Thisisnotreallymyname · 09/04/2021 18:37

At a risk of being sent to the Tower, whilst I think it is sad that Prince Philip has died, am I alone in being amazed at the constant repetitive TV about his life.
It’s just going over snd over same old stuff. And I’d like to watch some normal TV !

IABU - YES
IANBU - NO

It seems like the coverage is until lunchtime today and then eases off a bit.

Bluesheep8 · 10/04/2021 07:49

Maybe people have been working hard as nurses, or carers, and can't afford and dont have netflix etc, and don't want to read a book, and would like watch some TV??

....or listen to the radio? Oh no, wait - can't do that either....

checkedcloth · 10/04/2021 07:52

Even radio 6 has a ‘different’ schedule today which we will apparently ‘understand why’

No - I don’t actually

blowinahoolie · 10/04/2021 07:52

@MarinPrime

It's not compulsory to watch TV. Turn it off and read a book instead.
I only listen to radio as it fits into my lifestyle with raising small DC just now. Rarely watch TV. I was really pissed off yesterday when I kept switching station to get news about other issues in the world. Only to have a continuation of what I had just left on the previous station about DofE. It's not necessary to dominate all stations. Choice has been removed for licence fee payers.
FrankskinnerscRoc · 10/04/2021 07:54

It ain’t on Netflix, but be careful with YouTube & the radio who we’re playing much strange music yesterday 🥺

QueenofLouisiana · 10/04/2021 07:54

We happily discovered that we’d recorded Gardeners’ World last week, end hadn’t watched it! I thought that the ten o’clock news might have some other news, but no. Apparently nothing else at all happened yesterday.
I feel sorry that his family lost a loved one. I think the DofE scheme is a wonderful concept. But it’s just ridiculous.

supermoonrising · 10/04/2021 08:01

Anything to do with the royals and the media, the BBC especially, goes back to a 1930s mentality. Far as media goes, the BBC is better than some of the shite rags that adorn supermarket shelves, but it is far too craven to the establishment and the concept of "Great" Britain to maintain much impartiality in a huge amount of its news reporting. In fact studies have shown on many issues (take Israel/Palestine as one example) it is less 'impartial' than many of the paper rags which have a clear left/right bias.

Egghead68 · 10/04/2021 08:05

It’s like North Korea. Even the billboards have been changed to images of the deceased.

sashh · 10/04/2021 08:08

I was looking forward to glass wine and master chef, oh well at least got gogglebox to look forward to

I bet they won't show gogglebox of people going, "bloody hell where's masterchef?"

Wobblesandchickuns · 10/04/2021 08:08

@Coulddowithanap

Just because it's on TV doesn't mean you have to watch it. Put a movie on or read a book.
I'm sick of seeing this viewpoint. People know what their options are. It doesn't make it right.
Stovetopespresso · 10/04/2021 08:09

@Bluesheep8

Exactly. One step away from being in North Korea with all this coverage.

Wouldn't have been surprised if there'd been a knock on the door and it was someone checking what I was listening to.

I just hope my phone's not bugged, mum and I were laughing at the the archbishop of c"s awful toadying!
LovingBob · 10/04/2021 08:09

because that is when the sports coverage starts...
PuppyMonkey · 10/04/2021 08:20

Radio 2 has gone all “sad songs only” today.

I quite like it.Grin

MrsTophamHat · 10/04/2021 08:28

The media is getting very self indulgent about this now. You can see them all loving the fact that theyre involved in this pageant they've planned for years.

Oh good god no! That will be another day of Spotify for me then
Norwaydidnthappen · 10/04/2021 08:32

It’s a bit North Korean isn’t it. Just switch the tv off unless it’s Netflix or something on catch up.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 10/04/2021 08:35

The elderly people I care for, let alone across the country, would be most upset about the death of Prince Philip and would expect some respect , they would complain if there was anything but total coverage from the BBC

JustDanceAddict · 10/04/2021 08:35

We watched Netflix then gogglebox so avoided it. But yes, it was repetitive even the bits I saw at lunchtime and the early evening.
I think fine until 8ish, then normal service could’ve resumed (maybe not comedy).

ssd · 10/04/2021 08:35

We shouldn't have to turn the tv off, we pay a licence fee to watch it.

PuppyMonkey · 10/04/2021 08:39

@tigger1001 they just played Luther “Dance with my father” and I’m quite emotional now. Not a fan of royal people btw.

In fact, I think Radio 2 are doing the exact playlist from that thread on here a while ago about songs that make you cry.Hmm

StoneofDestiny · 10/04/2021 08:40

8 days of rioting in NI.
8 days of enforced mourning for Philip.

That's how relevant NI is to the UK media. If I was an innocent citizen or an injured police officer there I'd be livid.

DiddyDumDumDum · 10/04/2021 08:42

I get that, and I also get the amount of news coverage from yesterday. But it isn't just the BBC and the elderly don't trump everyone else.

On my news app today, the first 9 stories are about Prince Philip. But not...it's all the royal commentators rolling out their thoughts (and loving it). Then there are all the pictures of flowers. It could all go into one news article.

I'm not anti royals by the way and I do think it's important it is reported respectfully but a lot of articles are written just to fill some space. I can imagine the newspapers had a field day when they had something big to write about. It feels almost gleeful.

MrsTophamHat · 10/04/2021 08:44

Radio 1 is sounding OK. It's maybe a bit more chilled than usual but at least it's not funeral songs.

JustJustWhy · 10/04/2021 08:45

@Panpig

It's awful how much coverage that obnoxious man is getting. I felt really sad when it was announced that Paul Ritter had died aged only 54. However It is never a tragedy or a shock when a 99 year old dies. And it's bizarre how obsessed the BBC are with his death, considering their obvious stance on racism, sexism, rich white men and the class system etc.
I couldn't agree more.
Stellaris22 · 10/04/2021 08:49

Watch the coverage. It might change your mind.

No thanks, I prefer not to watch highly biased propaganda. I would be amazed if its a fair and accurate portrayal of him anyway. Are they discussing his many racist comments (or does the BBC still have their line of 'he knew how to lift the mood of a party'), and the time he told a grieving mother of two sons lost in a fire that 'smoke alarms are a damn nuisance'? I doubt it, so i'll stick to impartial viewing thanks.

Others might be happy to live in blissful ignorance and to be brainwashed with this BBC propaganda, but i'm good.
