Literally having one of those days. Talk talk is down in my area so I'm ploughing through mobile data. But literally EVERYTHING I'm trying to order is out of stock and it's driving me mad! I'm trying to find garden furniture, a bin store, a new rug, clothes for my daughter - it goes on and on!!

Just ranting!!!!!

We run a small business, and whilst we make a product in the UK, a fair percentage of our supplies come from Europe or India. These factories normally have several thousand workers on shift patterns allowing for 24/7 operation ........ the pandemic has meant that they are now running on skeleton staff to allow for social distancing, and are subject to local as well as national lockdowns. So products that are normally available in 2 to 3 weeks are now taking 3 to 4 months and that's being optimistic.

Not quite sure how you can blame that on Brexit but of course this is MN Hmm

@willstarttomorrow

Obviously the UK are such prolific manufacturers and producers that leaving brexit has no impact at all.
Did you miss the import/export figures as posted upthread?
Christmasfairy2020 · 09/04/2021 19:22

Currys for dishwasher. H and m have loads in stock?

WalkinginMemphis2 · 09/04/2021 19:23

@Hopeisnotastrategy shhhhh don’t tell everyone anoir JYSK Grin, there’s a lot of crap but always a gem whenever I’ve looked.

BIWI · 09/04/2021 19:24

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER

A lot of its more likely to be down to the Suez blockage than to Brexit. Though many do enjoy blaming everything on Brexit, I know.
Brexit
user1497207191 · 09/04/2021 19:24

One of my clients is a window-blind fitter. The two factories who supply him (both UK) with bespoke blinds have been on much lower productivity due to social distancing arising from covid. As a result he often has to wait 6-8 weeks for blinds whereas pre covid it was a couple of weeks. That's nothing to do with Brexit - that was the situation most of last year too!

willstarttomorrow · 09/04/2021 19:25

@17WalkinginMemphis2 I remember a radio phone in post Bexit in which a small business in Northern Ireland's cost had increased x4 because of the hard border. I think it was something like wool from England which they could not get there. Absoultley heart breaking.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 09/04/2021 19:25

LemonRoses and you don't think that global lockdown could have had some sort of impact on supply chains worldwide? That consumer behaviour completely changed in 2020/21?

Honestly, I'm not being argumentative, I'm trying to understand what the situation is. I understand the import charges but then I've always had to pay for stuff from the US and I don't tend to buy from EU that much. It will be interesting to see how we get to grips with it all.

If though some posters are just using the thread to blether on about Brexit doom and gloom then there's a whole board to ignore for that.

LeuvenMan · 09/04/2021 19:26

As a man, married to a "crazy cat lady" and proud owner of a 15 year old rescue cat, I feel your pain.
Whiskas Meat in Gravy out of stock, which is said cats favourite food.
This is an issue for all 3 of us, in different ways Sad

Not to mention the fact that everyone wants stuff for their garden this year. We just sold some outdoor furniture on Ebay and it flew out - but sure, Brexit Hmm

Don't be silly! It can only possibly be Brexit. Somehow, always, Brexit.

I think it’s being used to blame the devastating impact of Brexit. It’s clever but no, people haven’t stopped eating Marmite because of the pandemic.
CosmicComfort · 09/04/2021 19:31

The best thing I did was buy garden furniture in May last year, we had a lovely few months to sue the chair when not at work, was bliss😎
Its probably the only good decision I have made in the last 10 years, a shame my foresight isn’t always that sharp🤣

Frankfurters seem to be weirdly hard to get through ocado at the moment. Ocado has had supply issues with lots of items recently. I choose to blame Brexit.

Yarn supplies have dipped as well and prices are now going up for my favorite yarn. I have spent the last year stress buying or stocking up so I will survive.

Itsalonghaul · 09/04/2021 19:36

What I find harder to find than patio heaters or garden furniture, is works people of any kind to decorate, build anything - literally everyone here is booked solid for six months. So much for a possible recession, what recession?! I asked in February to have a small pond built, and he quoted me dates at the end of November at the earliest Confused

It is a bottle neck of demand now the lockdown is over. Everyone needs everything all at once.

thebillyotea · 09/04/2021 19:36

For all the Brexit deniers...

If I order something for mainland Europe, it is in stock.
Same thing for here: out of stock, or refused to deliver.

Pretty sure shipments don't shortcut via the Suez Canal to cross the Channel...

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 09/04/2021 19:37

LemonRoses Well I'm really hoping that the can-do sorts get a grasp of the situation and start pulling together to get the UK performing. Brexit is done, I didn't vote for it but I don't want to listen to endless told-you-so to those who did, we're past that now.

I think some aspects of Brexit are more devastating than others and more so to specific socio demographics than others. We have to start pulling together as a country now rather than continuing to wail about it because what will that achieve?

I remember when lockdown first happened that people were scaremongering about food shortages... and they pretty much caused them. The supply chains are very sophisticated and robust; we've seen reduced supply of some things and little impact to others. All in all, pretty damn good and I take my hat off to our supermarket chains for this because the navigation was deft.

Politicians lie. We know this. We should take whatever steps we can to protect what we want protecting, as far as we can.

Here to egg basket chairs (I had to look what these were) appearing on shelves near everybody who wants one, very soon.

What are you actually achieving with that though? A sarcastic told-you-so. Excellent.
Itsalonghaul · 09/04/2021 19:39

Yes we are waiting three months for a dishwasher

Of course you are. John Lewis you can literally have your pick now, and they come along and install it and take away your old one. If you want to choose shoddy ebay sellers or some second rate supplier, that is a matter for you but your post is incredibly misleading! Iflyaway

GabsAlot · 09/04/2021 19:40

Argos has been shit for ages only use them if im desparate

Itsalonghaul · 09/04/2021 19:42

Must be Brexit

Yes Grin of course thats it!!! Because of all of our local British tradespeople are stuck on ferries and in Europe sunning themselves, not!!!!! These people are working 247 flat out, and have even given up answering the phone.

Some kind of boom is taking place across every sector.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 09/04/2021 19:43

Not brexit, more covid, factories have had to shut down all over the world, but demand hasn’t lessened. Suez canal issues haven’t helped either.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 09/04/2021 19:43

It's because that ship got stuck mostly

Defaultname · 09/04/2021 19:45

Say what you like about the European trade bloc, at least they got the patio furniture delivered on time (and kept the gardeners cheap).

Itsalonghaul · 09/04/2021 19:48

Who knew we would have rerun of hysteria at the end of the lockdown! Last year it was all about bog roll and pasta, this year it is all about cat food and garden furniture. Mass hysteria about Marmite of all things.

Most production sites are having to work with 50% capacity due to social distancing, some have had to close altogether for weeks on end due to covid outbreaks hedgeowl Why am I having to explain this to you, given the average you need to be to register on here, how come this hasn't occurred to you?

Or do you expect people to work in unsafe conditions and risk their lives just so that you can have your padded recliner to rest your buttocks on this summer?
