Thisisnotreallymyname · 09/04/2021 18:37

At a risk of being sent to the Tower, whilst I think it is sad that Prince Philip has died, am I alone in being amazed at the constant repetitive TV about his life.
It’s just going over snd over same old stuff. And I’d like to watch some normal TV !

IABU - YES
IANBU - NO

Please don't say 'The Scots' as if we have a hive mind @NeverBeenNormal

Yessss ‘deference’ is the word.

It is assumed that we all have deference. But l don’t.

Slipperfairy · 10/04/2021 12:55

he's probably done a lot more for this count than you have

Reckon if you're a public servant, you've probably also done a fair bit for your country over the years. Or some of those who tirelessly volunteer. But without the lifestyle and documentaries about your life.

Baws · 10/04/2021 12:59

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

Me too! It’s ridiculous! I am no fan of the royals and everything they stand for but I could understand this mass public grief a little bit if one of the younger ones had died unexpectedly but not a 99 year old who wasn’t the nicest of blokes anyway. The BBC are so far out of touch with the public on this. The whole concept of the monarchy is massively outdated as well. They have no relevance to the majority of people under 60 in the U.K. and this is especially the case outside of England.

I'm just waiting to be told what time/day the doorstep clapping will be.

Yeah that will be next 🙄 or a 2 minute silence. 😴

Exactly. The notion that some of us are inferior to others, merely by virtue of the womb that the allegedly superior being happened to exit from, is outdated, inappropriate, insulting and deeply pernicious.

Oblomov21 · 10/04/2021 13:08

It's overkill of reporting. I'm sick of it already.

Cactus1982 · 10/04/2021 13:09

You know things are extreme when my staunch royalist DM is complaining they’ve taken off Masterchef.

I’ve just watching the gun salutes. Absolutely no social distancing from the public who’ve turned up to watch, yet the police were all over the BLM and Sarah Everard protestors. Don’t worry, we all know our place... Hmm

derxa · 10/04/2021 13:12

I liked Prince Philip for many of the reasons a lot of you hate him. A complex and often infuriating man who would have succeeded in life outwith the Royal family.

BBC are finally acknowledging there is other news happening.

ICantBeDoingWithThis · 10/04/2021 13:30

@tara66

For information to anyone going on about DOE racism - He was a product of his time. There was a full episode of Fawlty Towers on Facebook yesterday - the ''Don't mention the War'' one - made in about 1981 - it was full of gratuitous extreme racism about Indians, Africans and Spanish - and to a lesser extent, Germans - the remarks were followed by canned laughter. Faulty Towers was on BBC. Not funny at all today. The worst ''joke'' was between Basil and the Major about Indians and Africans. Shocking prejudice about Spanish roo. Would not even see the light of day now .
Saying Phil was a product of his time is utter shite in my humble opinion. It doesn’t justify anything. He was a highly privileged man, very well educated, never had to worry about financial security and had everything he could possibly want done for him. This viewpoint is basically saying that someone like this can never learn and he can’t take on board criticism and learn every time he said something racist and offensive.

People in positions of power frequently get hounded out of their jobs for saying one racist comment (quite rightly) let alone a lifetime of them. But Phil was exempt from this and gets an airbrushed eulogy which is now on day two and will be going on until after his funeral.

I for one disliked him intensely and although I feel a human sadness for his family I don’t want to see wall to wall coverage of him for days on end. I would like to turn on the news channels and actually see news not just a love fest for this bloke. This is a man who would have probably said all this coverage was unnecessary claptrap anyway.

Oh dear God. No more doorstep clapping.
Onthedowns · 10/04/2021 13:31

Quite astounded by some of these comments, no one here knows 'what he was supposedly' like all opinions have come from media. There are much worse to be getting upset about than this. Yes he was old but like it or not he is part of our monarchy. Do they need modernising maybe but again we are fed by the media the same as every other event. They are part of history.

I expect the young men and women in our military see it as an honour to play their part. I tell my children as it is without the snippy comments they can make their own judgements when older.

There has been enough going on the past 12 months without everything being politicised or compared. You really think we live under communism? Its quite insulting to even compare.

Realistically do you think the parents of the little girl who is dying are bothered about the tv being taken up all day or the attention ? No i suspect because they are balanced people.

There are fsr more going on in people's lives don't like it don't watch it.

RedcurrantPuff · 10/04/2021 13:35

I’ve actually been pretty pro the Monarchy but all this shite over the last 24 hours could easily have me changing my mind.

RedcurrantPuff · 10/04/2021 13:38

I agree. And his comment to Annabel Goldie about matching knickers to a piece of tartan was appalling. Try saying that to someone in a place of work and see how long you remain in employment!

Berlinbabylon66 · 10/04/2021 13:41

Listening to Andrew Castle this morning, apparently he had a 'difficult' childhood Confused. Lived in France then moved to Surrey to be educated at a prep school then to a school in Germany owned by the Margrave of Baden, his brother in law. Seem to be reframing his early years as hard, certainly unstable but definitely not underpriviledged..

cyclingmad · 10/04/2021 13:42

Even worst is as a tax payers funding these people you don't get a choice. Id rather not have my hard earned money pay to keep a man in a privileged lifestyle with those horrible views .he doesn't represent me

I didn't mean it as a generic term but SOME Scottish people - particularly politicians - have been going on the Duke's connection with Scotland. There's a lot of people trying to grab some sort of connection.

I am an East Anglian and our regional news coverage inevitably involved some reporter camped out at Sandringham telling us all that nothing was happening. And there was another report from somewhere else where the Duke had once paid a visit. Relentless barrel scraping.

sashagabadon · 10/04/2021 13:44

Just on way back from Buckingham Palace. Loads of people there, huge queue to lay flowers, lovely mix of people.
Loads of camera crews setting up too.

ohforarainyday · 10/04/2021 13:48

I suspect you don't really care about anyone's grief. Not really. It's all just a keyboard game to you.

What a horrible, abusive thing to say - all simply because I am not a royalist and am advocating for equality!

My parents were killed two years ago, both still fairly young. I am still actively grieving their loss.

My best friend's father died in front of her, from cancer, a few years ago, and I supported her through it. One of my other close friends lost her dad to Covid only a month ago, and another friend lost a sister to suicide the week before Christmas.

Check yourself, keyboard warrior.

Why do people indulge in grief tourism?

Yes he was old but like it or not he is part of our monarchy. Do they need modernising maybe but again we are fed by the media the same as every other event. They are part of history.

History being my point, they have no place in today’s society and most of us object to having this ridiculous coverage forced upon us

Realistically do you think the parents of the little girl who is dying are bothered about the tv being taken up all day or the attention ? No i suspect because they are balanced people.
*The majority of people on here don’t agree with you so we aren’t balanced? 🤔 If it was my kid I would feel pretty insulted to be honest!
*
There are fsr more going on in people's lives don't like it don't watch it.
Which is the point of the post, we are being told what to watch due to the ridiculous and excessive coverage. Why should the major you not be able to watch a TV which we pay a license for just because a small minority want to dwell on the death of a 99 year old man ever didn’t know?

Are you joking? Tell me that you are.

People have been asked to stay away. To not lay flowers.
