Repetitive TV about Duke’s Death

At a risk of being sent to the Tower, whilst I think it is sad that Prince Philip has died, am I alone in being amazed at the constant repetitive TV about his life.
It’s just going over snd over same old stuff. And I’d like to watch some normal TV !

IABU - YES
IANBU - NO

Do the BBC have to do it as part of their royal charter maybe?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/04/2021 06:55

BBC News front page currently blanket coverage of Prince Philip's death. One item was about a loon who took his young children to the Palace to lay flowers at 1am. RF asked for no flowers, btw. Well below that there's a report of continuing violence in NI. Priorities all wrong. We can show respect and feel sympathy for the bereaved but this artificial show of mourning is not reflecting the mood of the nation, after a year when 150000 people died in a pandemic, many well before their time.

StoneofDestiny · 10/04/2021 07:00

Anglicans really aren't that big on the whole canonisation thing anyway. Far better chance of that if he'd hedged his bets with the catholics when he left the orthodox church

Nope - as the royals are freely able to discriminate like nobody else, he'd not have been permitted to marry Elizabeth if he'd been Catholic.

Regardless - he was no saint anyway in any religion.

LouLou198 · 10/04/2021 07:09

I was expecting coverage all evening on one channel, I seem to remember the same when Princess Margaret and the queen mum died, but bbc 1 and 2 at the same time I felt was a bit much.

RoseAndRose · 10/04/2021 07:15

That's changed already, there are plenty of other stories there now: Belfast, WHO, something Cameron's been up to , race report, Caribbean volcanic eruption, Ireland's changes to quarantine list, Putin critic strangled, death of a rapper, Floyd trial, coronivirus, Greta Thunberg, Lowry painting, sofagate, Myanmar and Vernon Kaye

And that's just the front headline page

StoneofDestiny · 10/04/2021 07:15

Just been on the bbc website to read the news - it's just as bad on there!

I'd be seriously angry if I lived in NI and saw how little interest there is in my streets being petrol bombed and police officers being attacked and injured. Maybe the loyalists in NI can see how much their flag waving 'loyalty' is really valued.

StoneofDestiny · 10/04/2021 07:20

RoseAndRose

We must be reading different front pages on the website!

The other 'stuff' you refer to is so far down the page - petrol bombing on UK soil comes after imbeciles laying flowers in the dark (despite being asked not to), Johnson's 'whitewashing' race report likewise.

RoseAndRose · 10/04/2021 07:22

I wonder if you get different variants of the website based on what you click on?

And yes, I do scroll down the screen, doesn't everyone? (Well, clearly not!)

But you'd miss so much every single day if you only look at what you see without scrolling

Even Radio 6 is playing sombre music

Yes it was. I couldn't believe it when I gave up on Radio 2 and put 6 on. Every single BBC radio channel was.
It actually made me quite angry. It just all felt very state controlled.

PuppyMonkey · 10/04/2021 07:26

I must admit to having a little titter when I turned on BBC4 to watch TOTP 1990 last night and there was a message basically telling me I wasn’t allowed to and I was to switch over to BBC1 or BBC2 to watch programmes about The DofE. Grin

PuppyMonkey · 10/04/2021 07:29

Oh yes the radio thing was weird. We ended up switching to Simon Mayo on Greatest Hits radio which was brilliant as he just played lots of good records and there were no adverts! Win!

stillcrazyafterall · 10/04/2021 07:29

I'm with you OP but this is what happens every time something significant happens, doesn't have to be a death either. Total overkill. Totally unnecessary.

satishoused · 10/04/2021 07:30

is one of the ultimate aims of the recent flag-worshiping drive. It's a blatant and naked attempt to 'other' anyone who won't prostrate themselves in front of, or venerate the union flag. *

What a load of rubbish. To the contrary we seem to be one of the few countries in the world where it's a given to hate the flag and to mock it. Unless you are Scottish or Welsh obviously, because then, nationalism is ok.

Yes it was very very weird, almost scary...wish I'd thought of the mighty Mayo.

Coulddowithanap · 10/04/2021 07:34

Just because it's on TV doesn't mean you have to watch it. Put a movie on or read a book.

blowinahoolie · 10/04/2021 07:36

Turned on BBC Breakfast this morning hoping to catch some news...nope. all about Duke of Edinburgh 😫 what else is needing to be said??!

Exactly. One step away from being in North Korea with all this coverage.
KoalaOok · 10/04/2021 07:40

I think because lots of people have been staying at home the TV has become more important. Do we think this level of coverage will continue for the week?

Bluesheep8 · 10/04/2021 07:41

Wouldn't have been surprised if there'd been a knock on the door and it was someone checking what I was listening to.

This!!

I listen to the radio during the day and thought it was total overkill that all bbc channels stopped their normal broadcasting to talk about the duke of Edinburgh. For hours and hours...

Then seeing all the programmes on the tv schedule. Total overkill and very state sponsorship like.

MarinPrime · 10/04/2021 07:45

It's not compulsory to watch TV. Turn it off and read a book instead.

I really hope not!!
Atalantea · 10/04/2021 07:46

@Suzi888

Cable, Netflix, Prime? Confused a book Wink
Maybe people have been working hard as nurses, or carers, and can't afford and dont have netflix etc, and don't want to read a book, and would like watch some TV??

OK let's see what's on BBC1, oh PP, BBC2? Same?????? BBC 4?? Off due to BBC 1 and 2....

Total utter shit show

LakieLady · 10/04/2021 07:47

@XDownwiththissortofthingX

Indeed

This part -

the extreme hostility and abuse that greets anyone who is 'non compliant' - it is sheer Orwell

is one of the ultimate aims of the recent flag-worshiping drive. It's a blatant and naked attempt to 'other' anyone who won't prostrate themselves in front of, or venerate the union flag. They'll be decried as "un-British" (an assertion which I'll gladly wear with pride), and declared fair game for ultra-nationalists to deal with as they see fit. See Trump and his 'with us or against us' bullshit, and his complete lack of interest in either admitting responsibility for, or the culpability of the idiots who went rampaging against 'liberals' in his name.

It's going to happen here, and it's ignorance that's enabling it.

Spot on.

It's a fine line between patriotism and blind loyalty, and the latter suits any government with malign intentions admirably.

I'm starting to fee distinctly uncomfortable with the way this country is going.
