.

"...aren't even allowed..." How chilling.
ilovecarbs90 · 10/04/2021 14:49

You do all realise the broadcasters and newspapers/websites are covering this because the general public want to know about it?

This is the death of a senior royal, it was hardly going to be a quick five minute news story.

If no one was watching it, clicking the stories or buying the papers about the royals, the press wouldn't give it so much attention. But the fact is, a very large number of the public are interested and do want to know about it. And that means £££ for the news companies.

It's like when people say 'why was that story about so and so repeatedly covered and not x story'. Because the second story is not generating interest among the public, and therefore not making the news organisations any money.

Pinkyavocado · 10/04/2021 14:50

I found his life fascinating and really enjoyed all the stuff yesterday. It’s a bit much today though as it’s so repetitive.

jessstan2 · 10/04/2021 14:51

There isn't much on about him today.

I too found it all very interesting. I love history and this is history in the making.

Except viewing figures dropped 60% and the BBC was overwhelmed with complaints.

Chickoletta · 10/04/2021 14:56

I’ve watched quite a lot of it and found it interesting. He had an amazing life and made a major contribution to the culture of our country.

However, I don’t understand why they cancelled BBC1 and 2 to show the same programmes. I don’t watch very much scheduled TV these days but cutting both the Masterchef Final and Gardener’s World was just too much...!

For information to anyone going on about DOE racism -
He was a product of his time

So was Enoch Powell, should we excuse his bigotry as well?

There's a huge difference between covering a news story, and broadcasting wall to wall propaganda.

The low ratings and high number of complaints suggests the general public is not interested in this scale of coverage.

No the viewing figures dropped markedly.

I missed PP's Rivers of Blood speech.
trappedsincesundaymorn · 10/04/2021 15:07

You also missed the point.

The viewing figures would suggest otherwise: www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/prince-philip-death-bbc-ratings-b1829504.html

justsotiredallthetime · 10/04/2021 15:10

Eurgh some of these comments. I'm deeply saddened by Prince Philips death and have enjoyed the latest coverage. He deserves the respect and dignity after his complete devotion to the Queen and our country.

duvetdreaming · 10/04/2021 15:14

@Livingtothefull

Here is the link if you wish to complain to the BBC about the coverage: www.bbc.co.uk/contact/death-duke-of-edinburgh-tv-coverage/#/Notification

The more I think about this the angrier I get. 127K people dead due to Covid over the last year...that's huge number of grieving family members. In the context of what has happened to so many of us, this blanket coverage on a Royal Family member who passed away at the end of a long privileged life is just so insensitive and tone deaf, it is inexcusable.

You be angry about that, people keep going on about how many people died of COVID and forget those of us who have lost multiple family members not to COVID. 4 family deaths in 2021, none COVID so they don't matter do they ? Angry

Well that's the most ridiculous piece of whataboutery I've seen this week. Hmm

Yes they are sad too

But it's OK to say what about the people who died from COVID when talking about PP dying?

Okay then.

Cobblers - he only died yesterday. The Race Relations Act was passed in 1965! He had a lot of time to civilise his attitude - just too arrogant to do it, and was never sufficiently brought to account by the Media now fawning over him.

Egghead68 · 10/04/2021 15:56

He killed a tiger too.

StoneofDestiny · 10/04/2021 15:57

bonfireheart, well no self respecting Scot would sing an essentially English anthem that promotes genocide of their own people.

God Grant that Marshal Wade,
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring,
May he sedition hush,

And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush,
God save the King.
Confound their politics
And curse their knavish tricks . . . etc.

(And yes, I know some do, but just proves there are total eejits in every nation)

jessstan2 · 10/04/2021 15:58

So did many people back in the day, even displaying tiger skin rugs complete with head and trophies on the wall!

Times changed and they stopped hunting except for food (and some for foxes of course, unfortunately that practice still continues).
